  • A series of fire tests was conducted to examine the fire characteristics of flaming and smoldering combustion of engineered wood products, which have been widely used for furniture and finishing materials in buildings. The engineered wood products of MDF, plywood, and chipboard were ignited by a radiant cone heater with incident heat flux of $50kW/m^2$. During the fire test, key parameters representing the fire characteristics such as the heat release rate, yield rate of combustion product, and effective heat of combustion were quantified in terms of thickness. The tests show two peak points of HRRPUA due to lateral fire propagation in the initial stage, followed by later fire penetration through the specimen thickness. The mass loss rate of flaming combustion was 5 times higher than that of smoldering combustion, while the CO yield rate of smoldering combustion was 10 times higher than that of flaming combustion. This study can contribute to the understanding of fire behavior of wood combustibles and provide useful data for fire analysis.

  • Stability rating of KSR-III rocket engine is conducted based on stability rating tests in the course of development of KSR-III rocket engine. Rocket engine is approved to have combustion stabilization ability when it can suppress the external perturbation or pressure oscillation with finite amplitude and recover the original stable combustion. Rocket engine in flight may be perturbed by unexpectedly large-amplitude pressure oscillation and thus a designer should not only assure combustion stabilization ability of the engine but also quantify the stabilization capacity. For this, principal quantitative parameters and their evaluation are introduced. To verify dynamic stability of KSR-III rocket engine, six stability rating tests have been conducted. Based on these test results, such parameters are quantified and thereby, the stabilization capacity of KSR-III rocket engine is evaluated.

  • A feasible way to fabricate in-situ Al/TiC composites was investigated. An elemental mixture of $Al-TiO_2-C$ pellet was directly added into an Al melt at $800-920^{\circ}C$ to form TiC by self-combustion reaction. The addition of CuO initiates the self-combustion reaction to form TiC in $1-2{\mu}m$ at the melt temperature above $850^{\circ}C$. Besides the CuO addition, a diluent element of excess Al plays a significant role in the TiC formation by forming a precursor phase, $Al_3Ti$. Processing parameters such as CuO content, the amount of excess Al and the melt temperature, have affected the combustion reaction and formation of TiC, and their influences on the microstructures of in-situ Al/TiC composites are examined.

  • The present study discuss about numerical methods to analyze design parameters of pyrolysis-melting incineration system. Various numerical methods of different viewpoint are introduced to simulate the performance of the system. Process analysis of the overall system is the beginning procedure of basic design process. Heat and material flow of each element are connected and are influential to each other, hence, an appropriate process modeling should be executed to prevent from unacceptable process design concepts that may results in system failure. Models to simulate performance of each elementary facility generate valuable informations on design and operation parameters, and, derive the basic design concept to be optimized. A pyrolysis model derived from waste bed combustion model is introduced to simulate the mass conversion and heat transfer in the pyrolysis process. CFD(Computational fluid dynamics) is an effective method to optimize the thermal reacting flow in various reactors such as combustor and heat exchanger. Secondary air jets arrangement and the shape of the combustor could be optimized by CFD technology.

  • Present-day there are two of theories which have considerable scientific support to explain the knock phenomenon in S.I. engine, the detonation theory and the autoignition theory. But they still have some problems to explain effects of knock parameters, i.e.. compression ratio, spark timing, mixture quality, engine speed, ect, on knocking process in S.I. engine. Accordingly, it is essential to find out whish is more adequate theory of two and to develop the method of analyzing knock phenomenon, that is the aim of this paper. The Authors develop the method of predicting transient temperature and pressure at the end-gas zone during the combustion period and analyze knocking process by this method based on the knock theories. The caluculated values based on the autoignition theory show reasonablly correct relations between knock parameters and knock process but there is no evidence of knock occurred by detonation theory through the calculation according to the all parameters. The authors find out that the autoignition theory is more adequate than detonation theory to analyze knocking process in S.I. engine.

  • HVOF thermal spray guns are now being widely used to produce protective coatings, on the surfaces of engineering components. HVOF technology employs a combustion process to heat the gas flow and melt the coating materials which are particles of metals, alloys or cermets. Particle flow which is accelerated to high velocities and combustion gas stream are deposited on a substrate. In order to obtain good quality coatings, the analysis of torch design must be performed. The reason is that the design parameters of torch influence gas dynamic behaviors. In this study, numerical analysis is performed to predict the gas dynamic behaviors in a HVOF thermal spray gun with various torch shapes. The CFD model is used to deduce the effect of changes in nozzle geometry on gas dynamics. Using a commercial code, FLUENT which uses Finite Volume Method and SIMPLE algorithm, governing equations have been solved for the pressure, velocity and temperature distributions in the HVOF thermal spray torch.

  • Combustion instability is a common phenomenon in a ducted flame burner and is known as accompanying low frequency oscillation. This is due to the interaction between unsteady heat release rate and sound pressure field, that is, thermoacoustic feedback. In Rayleigh criterion, combustion instability is triggered when the heat addition is in phase with acoustic oscillation. A Rijke type burner with a pre-mixed flame is built for investigating the effect of Reynolds number and equivalence ratio on thermoacoustic oscillation. The results suggest that the frequency of max, oscillation is dependent on Reynolds number and equivalence ratio whereas its magnitude is not a strong function of these two parameters.

  • Lean premix combustion is a best method in low $NO_x$ gas turbine combustor and we must know the characteristics of NO emission in high temperature and pressure condition in premix flame. Numerical analysis was performed to investigate the NO emission characteristics by adopting a counterflow as a model problem using detailed chemical kinetics. Methane $(CH_4)$ was used as a test fuel which is the main fuel of natural gas. The tested parameters were stretch rate, equivalence ratio, initial temperature, and pressure in premix flame. Results showed that NO emission was high in low stretch rate, near stoichiometric equivalence ratio, high initial temperature, and high pressure. Also, the pressure effect was sensitive in high temperature condition.

  • The developent of ceramic combustor is being increased beca- use of the excellent physical properties of ceramic material, that is, high-resistant strength, high emissivity power and high corrosin-resistance. Ceramic combustor has been interested in the application of ultra-lean combustion for low NO$_{x}$ emission and gaseuos waste incineration with good combustion. This experimental study was conducted to investigate the combustion and emission characteristics of wall recess type ceramic combustor with equivalence ratio, mixture flow velocity and wall recess depth as parameters. The results in this study are as follows: 1. Wall recess played a important role to extend flame stability region. 2. The peak temperature of gas was peoportional to equivalence ratio, mixture flow velocity and wall recess depth. 3. The static pressure of mixing chamber and inlet temperature depended on the position of flame zone. 4. NO reduction was achieved by lean mixture without lower combustibility.y.
