Purpose: This study was done to develop a nursing competency scale according to a clinical ladder system for intensive care nurses. Methods: Index of content validation was done by 20 clinical experts and 80 nurses in Intensive Care Units (ICU). Results: The process and results of study are as follows. First, 12 nursing competencies were used in the establishment of the clinical ladder system (Jang, 2000). Second, the first draft of the competency lists was developed. It was based on the clinical nurses' behavioral indicators of nursing competency by Jang (2000), and was modified and supplemented through various literature reviews including competency standards for specialist intensive care nurses in Australia and consultation with 2 clinical nurses with over 10 years experience in the ICU. Third, the draft was examined by 20 clinical experts for content validity. Finally, the final draft was analysed using clinical validity where 20 nurses in each ladder participated. The final number of items was fixed at 309. Conclusion: The tool represents expected nursing competency of nurses working in ICU. Intensive care nurses can recognize their strengths and weaknesses, and identify directions for their professional growth by analysing results of their competency evaluation using this tool.
This study aims to identify constructs of cultural competency specifically relevant to the Korean society and to test its reliability and validity among human service workers. For the purpose of the study, authors conducted focus group interviews and conferences with human service workers to draw the concept of cultural competency. Further, this study conducted to two separate pilot tests with 20 social workers with practice experiences in order to clarify descriptions and relevance of scale items. Based on the literature review on the concept of cultural competency and analysis of focus group interviews, 40 items were initially constructed and then were reduced to a 32-item scale after two separate pilot studies. Meantime, suggestions made by an advisory group were also reflected in the scale development process. Finally, one hundred ninety four workers in social service agencies were recruited to evaluate the relevance of the scale items in a 5 point Likert scale. Through exploratory and confirmatory factor analysis, 4 main factors were identified: 1) competency to use culturally relevant skills, 2) cultural awareness and sensitivity, 3) cultural knowledge, and 4) efforts to overcome cultural differences. These factors were consistent with sub-concepts of cultural competency in other studies. Confirmatory factor analysis also showed that the model fitness was at the high level and convergent analysis with the similar scale also showed high correlations. Internal consistency also remained at a high level. Based on the results, implication for social work practice and education were discussed.
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to identify registered nurses learning needs about physical assessment. Specifically, what are the perceived competency, frequency of skill use and the unmet training needs. Methods: The study was an exploratory survey study. The sample was 104 registered nurses. Data were collected through three instruments: The Perceived Competency in Physical Assessment Scale, the Frequency of Physical Assessment Scale, and the Training Needs of Physical Assessment Scale which incorporated 30 core Physical Assessment skills. Descriptive statistics, t-test, and Pearson's correlation coefficient were used to analyze the data. Results: Auscultation of heart and lung sounds and inspection of the spine were rated by the subjects as physical assessment skills they feel least competent and also were less frequently performed. The most competent area for physical assessment was neurological system. The respiratory and abdominal system was identified as two systems that more education would be needed. Nurses with less than one year of working experience reported needing more training. Nurses with more than five years of clinical work experience performed physical assessment more frequently than nurses with less than five year of work experience. The perceived competency was positively related to the frequency of physical assessment. Conclusion: Continuing education is necessary to further train registered nurses regarding physical assessment skills and the program needs to be focused on the area which nurses are less competent for and have high training need.
The purpose of this study is, first, to develop a Therapy Competency Enhancement Program for Novice Play-therapists Using Traditional Play to enhance therapy Competency and second, to examine the program's effectiveness. The program consists of 10 sessions and each session employs a variety of traditional plays. The Therapeutic relationship Scale and Playfulness Scale were used as a pre-test and post-test respectively. The data were analyzed by the SPSS 18.0 program, which applied the Mann-Whiteney U test and Wilcoxon rank sum test. Twelve novice play therapists participated in ten sessions of the Therapy Competency Enhancement Program, and were compared with the control group of twelve novice play therapists who did not receive treatment. The treatment group statistically showed significant enhancement in therapeutic relationships, and playfulness in comparison to the control group. It was concluded that the Therapy Competency Enhancement Program for Novice Play-therapists Using Traditional Play was effective for enhancing therapeutic relationships and playfulness. This study has significance in its attempt to develop a Therapy Competency Enhancement program to improve the therapeutic relationship, and playfulness of novice play therapists by Traditional Play.
The purpose of this study is to develop the self-reported measurement for engineering design competency. In this study, engineering design competency is defined as the overall individual ability that is necessary for an engineer for his/her successful accomplishment of engineering design. This measurement was developed through reviewing documents, defining factor and sub-factor, making an item and constructing validity verification. The self-reported measurement for engineering design competency consists of 6 factors and 40 items. 6 factors cover competency of design performance, competency of considering economic and social influence, competency of utilizing mathematical and scientific knowledge, competency of teamwork, competency of design-centered thinking and competency of collecting and using data. A 6-points Likert scale was used for each item.
This study is conducted with the aim of identify the factors constituting learning competencies for engineering college students, and developing and validating the scale to measure them. To this end, literature and prior research were reviewed and focus group interview was conducted with high-achieving learners of K University in the capital region of Korea. According to previous research, 3 learning competency groups, 12 learning competencies and 41 sub-competencies were derived. Delphi survey was carried out twice, 28 sub-competencies were derived among the 41 sub-competencies through this process. 166 initial items were developed through literature review and FGI. Then, 130 items were confirmed by verifying content validity in the second Delphi survey. Based on this, pilot test were performed with 110 students in K university, and an interview was conducted with 50 students who participated in the pilot test. Reflecting the pilot test results, 1 sub-competency and 22 items were deleted. After the confirmed pilot test results, the main test were performed with all current students in K University. According to the main test result, the validity of the scale and the model fit was verified for the response data of 823 students, and the scale consisting of a total of 105 items was confirmed. The final learning competencies scale included three competency groups and 10 learning competencies. It is expected that this scale can be contributed to support the development their learning competencies for academic success of engineering college students, who are future learners.
Purpose: Developmental care has been recognized as a very important component for the development and health promotion of preterm infants. However, research on how to assess developmental nursing competency has not been studied as expected. This study was done to develop and evaluate a new scale to measure nursing competency for developmental support of preterm infants. Methods: Concept analysis was done with using the Hybrid model of Schwartz-Barcott and Kim (2000), from which a preliminary new scale (30 items) was developed. To test the validity and reliability of the new scale being developed, data were collected from 122 NICU nurses at 4 hospitals in 3 cities in the Republic of Korea, from December, 2014 to March, 2015. Results: The final version of the Developmental Support Competency Scale for Nurses (DSCS-N) caring for premature infants was a 4-point Likert type scale, consisting of 19 items, and categorized as 6 factors, explaining 62.5% of the total variance. Each of the factors were named as follows; 'environmental support' (4 items), 'parental support' (3 items), 'interaction' (3 items), 'critical thinking' (3 items), 'professional development' (3 items), and 'partnership' (3 items). The Cronbach's ${\alpha}$ coefficient for the scale was .83 and the reliability of the subscales ranged from .60~.76. Conclusion: The psychometric evaluation of the new scale demonstrated an acceptable validity and reliability. Findings indicate that the DSCS-N can be used as the tool to test the effect of educational programs for nurses and contribute to advance developmental care for preterm infants.
