The purpose of the article is to address a new instructional approach to a complex engineering course. We design a novel instructional method that combines mobile technology, simulation program, collaborative teamwork, problem-solving process, and a variety of evaluation techniques. We suggested five instructional principles that might be required to change the fundamental educational process by which learning is done. The proposed instructional method is expected to aspire for new perspectives on complex learning environment. Nevertheless we solely began by the research on the development of students' complex problem-solving performance in a complex engineering course, the new instructional method in the article can promote the adoption of new instructional methods and strategies across different knowledge domains. In addition, the instructional method can provide a valuable bridge to acquisition and transfer of problem solving, motivation, and meaning learning.

In this study, we examined high school students' abilities for solving problems under single concept situations and complex concept situations and their mental capacities. Single concept situations are defined as the problems which can be solved with a scientific concept or principle and complex concept situations are the problems combined with more than 2 single concept situations. 152 11th-graders were participated in this study, who had taken natural science track. FIT 752 was used to measure their mental capacities. And an instrument, made up of six questions under three single concept situations and three complex concept situations, was used to assess students' problem solving abilities. As results, students' problem solving abilities were lower in complex concept situations than in single concept situations. There wasn't significant difference in mental capacities between of students who succeeded in solving problems and ones who did not under both single and complex concept situations. Although students solved the problems of single concept situations, some of them failed in solving the problems of complex concept situations composed of single concept situations which they succeeded in solving. They belonged to relatively low mental capacity group, of which students who failed in solving problems of complex situations had lower metal capacities than ones who succeeded in solving them. According to these results, it could be concluded that mental capacity is one of main variables which have influence on problem solving of complex concept situations composed of solvable single concept situations.
The core issue of ethical problem solving in engineering is to understand what exactly happened and to define its nature. Problems often arise mostly in morally complex situations. Traditional philosophical theories usually focus on extreme conflicts of interest and suggest moral theory-centered problem solving methods. However, these methods are not only difficult to specifically apply to real situations, but also are likely to fail to deal with actual moral issues in engineering fields. This study aims to develop more desirable ethical problem solving methods, based on STS (Science and Technology Studies) and engineering ethics combined. First, we have examined the engineering ethics with implications of an STS perspective, then have analyzed traditional ethical problem solving methods in a critical point of view. This study will suggest a new ethical problem solving method named Matrix Guide, based upon those analyses. Specifically, this study classifies four stages of problem definition, analysis, solving, and feedback. Here, we focus on how to combine technological and non-technological factors in each stage, when we are facing morally complex situations in engineering sectors.

This paper describe an approximation method for solving the minimum makespan problem of job shop scheduling with fuzzy processing time. We consider the multi-part production scheduling problem in a job shop scheduling. The job shop scheduling problem is a complex system and a NP-hard problem. The problem is more complex if the processing time is imprecision. The Fuzzy set theory can be useful in modeling and solving scheduling problems with uncertain processing times. Lee-Li fuzzy number comparison method will be used to compare processing times that evaluated under fuzziness. This study propose heuristic algorithm solving the job shop scheduling problem under fuzzy environment. In This study the proposed algorithm is designed to treat opinions of experts, also can be used to solve a job shop environment under the existence of alternate operations. On the basis of the proposed method, an example is presented.
In this article, the didactical analysis of complex numbers was explored in the context of mathematical connection. The result of the analysis can provide the useful tools for problem solving. The article shows that the complex numbers system plays the key roles in the school mathematics.

In this paper, we propose an a strategy using writing based on STEAM Instruction for information gifted students' creative problem-solving. It is needed a complex and dynamic interaction of variety elements for creative problem solving. And it should be provided experience encompassing various disciplines thorough convergence education for leading to the these interactions and developing the ability to solve complex problems. Writing has already been verified educational effects in a variety subjects. And writing gives a positive impact on creative problem solving by helping awareness of the problem and encouraging critical thinking. In addition, writing can be used as an effective tool for improving problem solving based on similarities between problem-solving process. Learners will find algorithm thorough the process analyzing and writing experience with high-tech products like vending machines, mobile phones and can learn naturally the principles of various disciplines used in real life. Furthermore, learners will experience interaction, convergence of various thinking and cultivate creative problem- solving skills.
This paper focuses on how an integrated or systemic approach is needed to both investigate and connect different kinds of interdisciplinary inquiry and knowledge within and beyond universities to encourage more productive collaboration with the other three ‘macro stakeholders’ - government, business, and the wider community. In this way universities can and should provide a greater leadership role in sustainability, innovation and policy studies. Such a framework is needed to also help to change the view of many that academics should just play a supporting role of providing specialised technical expertise only to the other macro stakeholders. The interdisciplinary and collaborative framework developed here is applied to the on-going water crisis in Malaysia - an exemplary complex problem-solving basis for seeking sustainable policy solutions to diverse challenges. As further discussed, this was applied also in practice to a multi-stakeholder seminar on addressing the difficult policy challenges of the Malaysian water industry and sector.

In the previous study, six factors which could disturb students' problem solving in an everyday context were identified and discussed. In this study, teaching materials to help students overcome those disturbing factors for successful problem solving in an everyday context were developed and applied to twenty-nine grade 10 students, and the effects of teaching materials were analyzed. According to the analysis of the correlation between the performance in everyday context problem solving and the benefit from the teaching materials, it was found that students who received the help from the teaching materials showed better performance with statistical significance. And students noted that teaching materials were helpful for them to solve the physics problems. Analyzing the overall performance of students in solving the everyday context problem, students in the experimental group showed better performance than the control group and this performance difference was larger among low-score students in school science testing. However, these differences were not statistically significant because the sample size was small. And, based on the analysis of interviews with students, it was also found that some students who showed low performance might not receive help from the teaching materials because the materials were too complex to be read easily, or because the basic concepts needed to solve the problem were not understood. Therefore, the results obtained from the interviews will be used to design more effective teaching for problem solving in an everyday context.
This paper has a purpose to find out the important points about linguistic factors suited to the assessment purpose and mathematics teaching/learning that a word-problem sentence has to possess. We also examine the degree of understanding of sentence and the perceptive/emotional reactions of students toward two different kinds of word-problem sentences that have same mathematical contents, but different linguistic structures. The objects of this thesis are 124 students from the third to sixth grade in an elementary school. We execute assessment of simple-sentence-word-problem and complex-sentence-word-problem that have same mathematical contexts, but different linguistic structures. Then we have compared and examined their own process of solving the two types word-problems and we make up questionnaire and have an interview with them. The conclusions are as followings: First, simple-sentence-word-problem is more successful to suggest an information for solving a problem than complex one. Second, it is hard to find the strategy for solving a problem in complex-sentence-word-problem than simple one. Third, students think that suggested information and mathematical knowledge are different according to the linguistic structure in the process of perceiving the information after reading a word-problem. Fourth, in spite of same sentence type, the negative mental reaction is showed greatly to complex-sentence-word-problem even before solving a problem.

In this paper we describe Task-Based Problem Solving Adapters (TPSAs) for modeling a humam solution (through activity-centered analysis) to a software solution (in form of computer-based artifact). TPSAs are derived from the problem solving pattern or consistent problem solving structures/strategies employed by practitioners while designing solutions to complex problems. The adapters developed by us lead toward human-centeredness in their design and underpinning that help us to address the pragmatic task constraints through a range of technologies like neural networks, fuzzy logic, and genetic algorithms. We also outline an example of applying the TPSAs to develop a working system for assisting sales engineers of an electrical manufacturing firm in preparing indent and monitoring the status of orders in the company.
