  • This paper presents a system-of-systems (SoS) approach to the formal modeling of a cyber-physical system (CPS) for simulation-based analysis. The approach is based on a convergence technology for modeling and simulation of a highly complex system in which SoS modeling methodology, hybrid systems modeling theory, and simulation interoperation technology are merged. The methodology maps each constituent system of a CPS to a disparate model of either continuous or discrete types. The theory employs two formalisms for modeling of the two model types with formal specification of interfaces between them. Finally, the technology adapts a simulation bus called DEVS BUS whose protocol synchronizes time and exchange messages between subsystems simulation. Benefits of the approach include reusability of simulation models and environments, and simulation-based analysis of subsystems of a CPS in an inter-relational manner.

  • In this paper, we consider a discrete predator-prey system with Watt-type functional response and impulsive controls. First, we find sufficient conditions for stability of a prey-free positive periodic solution of the system by using the Floquet theory and then prove the boundedness of the system. In addition, a condition for the permanence of the system is also obtained. Finally, we illustrate some numerical examples to substantiate our theoretical results, and display bifurcation diagrams and trajectories of some solutions of the system via numerical simulations, which show that impulsive controls can give rise to various kinds of dynamic behaviors.

  • It is quite difficult to calculate the collapse probability of a system such as statically indeterminate structure that has many possible modes or paths to complete failure and the problem has remained essentially unsolved. A structure is synthesized by several components or elements and its capacity to resist the given loads is a function of the capacity of the individual element. Thus it is reasonable to assess the probability of failure of the system based upon those of its elements. This paper proposes an efficient technique to directly assess the reliability of a complex structural system from the reliabilities of its components or elements. The theory for the calculation of the probability of a structural system is presented. The target requirements of the method and the fundamental assumptions governing the method are clearly stated. A portal frame and two trusses are selected to demonstrate the efficiency of the method by comparing the results obtained from the proposed method to those from the existing methods in the literature.

  • Models of traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) are still difficult to grasp from the view of a Western-cultural background. For proper integration into science and clinical research, it is vital to think "out of the box" of classical sciences. Modern sciences, such as quantum physics, system theory, and information theory offer new models, that reveal TCM as a method to process information. For this purpose, we apply concepts of information theory to propose a "Chinese black box model," that allows for a non-deterministic, bottom-up approach. Considering a patient as an undeterminable complex system, the process of getting information about an individual in Chinese diagnostics is compared to the input-process-output principle of information theory and quantum physics, which is further illustrated by Wheeler's "surprise 20 questions." In TCM, an observer uses a decision-making algorithm to qualify diagnostic information by the binary polarities of "yang" (latin activity) and "yin" (latin structivity) according to the so called "8 principles" (latin 8 guiding criteria). A systematic reconstruction of ancient Chinese terms and concepts illuminates a scattered scientific method, which is specified in a medical context by Latin terminology of the sinologist Porkert [definitions of the Latin terms are presented in Porkert's appendix [1] (cf. Limitations)].

  • Scientific involvement in complex decision-making system, characterized by multicriteria phenomena and fuzziness inherent in the structure of information, requires suitable methods. Especially, when powerful dependent criteria are introduced and their weighted value structure is ignorant, the systems are become more complex. This paper presents a fuzzy dependenced relation model and fuzzy measure model for this kind of multicriteria decision-making. The model we propose is based on fuzzy relation and fuzzy measure in fuzzy systems theory. For the application of the model, a numdrical example is quoted.

  • Fractal geometry based upon the latest complex theory shows different features of design pattern quite different from the past. It is not yet sure which kind of effects it would bring about in the future, we think that it would help to create various spaces and organic design vision. Therefore we will look into the significances and adaptabilities in space design by studying fractal design principles of today's new model in space design

  • Given a complex submanifoldM of the projective space $\mathbb{P}$(T), the hyperplane system R on M characterizes the projective embedding of M into $\mathbb{P}$(T) in the following sense: for any two nondegenerate complex submanifolds $M{\subset}\mathbb{P}$(T) and $M^{\prime}{\subset}\mathbb{P}$(T'), there is a projective linear transformation that sends an open subset of M onto an open subset of M' if and only if (M,R) is locally equivalent to (M', R'). Se-ashi developed a theory for the differential invariants of these types of systems of linear differential equations. In particular, the theory applies to systems of linear differential equations that have symbols equivalent to the hyperplane systems on nondegenerate equivariant embeddings of compact Hermitian symmetric spaces. In this paper, we extend this result to hyperplane systems on nondegenerate equivariant embeddings of homogeneous spaces of the first kind.

  • This paper presents an investigation of the mode localization and frequency loci veering phenomena in an aircraft with disordered external stores. Two theoretical analyses are carried out to study the occurring mechanism of the two phenomena: condensation technique in the subspace spanned by modes of interest and geometric mapping theory in the complex plane. Two simple criteria for predicting the occurrence of the mode localization and frequency loci veering are put forward. The prediction of the phenomena by our theoretically proposed criteria is in good agreement with that obtained through numerical calculations of characteristic solutions of the disordered system.
