  • Very frequently the compressible flow in an extinction nozzle of gas circuit breaker is simulated under no arc assumption, which can be reasonable for both high and low current breakings. In the present study, computations are performed to investigate the major features of the compressible flows inside the arc extinction nozzle of gas circuit breaker. A fully implicit finite volume scheme is applied to solve the two-dimensional, steady, compressible, Wavier-Stokes equations. The computed results are validated with the previous experimental data available. Several types of turbulence models are explored to reasonably predict the complicated flows inside the arc extinction nozzle. The obtained results show that the shock wave boundary layer interaction inside the nozzle significantly influences the whole performance of the gas breaker.

  • Two-phase compressible flow fields of air-water are investigated numerically in the fixed Eulerian grid framework. The phase interface is captured via volume fractions of each phase. A way to model two phase compressible flows as a single phase one is found based on an equivalent equation of states of Tait's type for a multiphase cell. The equivalent single phase field is discretized using the Roe‘s approximate Riemann solver. Two approaches are tried to suppress the pressure oscillation phenomena at the phase interface, a passive advection of volume fraction and a direct pressure relaxation with the compressible form of volume fraction equation. The direct pressure equalizing method suppresses pressure oscillation successfully and generates sharp discontinuities, transmitting and reflecting acoustic waves naturally at the phase interface. In discretizing the compressible form of volume fraction equation, phase interfaces are geometrically reconstructed to minimize the numerical diffusion of volume fraction and relevant variables. The motion of a projectile in a water-filled tube which is fired by the release of highly pressurized air is simulated presuming the flow field as a two dimensional one, and several design factors affecting the projectile movement are investigated.

  • In this paper, we present a strategy to extend solution capability of an existing low Mach number preconditioned compressible solver to incompressible flows with a little modification. To this end, the energy equation that is of the same form of the total energy equation of compressible flows is used. The energy equation is obtained by a linear combination of the thermal energy equation, the continuity equation and the mechanical energy equation. Subsequently, a modified artificial compressibility method in conjunction with a time marching technique is applied to these incompressible governing equations for steady flow solutions. It is found that the Roe average of the common governing equations is equally valid for both the compressible and incompressible flow conditions. The extension of an existing compressible solver to incompressible flows does not affect the original compressible flow analysis. Validity for incompressible flow analysis of the extended solver is examined for various inviscid, laminar and turbulent flows.

  • The present paper deals with the efficient computation of higher-order CFD methods for compressible flow using graphics processing units (GPU). The higher-order CFD methods, such as discontinuous Galerkin (DG) methods and correction procedure via reconstruction (CPR) methods, can realize arbitrary higher-order accuracy with compact stencil on unstructured mesh. However, they require much more computational costs compared to the widely used finite volume methods (FVM). Graphics processing unit, consisting of hundreds or thousands small cores, is apt to massive parallel computations of compressible flow based on the higher-order CFD methods and can reduce computational time greatly. Higher-order multi-dimensional limiting process (MLP) is applied for the robust control of numerical oscillations around shock discontinuity and implemented efficiently on GPU. The program is written and optimized in CUDA library offered from NVIDIA. The whole algorithms are implemented to guarantee accurate and efficient computations for parallel programming on shared-memory model of GPU. The extensive numerical experiments validates that the GPU successfully accelerates computing compressible flow using higher-order method.

  • In this paper, the shock waves in compressible solids and liquids are simulated using a six-equation diffuse interface multiphase flow model that is extended to the Cochran and Chan equation of state. A pressure relaxation method based on a volume fraction function and a pressure-correction equation are newly implemented to the six-equation model. The developed code has been validated by a shock tube problem with liquid nitromethane and an impact problem of a copper plate on a solid explosive. In addition, a new problem, an impact of a copper plate on liquid nitromethane, has been solved. The present code well shows the wave structures in compressible solids and liquids without any numerical oscillations and overshoots. After the impact of a solid copper plate on liquid, two shock waves (one propagates into liquid and the other into solid) are generated and a material interface moves to the impacting direction. The computational results show that the shock velocity inside the liquid linearly increases with the impact velocity.

  • We formulate and study a finite element method for a linearized steady state, compressible, viscous Navier-Stokes equations in 2D, based on the discontinuous Galerkin method. Dislike the standard discontinuous galerkin method, we do not assume that the triangle sides be bounded away from the characteristic direction. the unique stability follows from the inf-sup condition established on the finite dimensional spaces for the (incompressible) Stokes problem. An error analysis having a jump discontinuity for pressure is shown.

  • The handicap for investigating the aero-optical effect focuses on the accurate prediction on the index refraction fluctuation or density fluctuation. In recent years, with the development of CFD techniques and optical experimental techniques, the comprehension have developed on the aero-optical transmitting effect in many kinds of complex flow. This study mainly introduces the optical aberration in compressible mixing layer. And then the debates about the mechanism of aero-optical effects and assessment of image blur also present.

  • This paper deals with rescheduling on unrelated parallel-machines with compressible processing times, assuming that the arrival of a set of new jobs triggers rescheduling. It formulates this rescheduling problem as an assignment problem with a side constraint and proposes a heuristic to solve it. Computational tests evaluate the efficacy of the heuristic.

  • In this paper, we consider the existence of time periodic solutions for the compressible magneto-micropolar fluids in the whole space ℝ3. In particular, we first solve the problem in a sequence of bounded domains by the topological degree theory. Then we obtain the existence of time periodic solutions in ℝ3 by a limiting process.
