The soot yield has been studied by a premixed propane-oxygen-inert gas combustion in a specially designed disk-type constant-volume combustion chamber to investigate the effect of pressure, temperature and turbulence on soot formation. Premixtures are simultaneously ignited by eight spark plugs located on the circumference of chamber at 45 degrees intervals in order to observe the soot formation under high temperature and high pressure. The eight converged flames compress the end gases to a high pressure. The laser schlieren and direct flame photographs with observation area of 10 mm in diameter are taken to examine the behaviors of flame front and gas flow in laminar and turbulent combustion. The soot volume fraction in the chamber center during the final stage of combustion at the highest pressure is measured by the in-situ laser extinction technique and simultaneously the corresponding burnt gas temperature by the two-color pyrometry method. The changes of pressure and temperature during soot formation are controlled by varying the initial charging pressure and the volume fraction of inert gas compositions, respectively. It is found that the soot yield increases with dropping the temperature and raising the pressure at a constant equivalence ratio, and the soot yield in turbulent combustion decreases as compared with that in laminar combustion because the burnt gas temperature increases with the drop of heat loss for laminar combustion.

Test results of combustion chamber to verify the operation and the combustion performance at low pressure, design and off-design conditions for 30ton-class liquid rocket engine were described. The combustion chamber has nominal chamber pressure of 60 bar, propellant mass flow rate of 89 kg/s, and nozzle expansion of 12. Effects of chamber pressure on combustion characteristic velocity are largely affected by mixture ratio. The specific impulse of combustion chamber is proportional to the chamber pressure regardless of the mixture ratios. The present results can be used as the base to predict the combustion performance of large sized chamber at high pressure while demonstrating the possibility of low pressure firing test of large sized chamber.

The post chamber in hybrid rocket is installed to induce additional increase in combustion enthalpy by allowing continuous burning of the liquefied fuels. When paraffin wax fuel is used, unsteady pressure oscillations are observed only at the beginning of combustion. This study intends to investigate the effect of additional combustion of liquefied fuel droplets on the occurrence of unsteady pressure fluctuations. For this, the combustion in post-chamber was visualized and image analysis using POD(Proper Orthogonal Decomposition) technique was performed. In addition, the hypothesis was proposed on the occurrence of unsteady pressure oscillations by identifying the modes including the behavior of droplets through mode reconstruction. Conducting a series of combustion tests, the amount of liquefied fuel flowing into the post chamber and the generation of fuel droplets were controlled. Also, the changes in frequency characteristic of unsteady pressure oscillation were monitored. As a result, the unsteady pressure oscillations observed in paraffin wax combustion were the result of additional combustion of fuel droplets generated in the post chamber.
The purpose of the research is to investigate of diesel spray combustion for simultaneously reduce way NOx and PM. The pressure diesel injection were done into intermediates that are generated by very lean DME HCCI combustion using a RCM. The concentration of intermediate could not be directly measured; we estimated it by CHEMKIN calculation. DME HCCI characteristic is surveyed. Validations of the CHEMKIN calculation were confirmed pressure rise of an experiment and pressure rise of a calculation. Using a framing streak camera captured two dimensional spontaneous luminescence images from chemical species at low temperature reaction(LTR) and high temperature reaction (HTR). Also, the combustion events were observed by high-speed direct photography, the ignition and combustion were analyzed by the combustion chamber pressure profiles.
The objective of this work is to investigate the effect of swirl, injection pressure and pilot injection on D.I.Diesel combustion by using a transparent engine system. The test engine is equipped with common rail injection system to obtain high pressure and to control injection timing and duration. In this study, the combustion analysis and steady flow test were conducted to estimate the heat release rate from in-cylinder pressure and pilot injection was investigated by using LII technique. As the results, high injection pressure was found to shorten ignition delay as well as enhance peak pressure and heat release rate was greatly affected by injection timing and pilot injection. In addition, the results showed that the period of soot formation corresponded to the diffusion flame.

Hot-firing tests were performed on two 30 tonf-class regenerative cooling combustion chambers, with different injector distribution and wall cooling method. In the paper, the combustion stability test results were analyzed and presented. The pressure fluctuation and stability rating test(SRT) results of the combustion chambers were examined to evaluate combustion stability. The combustion chambers exhibited satisfactory results on combustion stability. The RMS values of the chamber pressure fluctuation were less than 3% of the chamber pressure and the decay time of artificial pressure peaks was measured to be around 10% of the reference decay time. It is interesting that the RMS values of pressure fluctuation in the combustion chamber with film cooling are smaller than those in the chamber with cooling injectors at the periphery row.

We made a selection of engine operating conditions in the natural aspiration type diesel engine as load and speed. The effects on the power, smoke emission and cylinder pressure characteristics of these variations in operating conditions were observed experimentally. Also, the smoke emission was predicted by using the Arrhenius equation and empirical equation of the smoke emission was made. At the same time, the correlations, between the combustion and smoke emission characteristic were examined. From the above results, it is clear that to prevent power dropping and to decrease exhaust fume whin the conditions are changed, one should improve the intake system. To do this, the best way is to lower the air-fuel mixing ratio. We found that the parameters of the indicated mean effective pressure, maximum pressure and its location and combustion duration, etc. change the motion in accordance with the conditions described above. Also, we found that the variation of the pressure cycle comes from an amplified variation of the early part of process. From the analysis of comparing combustion and exhaust fume, the exhaust fume is produced at the latter time of combustion and decreased when the combustion ratio is higher. Also, we developed a special formula which can predict the exhaust fume value according to the engine load and speed.

A combustion chamber is designed and fabricated for studying the combustion characteristics of counterflow flames at elevated pressure and establishing the fundamental combustion database of counterflow flames. The combustion chamber design aims to allow the maximum operating pressure of 11 bar and be able to conduct flame visualization and the measurements of flame extinction limits, flame temperature and combustion emissions at elevated pressure. Preliminary tests for counterflow nonpremixed $CH_4-NH_3-N_2$/air flames at 1-3 bar have been conducted, and the results confirm the proper operation of the designed chamber.

Pressure resonance frequency that is caused in the combustion chamber can be interpreted by acoustic analysis. Until now the pressure resonance has been assumed and calculated to a disc type combustion chamber that neglected the combustion chamber height because the knock occurs near the TDC(top dead center). In this research FEM(finite element method) has been used to calculate the pressure resonance frequency inside the experimental engine combustion. The error of the resonance frequency obtained by FEM has decreased about 50% compared to the calculation of Draper's equation. Due to the asymmetry in the shape of the combustion chamber that was neglected in Draper's equation we could find out that a new resonance frequency could be generated. To match the experimental results, the speed of sound that satisfies Draper's equation is selected 13% higher than the value for pent-roof type combustion chamber.

The present study was investigated combustion characteristics of methane-air mixtures at stratified charge in a constant volume combustion chamber. The main results obtained from this study can be summarized as follows. In case of ${\phi}_s=1.0$, total burning times greatly affected rather than initial time of pressure increase and maximum combustion pressure. In case of ${\phi}_t=1.0$, initial time of pressure increase and total burning times were affected considerably in comparison with the case of ${\phi}_s=1.0$. Also, even the very lean mixture which total equivalence ratio is ${\phi}_t=0.69$(${\phi}_s=1.0$, ${\phi}_m=0.65$), by changing configuration of the critical passage-hole and using a stratified mixture, it is possible to decrease substantially the initial time of pressure increase. total burning times and NOx concentration without deteriorating combustion characteristics such as maximum combustion pressure, rate of heat release etc. in comparison with the use of single chamber(in case of ${\phi}=1.0$) only. Specifically, our trends were revealed remarkably in the case of Type D which is reduced a flame contact area of sub-chamber side of the passage-hole.
