  • In this study, designs of the high efficiency composite propeller blade for a high speed turboprop aircraft, which will be used for a next generation regional commercial aircraft in Korea, are performed. Both the vortex theory and the blade element theory are used for preliminary aerodynamic design and performance analysis of the propeller. Then the aerodynamic design result is confirmed through performance analysis using a commercial CFD code, ANSYS. The carbon/epoxy composite materials is used, and the skin-spar-foam sandwich type structure is adopted for improvement of lightness and structural stability. Finally, it is investigated that the proposed propeller blade has high efficiency and structural safety through both aerodynamic and structural analysis and experimental test of a prototype propeller blade.

  • A cyclocopter propelled by the cycloidal blade system, which can be described as a horizontal rotary wing, is a new concept of VTOL vehicle. In this paper, optimized structure design is carried out for the aerodynamically optimized cyclocopter rotor system. Database is obtained fer design variables such as stacking sequence (ply angles), number of plies and spar locations through MSC/NASTRAN and optimum values are determined by RSM and some other optimizing processes. For the rotor system including optimized blade and composite hub m, the maximum stress by static analysis is within the failure criteria. And the rotor system is designed for the purpose of avoiding possible dynamic instabilities by inconsistency between frequencies of rotor rotation and some low natural frequencies of rotor.

  • A GFRP based composite blade was developed for a 750kW wind energy conversion system of type class I. The blade sectional geometry was designed to have a general shell-spar structure. The load cases specified in the IEC61400-1 international specification were considered. For withstanding all relevant extreme loads, the structural analysis for the complete blade was performed using a commercial FEM code. The static load carrying capacity, buckling stability, blade tip deflection and natural frequencies at various rotational speeds were evaluated to satisfy the strength requirements in accordance with the IEC61400-1 and GL Regulations. For designing a lightweight blade, the thickness and the lay-up pattern of the skin-foam sandwich structures were optimized iteratively using the DOT program T-bolts were used for joining the blade root and the hub, which were modeled using a 3D FE volume model. In order to confirm the safety of the root connection, the static stresses of the thick root laminate and the steel. bolts were predicted by taking account of the bolt pretension and the root bending moments. The calculated stresses were compared with the material strengths.

  • In this paper, a deep neural network(DNN) model for predicting the vibration characteristics of the composite rotor blade with c-spar cross section was developed. Herein, the present DNN model is defined by using the natural frequencies obtained through the in-house code based on the nonlinear co-rotational(CR) shell element. For the present DNN model, the accuracy of the model was evaluated via the data with a random distribution of thickness and a tendency to decrease in thickness along the blade span.

  • The process of designing and building a human-powered aircraft (HPA) and its performance analysis are introduced in this paper. Light Bros, the Chungnam National University HPA team, has developed Volante, a HPA, to compete in the 2012 exhibition of human-powered aircraft hosted by Korea Aerospace Research Institute. The power train system is composed of a two-blade propeller and Bevel-type gear and the ground test bed is built to simulate the operation. A study has been made to find a efficient propeller based upon the test result of thrust and power available from a pilot under various propeller conditions and running time. The load and structural analysis is conducted for the glider-shaped wing made of composite material which has very high aspect ratio. The spar is analyzed using finite element modeling followed by the comparison of its displacement and strain on structural test. As a result, the performance and safety is confirmed.

  • In order to increase endurance flight efficiency of long endurance electric powered UAV with solar cell, the light weight airframe design techniques are important. In this paper, the design of the main wing of electric powered UAV manufactured using Mylar film and fiber reinforced composite was conducted in order to achieve weight reduction and structural integrity of the structure. The shape of spar and size were determined using beam theory analysis. The finite element analysis of the wing was performed under various load condition derived from flight environment of EAV-2H. Finally, the static strength test of the main wing was conducted to verify structural integrity. It was found that the developed main wing weigh less than 42% than the previous EAV-2 and the main wing passed static strength test under ultimate load.

  • In this study, the 750㎾ scale composite blade for the horizontal axis wind turbine system was designed and manufactured, and it was tested and evaluated by the specific structural test rig. In the test, it was found that local bucklings at the trailing edge of the blade and excessive deflections at the blade tip were happened. In order to solve these problems, the design of blade structure was modified. after improving the design, the abrupt change of deflection at the blade tip was reduced by smooth variation of the spar thickness and the local buckling was removed by extending the web length. The modified design was analyzed by the FEM, the safety and stability of th blade structure.
