Fabrication and Evaluation of Powders Containing Calcium Silicate for Solid Self-emulsifying System of Oil (오일 성분의 고형 자가 유화 시스템을 위한 규산칼슘 함유 분말의 제조 및 평가)

  • The objective of this study is to assess the impact of spray drying conditions on medium-chain triglyceride (MCT) loading, solubility, and release of an MCT-loaded solid self-emulsifying system in a water-insoluble oily substance. MCT-loaded solid self-emulsifying systems are prepared by spray drying with SDS and calcium silicate. The effects of inlet temperature (60, 80, or 100℃) and feed solution composition (0, 10, 50, 90, or 100% ethanol) on physicochemical properties of MCT-loaded solid self-emulsifying systems are studied. The inlet temperature significantly affects the water solubility of MCT. Moreover, the feed solution composition significantly affects water solubility, release rate, and MCT loading. The MCT-loaded solid self-emulsifying system obtained at 60℃ using 90% ethanol feed solution shows the best physicochemical properties among the synthesized products and exhibits better water solubility (4.43 ± 0.44 vs. 0 ㎍/mL) and release (94.4 ± 1.6 vs. 32.8 ± 7.4%, 60 min) than a commercial product. Furthermore, the MCT-loaded solid self-emulsifying system shows an excellent emulsion droplet size (approximately 230 nm).

Simulation of Rare Earth Elements Removal Behavior in TRU Product Using HSC Chemistry Code (HSC Chemistry 코드를 이용한 TRU 생성물 중의 희토류 원소 제거 거동 모사)

  • The feasibility of rare earth (RE) removal process via oxidation reactions with UCl3 was investigated using the HSC Chemistry code to reduce the concentrations of RE in transuranic (TRU) products. The composition and thermodynamic data of TRU and RE elements contained in the reference spent fuel were examined. The reactivity was evaluated by calculating equilibrium data considering oxidation reactions with UCl3. Both RE removal rate and TRU recovery rate were evaluated for the two cases, wherein TRU products with different RE concentrations were used. When TRU products were reacted with UCl3, selective oxidation was driven by the difference in the Gibbs free energy of each element. The calculation results imply that the TRU/RE ratio of the final product can be increased by removing RE elements while maintaining the maximum recovery rate of TRU, which is accomplished by controlling the amount of UCl3 injected. Since the results of this study are based on thermodynamic equilibrium data, there are many limitations to apply to the actual process. However, it is expected to be used as an important data for the process design to supply the TRU product of pyroprocessing to SFR's fuel demanding low RE concentrations.

  • An acid polysaccharide (SFP), was extracted from alga Sargassum fusiforme in hot water, was purified by ion exchange chromatography on DEAE-cellulose. The PC, chemical analysis, electrophoresis and IR of SFP indicated that it was a kind of alginate with a mol. wt. of 13,000 and a molar ratio of mannuronic acid to guluronic acid 2.75. Pharmacological tests showed that SFP could prolong the survival duration of mice suffering from ascitic Sarcoma 180 with a rate of life prolongation of 63.44%.

  • The balance of microbial populations in the gastrointestinal (GI) tract of all warm-blooded animals is critical to the maintenance of health and resistance to disease. The composition of the populations can be altered by diet and environment, making the host animal susceptible to disease, and reducing growth rate and feed efficiency. Some feed additives including antimicrobial agents, prohiotics or yucca extract have been used to promote growth and feed utilization. There is evidence that part of growth-promoting effect of those feed additives results from the suppression of microbial urease activity or ammonia production in the GI contents of animals. Over 200 microbial species have been known to produce urease and the product of urea hydrolysis, ammonia, is toxic to animals. Carefully tested probiotics or other urease-suppressing agents can be a possible alternative to antimicrobial agents including antibiotics as growth promotants used for animals feeds.

  • This study deals with characterizations of microstructure and wear performance of a cladding layer, product on 1.9 mm-thick mild steel plate by the electric resistance welding, of composite metal powder of Coarse WC-6.5%Co and high carbon alloy(SHA). The cladding layer was examined and tested fur microstructural features, chemical composition, hardness, wear performance and wear mechanism. The cladding layer have two different matrix were observed by an optical microscope and EPMA. The one was the coarse WC-6.5Co structure. The other was the melted SHA with surrounding the WC-6.5Co structure. The hardness of WC-6.5Co was 1210HV. The hardness of SHA was 640HV. In comparison by wear rate, the cladding layer showed the remarkable wear performance that was 15 times of SM490 and about 62% of D2.

  • The objective of this study is to determine the effect of fiber direction arrangement and layer composition of hybrid bamboo laminate boards on the physical and mechanical properties. The raw material used was tali bamboo (Gigantochloa apus (J.A. & J.H. Schultes) Kurs) rope in the form of flat sheets (zephyr) and falcata veneer (Paraserianthes falcataria (L) Nielsen). Zephyr bamboo was arranged in three layers using water-based isocyanate polymer (WBPI) with a glue spread rate of 300 g/m2. There were variations in the substitution of the core layer with falcata veneers (hybrid) as much as two layers and using a glue spread rate of 170 g/m2. The laminated bamboo board was cold-pressed at a pressure of 22.2 kgf/cm2 for 1 h, and the physical and mechanical properties were evaluated. The results showed that the arrangement of the fiber direction significantly affected the dimensional stability, modulus of rupture, modulus of elasticity, shear strength, and screw withdrawal strength. However, the composition of the layers had no significant effect on the physical and mechanical properties. The bonding quality of bamboo laminate boards with WBPI was considered to be quite good, as shown by the absence of delamination in all test samples. The bamboo hybrid laminate board can be an alternative based on the physical and mechanical properties that can meet laminated board standards.

Cloning, Expression, and Renaturation Studies of Reteplase

  • Recombinant human tissue plasminogen activator deletion mutein (Reteplase) is a clinically promising thrombolytic drug. Reteplase cDNA was subcloned into a bacteria expression system, and the resultant recombinant was biologically characterized. The Reteplase was expressed in Escherichia coli as an inclusion body, and the downstream processes of the Reteplase inclusion body included denaturation, renaturation, and purification. A protein disulfide isomerase (PDI) was used to assist the refolding of Reteplase, and it was found to increase the refolding rate from less than 2% to more than 20%. The refolded Reteplase was purified through two chromatography steps, including lysine-coupled agarose affinity chromatography and then CM-sepharose cation-exchange chomatography. The purity of r-PA was analyzed by Western bolt analysis, and N-terminal amino acid and amino acid composition analyses confirmed the end-product. Reteplase showed higher thrombolytic potency in an animal thrombus model.

Bilin and Bilinone Chlorophyll Catabolite Content in the Hamamelidaceae Autumnal Leaves

  • In order to facilitate the quantification in autumnal Hamamelidaceae leaves, a HPLC method was used for the determination of two chlorophyll catabolites and their isomers: bilin-type (1) and bilinone-type (2) ones. The separation was done on a RP-C4 column with a gradient solvent system of 0.1% trifluoroacetic acid aqueous-methanol at the flow-rate of 0.2 mL/min and detected at 244 nm. The quantity of bilin-type (1) and bilinone-type (2) chlorophyll catabolite isomers from ten species of Hamamelidaceae autumnal leaves methanol extracts: Corylopsis pauciflora, Corylopsis spicata, Forthergilla major, Hamamelis intermedia, Hamamelis japonicum, Hamamelis japonicum var. flavopurpurscens, Hamamelis virginiana, Parrotiopsis jacquemontiana, Parrotia persica and X Sycoparrotia semidecidua were from 0.85 mg/g ~ 57.50 mg/g for bilin-type isomers (1) and 3.40 mg/g ~ 49.30 mg/g for bilinone-type isomers (2). The results obtained gave insight in quantitative bilintype (1) and bilinone-type (2) chlorophyll catabolite composition of the Hamamelidaceae plant species autumnal leaves.

Production of Inulo-oligosaccharides from Inulin by a Purified Endoinulinase from Aspergillus ficcum (ASpergillus ficuum 기원의 정제 endoinulinase를 이용한 이눌린으로부터 이눌로올리고당의 생산)

  • Production of inulo-oligosaccharides from inulin was carried out with the maximum yield of 94% using a purified endoinulinase from Aspergillus ficcum. The optimum reaction temperature and pH were 55-60$^{\circ}C$ and pH 5.5-6.0, respectively. The Michaelis constant and maximum reaction velocity of the endoinuinase for inulin were 13.27 g/L and 0.13 g/L$.$min at 55$^{\circ}C$, pH 5.5, respectively. Inulin source had no significant effect on oligosaccharide yield and product composition, although initial production rate differed according to inulin origins. The reaction pH was a critical factor in inulo-oligosaccharide production because considerable free monosaccharides were released, decreasing oligosaccharide yield at low pH conditions. An empirical relationship describing the reaction performance was developed from kinetic data: the time to reach maximum oligosaccharide yield (tw) as a function of initial concentration of inulin (lo) and enzyme (Eo); i.e., log tM = -1.025 log Eo - 0.011 l0 + 2.655.

  • This paper presents development of a user-friendly automatic control system for ESR(Electro-Slag Remelting or Refining) process. It is a second-phase refining one, commonly applied to production of high-purity specialty steel. A primarily refined castingot acts as a consumable electrode and melts by the electric resistance heat generated when high current is induced through a slag bath.
