  • A finite strip formulation was developed for buckling and free vibration analysis of laminated composite plates based on different shear deformation plate theories. The different shear deformation theories such as Zigzag higher order, Refined Plate Theory (RPT) and other higher order plate theories by variation of transverse shear strains through plate thickness in the parabolic form, sine and exponential were adopted here. The two loaded opposite edges of the plate were assumed to be simply supported and remaining edges were assumed to have arbitrary boundary conditions. The polynomial shape functions are applied to assess the in-plane and out-of-plane deflection and rotation of the normal cross-section of plates in the transverse direction. The finite strip procedure based on the virtual work principle was applied to derive the stiffness, geometric and mass matrices. Numerical results were obtained based on various shear deformation plate theories to verify the proposed formulation. The effects of length to thickness ratios, modulus ratios, boundary conditions, the number of layers and fiber orientation of cross-ply and angle-ply laminates were determined. The additional results on the same effects in the interaction of biaxial in-plane loadings on the critical buckling load were determined as well.

  • In order to predict the dynamic behavior of composite laminated plate accurately, the parametric identification is performed using its mechanical properties- $E_1,\;E_2,\;V_{12},\;G_{12}$ as design parameters. After natural frequencies are measured through simple vibration test, the objective function consists of the sum of errors between experimental and numerical frequencies of a structure. As optimization algorithm, conjugate gradient method is used to minimize the objective function. Sensitivity Analysis is performed to update design parameters during this process and can explain the result of parametric identification. In order to check the propriety of result, mode shapes are compared before and after identification. The improved prediction of natural frequencies of composite laminated plate is obtained with updated properties. For the application of result, updated properties is applied to the composite laminated plate that has different stacking sequence.

  • This paper studies the static and dynamic characteristics of composite plates subjected to an arbitrary periodic load in hygrothermal environments. The material properties of composite plates are depended on the temperature and moisture. The governing equations of motion of Mathieu-type are established by using the Galerkin method with reduced eigenfunction transforms. A periodic load is taken to be a combination of axial pulsating load and bending stress in the example problem. The regions of dynamic instability of laminated composite plates are determined by solving the eigenvalue problems based on Bolotin's method. The effects of temperature rise and moisture concentration on the dynamic instability of laminated composite plates are investigated and discussed. The influences of various parameters on the instability region and dynamic instability index are also investigated. The numerical results reveal that the influences of hygrothermal effect on the dynamic instability of laminated plates are significant.

  • This paper presents the shear buckling analysis of symmetrically laminated cross-ply plates resting on Pasternak foundation under pure in-plane uniform shear load. The classical laminated plate theory is used for the shear buckling analysis of laminated plates. The Rayleigh-Ritz method with novel plate shape functions is proposed to solve the differential equations and a computer programming is developed to obtain the shear buckling loads. Finally, the effects of the plate aspect ratios, boundary conditions, rotational restraint stiffness, translational restraint stiffness, thickness ratios, modulus ratios and foundation parameters on the shear buckling of the laminated plates are investigated.

  • This proposed project presents the bi-axial and uni-axial stability behavior of laminated composite plates based on an original three variable "refined" plate theory. The important "novelty" of this theory is that besides the inclusion of a cubic distribution of transverse shear deformations across the thickness of the structure, it treats only three variables such as conventional plate theory (CPT) instead five as in the well-known theory of "first shear deformation" (FSDT) and theory of "higher order shear deformation" (HSDT). A "shear correction coefficient" is therefore not employed in the current formulation. The computed results are compared with those of the CPT, FSDT and exact 3D elasticity theory. Good agreement is demonstrated and proved for the present results with those of "HSDT" and elasticity theory.

  • In this study, nonlinear response of laminated functionally graded carbon nanotube reinforced composite (FG-CNTRC) plate under low-velocity impact based on the Eshelby-Mori-Tanaka approach in thermal conditions is studied. The governing equations are derived based on higher-order shear deformation plate theory (HSDT) under von $K\acute{a}rm\acute{a}n$ geometrical nonlinearity assumptions. The finite element method with 15 DOF at each node and Newmark's numerical integration method is applied to solve the governing equations. Four types of distributions of the uniaxially aligned reinforcement material through the thickness of the plates are considered. Material properties of the CNT and matrix are assumed to be temperature dependent. Contact force between the impactor and the laminated plate is obtained with the aid of the modified nonlinear Hertzian contact law models. In the numerical example, the effect of layup (stacking sequence) and lamination angle as well as the effect of temperature variations, distribution of CNTs, volume fraction of the CNTs, the mass and the velocity of the impactor in a constant energy level and boundary conditions on the impact response of the CNTRC laminated plates are investigated in details.

  • In this paper, the hybrid response surface method(HRSM) is proposed and examined. Hybrid response surface method calculate a approximate model repeatedly based on MPP coordinates. To verify the performance, probability of failure, MPP(Most Probable failure Point) and reliability index are calculated for nonlinear function and composite laminated plate by using reliability analysis method and compared with results by using typical response surface method(RSM). Probability of failure is calculated under the assumption of the nonlinear limit state equation and given failure criterion. The results of proposed method shows performance improvement in estimating the probability of failure.

  • In this paper the analysis of laminate composite folded plates with arbitrary angle connection like box girder is studied by finite strip method Total stiffness of laminated plate is obtained by integration of the stiffness in each layer or lamina through laminate thickness and total stiffness in each layer or lamina through laminate thickness and total tiffness matrix is obtained by substitutionto equilibrium equation derived from the minimum total potential energy theorem. The assumed displacement functions for a finite strip method in plate or box girder analysis are combinations of one-way polynomial functions in the transverse direction and harmonic functions in the span-wise direction. Finite strip method with the merits of the simplification in modeling and the reduction of analytical time is accurate in the analysis of laminate composite folded plates shaped like box firders.

  • In this research, buckling analysis of an embedded laminated composite plate is investigated. The elastic medium is simulated with spring constant of Winkler medium and shear layer. With considering higher order shear deformation theory (Reddy), the total potential energy of structure is calculated. Using Principle of Virtual Work, the constitutive equations are obtained. The analytical solution is performed in order to obtain the buckling loads. A detailed parametric study is conducted to elucidate the influences of the layer numbers, orientation angle of layers, geometrical parameters, elastic medium and type of load on the buckling load of the system. Results depict that the highest buckling load is related to the structure with angle-ply orientation type and with increasing the angle up to 45 degrees, the buckling load increases.

  • This paper demonstrates the analyses of the interlaminar shear stress of laminated composite plates subjected to transversely impact. For this purpose, a plate finite element model based on the higher order shear deformation plate theory in conjunction with static contact laws is developed. Test materials were CFRP with cross-ply laminate $[O_4/{\theta}_4]_S$, $[90_4/{\theta}_4]_S$ stacking sequences and angle-ply laminate $[{\theta}_4/-{\theta}_4]_S$, $[{\theta}_4/-{\theta}_4]_S$ stacking deguences with $2^t{\times}40^w{\times}100^l(mm)$ dimension. As a result, stacking seguence and fiber orientation were found to have a significant effect on the interlaminar stresses in composite laminates.
