In the combustion modeling of non-premixed flames, the mixture fraction conserved scalar approach is widely utilized because reactants are mixed at the molecular level before burning and atomic elements are conserved in chemical reactions. In the mixture fraction approach, combustion process is simplified to a mixing problem and the interaction between chemistry and turbulence could be modelled by many sophisticated combustion models including the flamelet model and CMC. However, most of the mixture fraction approach is restricted to one mixture system. In this study, the flamelet model based on the two-feed system is extended to the multiple fuel-feeding systems by the two mixture fraction conserved scalar approach.
Six different size of torch-ignition device were applied in a constant volume combustion chamber for evaluating the effects of torch-ignition on combustion. The torch-ignition device was designed for six different volumes and same orifice size. The combustion pressures were measured to calculate the mass burn fraction and combustion enhancement rate. In addition, the flame propagations were visualized by shadowgraph method for the qualitative comparison. The result showed that the combustion pressure and mass burn fraction were increased when using the torch ignition device. And the combustion duration were decreased. The combustion enhancement rates of torch-ignition cases were improved in comparison with conventional spark ignition. Finally, the visualization results showed that the torch-ignition induced faster burn than conventional spark ignition due to the earlier transition to turbulent flame and larger flame surface, during the initial stage. Finally, the initial flame propagation was affected by torch-ignition volume.

In-cylinde flow and mixture formation are key contributors to both idle stability and combustion stability at part load condition in SI engine. The real time measurements of air-fuel ration and in- cylinder residual gas fraction are particularly important to obtain a better understanding of the mechanisms for combustion and emissions especially during cold start and throttle transient condition. This paper reports the cycle resolved measurements of residual gas fraction and equivalence ration near speak plug with value timing change and their effects on combustion characteristics at part load. The results showed that the effect of intake value opening on the residual gas fraction was smaller than that of exhaust valve closing because of the decreases of exhaust gas reverse flow from exhaust port. The variation of equivalence ratio near spark plug increased with the increase of value overlap and it closely related with heat release rate and combustion stability

The aim of this paper is controlling ignition timing and load in homogeneous charge compression ignition (HCCI) combustion with low cetane number fuel, hydrogen. Homogeneous charge compression ignition (HCCI) combustion is an advanced combustion technology that achieves higher thermal efficiency and lower $NO_x$ emissions than that of conventional combustion system. Dimethyl ether (DME), which has been researched widely as the most attractive alternative fuel of diesel, is attractive for HCCI combustion because of the easy evaporation. In this study, the single cylinder DME engine operated with a direct injection system has been used to investigate combustion processes and emissions of DME HCCI with a premixed hydrogen supply. The experiment was carried out under various engine speed and fraction rates of hydrogen. As a result, the increase of fraction rates of hydrogen retard the DME ignition timing and eliminated the knocking during high engine speed condition. IMEP was increased with increase of fraction rates of hydrogen by 30%. 40% of the fraction rates of hydrogen resulted in misfiring. The $NO_x$ emission was reduced by increasing the fraction rates of hydrogen, but HC emission was increased.

An experimental study presents characteristics of combustion in a combustion chamber by port deactivation valve for economy and emissions standards. In order to use combustion properties data it is necessary to build some data base, which use cylinder pressure sensor, etc. Port deactivation valve has been developed to satisfy requirement of achieving sufficient swirl generation to improve the combustion. A feasibility and necessity of combustion pressure based cylinder spark timing control has been examined. So, this was obtained the Coefficient of Variation(COV) and the mass-burned(MFB). The characteristics of pressure ratio fraction is similar to that of mass-burned fraction. Using the results of the test, the effects of the combustion chamber can be improved combustion stability by port deactivation.

Smoke is emitted in diesel engines because fuel injected into the high-temperatured and high-pressured combustion chamber burns with its mixture with insufficient oxygeny. In consideration of air pollution, above all, it is necessary to illuminate the cause of smoke emission in diesel engines. The smoke emission, which is characteristic of diffusion combustion in diesel engines, results from pyrolysis of fuel not mixed with air. Therefore the smoke emission is dependent on diffusion combustion quantity, which is in turn controlled by engine parameter. The study aims at making clear and interpreting the interdependence of smoke emission in diesel engines with heat released within combustion chamber, camparing diffusion combustion quantity according to each engine parameter (air fuel ratio, injection timing, and engine speed), and showing the relation between smoke emission and fraction of diffusion combustion through experiment.

Breakup and ignition of single droplet were experimentally investigated using two independent Nd-YAG lasers. The emulsified fuel was made from n-dodecane and water while varying the relative volumetric fraction. As a result of visualization, breakup and ignition behaviors were dependent on the fraction. Luminosity from the secondary droplets increased as the water fraction decreased. Ignition did not occur below 80% of the n-dodecane fraction.

The residual gas in an spark-ignition engine is one of important factors on emissions and performance such as combustion stability. With high residual gas fractions, flame speed and maximum combustion temperature are decreased and these are deeply related with combustion stability especially at idle and NOx emission at relatively high engine load. Therefore, there is a need to characterize the residual gas fraction as a function of the engine operating load. Therefore, there is a need to characterize the residual gas fraction as a function of the engine operating parameters. In the present study, the quantitative measurement technique of residual gas fraction was studied by using Fast Response Flame Ionization Detector(FRFID). The measuring technique and model for estimation of residual gas fraction were reported in this paper. By the assuming that the raw signal from FRFID saturates with the same slope for firing and misfiring cycle, in-cylinder hydrocarbon(HC) concentration can be estimated. Residual gas fraction can be obtained from the in-cylinder HC concentration measured at firing and motoring condition. The developed measurement and calibration procedure were applied to the limited engine operating and design condition such as intake manifold pressure and valve overlap. The results show relevant trends by comparing those from previous studies.

The present work is a continuation of our previous study to investigate the effects of parameters such as equivalence ratio, hydrogen supplement rate and initial pressure on combustion characteristics in a disk-shaped constant volume combustion chamber. The main results obtained from the study can be summarized as follows. The flames in near stoichiometric mixture of methane-air are propagated with a spherical shape, but in excess rich or lean mixtures are propagated with a elliptical shape. And, they are changed to an unstable elliptical shape flame with very regular cells by increasing the hydrogen supplement rate. Also, flame is sluggishly propagated at increased initial pressure in combustion chamber. Volume fraction of burned gas and flame radius as the combustion characteristics are increased by increasing the hydrogen supplement rate, especially at the combustion middle period, but then are slowly increased by increasing the initial pressure.
