  • Autoclave curing using the vacuum bagging method is widely used for the manufacture of advanced composite prepreg airframe structures. Due to increasing use of advanced composites, specific techniques have been developed to repair damaged composite structures. In order to repair the damaged part, it is required that the damaged areas be removed, such as skin and/or honeycomb core, by utilizing the proper method and then repairing the area by laying up prepreg (and core) then curing under vacuum using the vacuum bagging materials. It shall be cured either in an oven or autoclave per the original specification requirements. Delamination can be observed in the sound areas during and/or after a couple times exposure to the elevated curing temperature due to the repeated repair condition. This study was conducted for checking the degree of degradation of properties of the cured parts and delamination between skin prepreg and honeycomb core. Specimens with glass honeycomb sandwich construction and glass/epoxy prepreg were prepared. The specimens were cured 1 to 5 times at $260^{circ}F$ in an autoclave and each additionally exposed 50, 100 and 150 hours in the $260^{circ}F$ oven. Each specimen was tested for tensile strength, compressive strength, flatwise tensile strength and interlaminar shear strength. To monitor the characteristics of the resin itself, the cured resin was tested using DMA and DSC. As a results, the decrease of Tg value were observed in the specific specimen which is exposed over 50 hrs at $260^{circ}F$. This means the change or degradative of resin properties is also related to the decrease of flatwise tensile properties. Accordingly, minimal exposure on the curing temperature is recommended for parts in order to prevent the delation and maintain the better condition.

  • To enhance the dental properties of polymeric dental restorative composite activated by visible-light, the surface of hydrophilic silica nanoparticle was hydrophobically treated using $\gamma$-methacryloxypropyltrimethoxysilane ($\gamma$-MPS) coupling agent. Structural properties and dispersity of silica in the composite was compared with the hydrophobicity of silica. Polymerization characteristic of the composite was also evaluated. Degree of hydrophobicity of silica nanoparticle was considerably improved with an increase of $\gamma$-MPS upto 40 wt% and converged asymptotically. Additionally, with an increase of the hydrophobicity of silica nanoparticle, the dispersity of silica was improved and the residual monomer in the composite was not detected from nuclear magnetic resonance experiment which indicated superior polymerization behavior.

  • Aiming at the mechanical and structural characteristics of the contact zone composite rock, the shear tests and numerical studies were carried out. The effects of the differences in mechanical properties of different materials and the normal stress on shear properties of contact zone composite samples were analyzed from a macro-meso level. The results show that the composite samples have high shear strength, and the interface of different materials has strong adhesion. The differences in mechanical properties of materials weakens the shear strength and increase the shear brittleness of the sample, while normal stress will inhibit these effect. Under low/high normal stress, the sample show two failure modes, at the meso-damage level: elastic-shearing-frictional sliding and elastic-extrusion wear. This is mainly controlled by the contact and friction state of the material after damage. The secondary failure of undulating structure under normal-shear stress is the nature of extrusion wear, which is positively correlated to the normal stress and the degree of difference in mechanical properties of different materials. The increase of the mechanical difference of the sample will enhance the shear brittleness under lower normal stress and the shear interaction under higher normal stress.

  • Core-shell polymers of methyl methacrylate-styrene system were prepared by sequential emulsion polymerization in the presence of sodium dodecyl benzene sulfonate(SDBS) as an emulsifier using ammonium persulfate(APS) in an initiator and the characteristics of these core-shell polymers were evaluated. Core-shell composite latex has the both properties of core and shell components in a particle, whereas polymer blends or copolymers show a combined physical properties of two homopolymers. This unique behavior of core-shell composite latex can be used in various industrial fields. However, in preparation of core-shell composite latex, several unexpected matters are observed, for examples, particle coagulation, low degree of polymerization, and formation of new particles during shell polymerization. To solve this matters, we study the effects of surfactant concentrations, initiator concentrations, and reaction temperature on the core-shell structure of PMMA-PSt and PSt-PMMA. Particle size and particles distribution were measured by using particle size analyzer, and the morphology of the core-shell composite latex was observed by using transmission electron microscope. Glass temperature was also measured by using differential scanning calorimeter. To identify the core-shell structure, pH of the composite latex solutions was measured.

  • A shear-flexible beam element is presented for the flexural analysis of laminated composite T-beams with arbitrary lay-ups. Based on the first-order shear deformable beam theory, the derived element takes into account warping shear deformation and all coupling coming from material anisotropy. Three different types of beam elements, namely, the two-noded, three-noded, and four-noded beam elements with seven degree-of-freedom per node are developed to solve governing equations. To demonstrate the versatility and accuracy of the beam element formulated, numerical results are performed for symmetric and anti-symmetric angle-ply composite T-beams under the uniformly distributed and concentrated load. The effects of fiber angle and shear deformation are investigated for different laminated stacking sequence. The quadratic and cubic elements are shown to be applicable to the flexural analysis of composite T-beams.

  • The objective of this study is to simulate the fracture behavior of composite structure bonded with more than 2 different cementitious materials. For this, concrete and cement were stacked and bonded in a direction perpendicular to loading and specimens were tested. Each constituent material of concrete and cement was fabricated independently also, and three point bending and indirect tensile tests were carried out for the acquisition of measured values applicable to the proposed model. As a result of comparing theoretical results and experimental ones, it was found that the proposed model derived from fictitious crack theory can be used to predict the fracture behavior of composite structures on the vases of well agreement with experimental results. It was also noted that the degree of improvement of fracture energies and strengths is greatly dependent on the stacking sequence of layers composing of a composite structure. Thus, it can be concluded that brittleness or ductility of a composite structure can be accomplished by a proper arrangement of layers on one's purpose throughout the proposed analysis.

  • Methyl methacrylate(MMA) was grafted onto microcrystalline cellulose(MCC) with ceric ammonium nitrate(CAN) as a redox initiator at the various conditions. The cellulose triacetate(CTA) composite films added MCC and MMA-grafted MCC powders were prepared on a glass plate. The graft yield(GY) and graft efficiency(GE) of the grafted MCC were calculated with the simple equations by the weight balance method. The double bond of C=O on the grafted MCC surfaces was confirmed by the fourier transform infrared spectroscopy with attenuated total reflection(FT-IT ATR) spectrophotometer. After grafting, the degree of crystallinity of cellulose powders was decresed by judging from x-ray diffraction(XRD) data. Scanning electron microscope(SEM) photos showed the only solvent and CAN solution could change the roughness of MCC powders and the effect of powder dispersions in composite matrix. The tensile strength of MCC/CTA composite films was decreased with increase of MCC powder contents. When 5% grafted MCC was added, the tensile strength of grafted MCC/CTA composite films was increased from 82.3 MPa to 97.2 MPa. The thermal property of powders was also analyzed by the thermogravimetric analysis(TGA).

  • The coercivity $H_c$ of $Nd_2Fe_{14}B$ magnets and $Nd_2Fe_{14}B/(Nd_{0.7}Dy_{0.3})_2Fe_{14}B$ composite magnets were calculated by computer simulation based on the micromagnetic theory under assumptions that $Nd_2Fe_{14}B$ and $(Nd_{0.7}Dy_{0.3})_2Fe_{14}B$ grains have magnetically deteriorated layers on their surfaces and diffusion of Dy from $(Nd_{0.7}Dy_{0.3})_2Fe_{14}B$ grains to $Nd_2Fe_{14}B$ ones through the contacting boundaries recovers the magnetic anisotropy of the deteriorated layers of $Nd_2Fe_{14}B$ grains. $H_c$ of $Nd_2Fe_{14}B/(Nd_{0.7}Dy_{0.3})_2Fe_{14}B$ composite magnets increased by the diffusion of Dy from $(Nd_{0.7}Dy_{0.3})_2Fe_{14}B$ grains to $Nd_2Fe_{14}B$ ones and the resultant recovery of the anisotropy field of deteriorated layers of $Nd_2Fe_{14}B$ grains. The $H_c$ vs fraction of $(Nd_{0.7}Dy_{0.3})_2Fe_{14}B$ grains curve were convex for the magnets with the degree of alignment between 0.94 and 0.99, which suggests that the above composite magnets have larger $H_c$ values than the alloy-magnets with the same Dy content, and that we can save the consumption of Dy by using these composite magnets.

  • For the simultaneous measurement of strain and damage signal, a fiber Bragg grating sensor system with a dual demodulator was proposed. One demodulator using a tunable Fabry-Perot filter can measure low-frequency signal such as strain and the other demodulator using a passive Mach-Zehnder interferometer can detect high-frequency signal such as damage signal or impact signal. Using a proposed fiber Bragg grating sensor system, both the strain and damage signal of a cross-ply laminated composite beam under tensile loading were simultaneously measured. Analysis of the strain and damage signals detected by single fiber Bragg grating sensor showed that sudden strain shifts were induced due to transverse crack propagation in the 90 degree layer of composite beam and vibration with a maximum frequency of several hundreds of kilohertz was generated.

  • Composite materials have been employed in the various engineering applications due to high mechanical performances including high strength-weight ratio and high degree of free formability. Due to complex manufacturing process, however, it can have intrinsic randomness in the material constants which affect the deterministic behavior of the composite structures. In this study, we suggest a formulation for stochastic finite element analysis considering the spatial randomness of Poisson's ratio. Considering the reciprocal relation between elastic moduli and Poisson's ratios in the two mutually orthogonal axes, one of two values of Poisson's ratio can be expressed in terms of the other. Using this, the relation between stress resultants and strains is derived in the ascending order of power of the stochastic field function, which can be directly used in the formulation to obtain the coefficient of variation of responses. The adequacy of the proposed scheme is demonstrated by comparison with the results of Monte Carlo analysis.
