We present a latent variable model-based approach to the analysis of gene expression patterns, coupled with topographic clustering. Aspect model, a latent variable model for dyadic data, is applied to extract latent patterns underlying complex variations of gene expression levels. Then a topographic clustering is performed to find coherent groups of genes, based on the extracted latent patterns as well as individual gene expression behaviors. Applied to cell cycleregulated genes of the yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae, the proposed method could discover biologically meaningful patterns related with characteristic expression behavior in particular cell cycle phases. In addition, the display of the variation in the composition of these latent patterns on the cluster map provided more facilitated interpretation of the resulting cluster structure. From this, we argue that latent variable models, coupled with topographic clustering, are a promising tool for explorative analysis of gene expression data.

In case that an interface crack exists in an infinite two-dimensional elastic bimaterial, the crack surface is insulated under traction free and the uniform heat flow vertical to the crack from infinite boundary is given. Temperature and stress potentials are obtained by using complex variable approach to solve Hilbert problems. The results are used to obtain thermal stress intensity factors. Only mode I thermal stress intensity factor occurs in case of the homogeneous material. Otherwise, mode I and II thermal stress intensity factor is much smaller than one of mode II.
We present one-color nonlinear wavepacket interferometry (WPI) signal calculations for a system of two electronic levels and one vibrational degree of freedom. We consider two cases, a displaced harmonic oscillator system, which can be treated analytically, and a model photodissociative system, whose WPI signal must be calculated by numerical wavepacket propagation. We show how signals obtained with different combinations of intrapulse-pair phase shifts can be combined to isolate the complex-valued overlap between a given onepulse target wavepacket and a variable three-pulse reference wavepacket. We demonstrate that with a range of inter- and intrapulse-pair delays the complex overlaps and variable reference states can be used to reconstruct the target wavepacket. We compare our results with previous methods for vibronic state reconstruction based on linear WPI and discuss further generalizations of our method.
The uncertainty often observed in experimental strengths of masonry constituents makes critical the selection of the appropriate inputs in finite element analysis of complex masonry buildings, as well as requires modelling the building ultimate load as a random variable. On the other hand, the utilization of expensive Monte Carlo simulations to estimate collapse load probability distributions may become computationally impractical when a single analysis of a complex building requires hours of computer calculations. To reduce the computational cost of Monte Carlo simulations, direct computer calculations can be replaced with inexpensive Response Surface (RS) models. This work investigates the use of RS models in Monte Carlo analysis of complex masonry buildings with random input parameters. The accuracy of the estimated RS models, as well as the good estimations of the collapse load cumulative distributions obtained via polynomial RS models, show how the proposed approach could be a useful tool in problems of technical interest.

The study suggests a method to analyze the vibration of the multi-stepped beam having the different circular cross-sections. The rotatory inertia, the shear deformation and the torque applied at both ends of the beam are considered in the governing equation. The complex displacement and the variable separation are introduced to derive the solution of the equation of each uniform beam element having constant cross-section. Then boundary conditions are applied to solve the total system. This method uses the mathematically exact solutions unlike numerical method such as the finite element method in solving the problem having the simultaneous differential equations of Timoshenko beam theory. the natural frequencies and the corresponding mode shapes are precise, especially the mode shapes are continuous.

A numerical study for the number of terms of a power series stress function and the effect of hybrid element size on stress analysis around a hole in loaded orthotropic composites is presented. The hybrid method coupling experimental and/or theoretical inputs and complex variable formulations involving conformal mappings and analytical continuity is used to calculate tangential stress on the boundary of the hole in uniaxially loaded, finite width glass epoxy tensile plate. The tests are done by rarying the number of terms, element size and nodal locations on the external boundary of the hybrid region. The numerical results indicate that the hybrid method is accurate and powerful in both experimental and numerical stress analysis.

The purpose of this study is to examine the effect factors in suburban rural landscape and significant factors of apartment complex which are effective to the skyline of the sloped mountains. Also it is to propose the basic resources to preserve and improve the suburban rural landscape. The target site is Young-In, which shows the typical of rural development. Sides were take in young-In City along the roads and selected for 20 pieces. This study used questionnaire about the suburban rural landscape surveying of 45 students in Kyunghee Univ.. Also we found 2 dependent variables and 8 independent variables totally. Moreover, we have analyzed the data using descriptive statistics, correlation analysis, and multiple linear regression method between the preference and physical factors, and between the vulnerability and perceptional factors. The results are as follows: 1) With the dependent variable of preference, the areas of "green space" and "agricultural productive lands" were highly influenced in the suburban rural landscape positively, but the areas of "apartment complex" and "other buildings" were negatively effected. 2) With the dependent variable vulnerability, the area "apartment complex" and cutting numbers of the "skyline of mountainous ridge" were proved as significantly positive factors, but the length of the "skyline of mountainous ridge" turned out to be a negative factor. Although this study has the difficulty to be generalized, it can be used for planning and designing of the apartment complex in suburban rural landscapes, and it will provide the basic guideline for preserving and managing of the suburban rural landscapes.uideline for preserving and managing of the suburban rural landscapes.

This paper represent the variable structure adaptive mode control technique which is new approach to implement the robust control of industrial robot manipulator with external disturbances and parameter uncertainties. Sliding mode control is a well-known technique for robust control of uncertain nonlinear systems. The robustness of sliding model controllers can be shown in contiuous time, but digital implementation may not preserve robustness properties because the sampling process limits the existence of a true sliding mode. the sampling process often forces the trajectory to oscillate in the neighborhood of the sliding surface. Adaptive control technique is particularly well-suited to robot manipulators where dynamic model is highly complex and may contain unknown parameters. Adaptive control algorithm is designed by using the principle of the model reference adaptive control method based upon the hyperstability theory. The proposed control scheme has a simple sturcture is computationally fast and does not require knowledge of the complex dynamic model or the parameter values of the manipulator or the payload. Simulation results show that the proposed method not only improves the performance of the system but also reduces the chattering problem of sliding mode control, Consequently, it is expected that the new adaptive sliding mode control algorithm will be suited for various practical applications of industrial robot control system.
This paper provides a numerical solution for multiple confocal elliptic dissimilar cylinders. In the problem, the inner elliptic notch is under the traction free condition. The medium is composed of many confocal elliptic dissimilar cylinders. The transfer matrix method is used to study the continuity condition for the stress and displacement along the interfaces. Two cases, or the infinite matrix case and the finite matrix case, are studied in this paper. In the former case, the remote tension is applied in y- direction. In the latter case, the normal loading is applied along the exterior elliptic contour. For two cases, several numerical results are provided.
This paper deals with a discrete simulation optimization method for designing a complex probabilistic discrete event system. The proposed algorithm in this paper searches the effective and reliable alternatives satisfying the target values of the system to be designed through a single run in a relatively short time period. It tries to estimate an autoregressive model, and construct mean and confidence interval for evaluating correctly the objective function obtained by small amount of output data. The experimental results using the proposed method are also shown.
