CRX: A Characteristic Transport Theory Code for Cell and Assembly Calculations in Reactor Core Design

  • A characteristic transport theory code CRX is developed and tested for cell and assembly calculations. Since the characteristic method treats explicitly (analytically) the streaming portion of the transport equation, CRX treats strong absorbers well and has no practical limitations placed on the geometry of the problem. To test the code, it was applied to three benchmark problems which consist of complex meshes and compared with other codes.

  • In the present study a mesh generation program is developed for three dimensional flow analyses with complex geometry. By the present program one can define vertices using various coordinate systems and cells for finite volume approach. Rendered display of the generated mesh can be also available in both orthographic and perspective projection modes. Through perspective projection mode, one can check the quality of generated mesh by moving around inside the mesh like a virtual reality. The examples of the program execution is given in the paper.

  • A swept volume is a useful tool for solving various types of interference problems. Previous works have concentrated on sweeping an object along an arbitrary path, that results in complex algorithms. This paper concerns the volume swept by translating an object along a linear path. After analyzing the structure of the swept volume, we present an incremental algorithm for constructing a swept volume. Our algorithm takes O(n/sup 2/ *.alpha.(n)+T/sub c/) time where n is the number of vertices in the original object and T/sub c/ is time for handling face cycles.

  • Recently, for the thermal system design in an engine room, the importance of the numerical analysis on the heat and fluid flow has been recognized. In the present study, the flow inside an engine room with complex geometry was analysed by use of TURBO-3D program being developed in KIST. Radiator and Cooling fan were simulated by porous media and momentum sources, and the result shows a good agreement with our expectation.

Numerical Simulation and Visualization of The Flow Around Savonius Rotor

  • Flow around Savonius rotor is studied by means of the numerical simulation. Three-dimensional incompressible Navier-Stokes equations are solved numerically. Overgrid system is employed in order to enable the flow calculation of complex geometry. The basic equations in each region are solved by using the standard MAC method. The physical quantities such as the velocity and the pressure among each region are transferred through the overlapping region which is common in each region. Some numerical results of static and rotating rotor will be presented.

An Upwind Meshfree Method for the Supersonic Flow

  • Recently much attention has been drawn to meshfree method since conventional methods such as FDM, FVM and FEM have suffered from difficulty with mesh generation for complex geometry and deformable bodies. In this paper, an upwind point collocation meshfree method developed by the authors is applied to two shock wave diffraction problems. One is the shock diffraction over a 90-degree corner and the other is the single Mach reflection on a ramp. The scheme showed stability and the results showed accuracy.

  • This paper propose Electronic Speckle Pattern Interferometry(ESPI) for reliability evaluation of electronic device. Especially, vibration problem in a fan of air conditioner, motor of washing machine and etc. is important factor to design the devices. However, it is difficult to apply previous method, accelerometer to the devices with lightweight and complex geometry. ESPI, non-contact measurement technique is applied for vibration analysis of a sirocco fan inside air conditioner. Vibration mode shapes, natural frequency and the range of the frequency are decided and compared with that of FEM analysis. In mechanical deign of new product, ESPI is able to supply effective design information.

  • Kunihiko Kodaira was born on March 16, 1915, and died on July 26, 1997. He graduated from the University of Tokyo in 1938 with a degree in mathematics. Not content with one degree, he graduated from the physics department at the same University in 1941. He received many honors for his outstanding research. The most noteworthy was the award of the Fields medal in 1954 for his work in algebraic geometry and complex analysis. In 1985, he was awarded the Wolf Prize. In this paper, a short outline of Kodaira's major works and new details of his life are given.

  • Using a new dynamic-explicity program SAIT_STAMP the analysis of forming a front door panel is presented. The analysis consists of 7 processes including drawing trimming flanging and springback. From the analysis results it is shown that adaptive refinement scheme and robust trimming algorithm enable SAIT_STAMP to simulate the multi-stage forming of automotive parts with large and complex geometry.

  • Springback after forming is the critical factor affecting the product quality. It is very difficult to predict the amount of springback not only because of complex geometry and material characteristics of the stamping product but because the methodology has not been established. In this study springback mechanism is introduced and experimental tryout and computer simulation are carried out for die design of automotive rear side frame. Futher springback was verified by comparing the result of computer simulation with the measured tryout result.
