  • A series of test on concrete-filled composite columns was preformed to evaluate structural performance under axial compression and cyclic lateral loading. It was presented that concrete-filled composite columns had high strength, high stiffness and large energy-absorption capacity on account of mutual confinement between the steel plate and filled-in concrete. A cross section analysis procedure developed to predict the moment-curvature relation of composite columns was proven to be on accurate and effective method. The ductility factor and the response modification factor were evaluated for the seismic design of concrete-filled composite columns. It was shown that concrete-filled composite columns could be used as a very efficient earthquake-resistant structural member.

  • Semi-rigid connections with blind bolts could solve the difficulty that traditional high strength bolts were unavailable to splice a steel/composite beam to a closed section column. However, insufficient investigations have focused on the performance of semi-rigid connection to square concrete filled double-skin steel tubular (CFDST) columns. In this paper, a component model was developed to evaluate the mechanical behavior of semi-rigid composite connections to CFDST columns considering the stiffness and strength of column face in compression and column web in shear which were determined by the load transfer mechanism and superstition method. Then, experimental investigations on blind bolted composite joints to square CFDST columns were conducted to validate the accuracy of the component model. Dominant failure modes of the connections were analyzed and this type of joint behaved semi-rigid manner. More importantly, strain responses of CFDST column web and tubes verified that stiffness and strength of column face in compression and column web in shear significantly affected the connection mechanical behavior owing to the hollow part of the cross-section for CFDST column. The experimental and analytical results showed that the CFDST column to steel-concrete composite beam semi-rigid joints could be employed for the assembled structures in high intensity seismic regions.

  • In this study, connection of steel reinforced concrete(SRC) column and composite beam which consists of H-section and U-section members were tested under cyclic loading. An essential point of the composite beam is the structural performance of welded joint between the H-section and the U-section members. To improve the structural performance of joint of two beam members, vertical stiffeners, trapezoidal stiffeners, and top bars were used. Five full-scaled specimens were designed to study the effect of a number of parameters on cyclic performance of connections such as H-section beam size($H-500{\times}200{\times}10{\times}16$, $H-600{\times}200{\times}11{\times}17$), the presence of stiffeners and top bars, and the presence of no weld access hole(WAH) method. Based on the test results, deformation capacity of the specimens with H-500 series beam and H-600 series beam were 4% and 3% rotation angle, which is the requirement for the Special Moment Frame and Intermediate Moment Frame(IMF), respectively. Test result showed that deformation capacity of connection with stiffeners and top bars is greater than that of connection without stiffeners and top bars. Finally, energy dissipation capacity and strain profile of specimens were summarized.

  • In the first-order shear deformation laminated beam theory (FSDT), the Kirchhoff hypothesis is relaxed such that the transverse normals do not remain perpendicular to the midsurface after deformation. Bending behavior of laminated composite thin-walled beams with singly- and doubly-symmetric open sections under uniformly distributed and concentrated loads is analyzed by the Timoshenko-type thin-walled beam theory. A closed-form expression for the shear correction factor of I-shaped composite laminated section is obtained. Numerical examples are presented to compare present analytical solutions by FSDT with the finite element solutions obtained by using three dimensional model. The effects of lamination of scheme and length-to-height ratio on the shear deformation of laminated composite beams with various boundary conditions are studied.

  • This study suggested a section of a new module that will allow for applying a large section in order to solve the technical difficulties mentioned above and to secure low stiffness of FRP, developed a new FRP + concrete composite girder that is filled with the appropriate amount of concrete. To identify the structural behavior of this FRP + concrete composite girder, experiments were conducted to measure its shear strength according to the difference in the strength of confined concrete and variation of the shear span to depth. The results of the shear strength test confirmed the composite effect from confining concrete and the effect of increase in strength proportional to the strength of concrete.

  • For the optimal design of composite breakwaters, a computer program PROCOBRA is developed using the combined ALM-BFGS algorithm. A model formulation for the section design optimization problem of composite breakwaters is proposed where a concept of subsectional weighting factors is introduced in the objective function. Usability of the program is verified through a numerical example. From the study, it is found that the ALM-BFGS method is reliable and can be effectively applied for the design optimization of coastal structures. Compared with conventional design process, it is proved that the economical design of composite breakwaters is possible.

  • This paper presents a flexural-torsional analysis of thin-walled open-section composite beams. A general geometrically nonlinear model for thin-walled composite beams and general laminate stacking sequences is given by using systematic variational formulation based on the classical lamination theory. The nonlinear algebraic equations of present theory are linearized and solved by means of an incremental Newton-Raphson method. Based on the analytical model, a displacement-based one-dimensional finite element model is developed to formulate the problem. Numerical results are obtained for thin-walled composite beams under general loadings, addressing the effects of fiber angle, laminate stacking sequence and loading parameters.

  • Intentionally weakened girders near the beam-to-colum connection lead ductile failures at the weakened points prior to potential brittle failure at the connection points subjected to strong earthquake. Recent research investigated cyclic behavior of composite beams with a rectangular web opening and find out ductile failure of such beams due to plastic hinge formation of T-section at the four corners of the rectangular opening. But eventual failures of T-sections are resulted from local buckling of T-section having a narrow stem and a narrow bound of plastic hinge formation. This continuing research proposes double-circular opening instead of rectangular one in ofter to improve energy dissipation capacity as well as composite beam strength, Experimental test of two specimens was carried out and its results are compared with those of nonlinear finite element analyses

  • Recent days composite bridge deck is gaining attraction due to many advantages such as light weight, high strength, corrosion resistance, and high durability. In this study, composite sandwich deck models of hat, box, and triangular section type were fabricated by VARTM process. For those models, three point flexural test was carried out both in strong and weak axis. The experimental results are compared with each other to determine efficient section type. Also finite element analysis was performed and compared with experiments to verify analysis model. It has been demonstrated that composite sandwich deck can be used as bridge deck in the new construction and rehabilitation work.
