Gasification is a therm-chemical conversion process to convert various solid fuels into gaseous fuels under limited supply of oxygen in high temperature environment. Considering current availability of biomass resources in this country, the gasification is more attractive than any other technologies in that the process can accept various combustible solid fuels including plastic wastes. Mixed fuels of biomass and polyethylene pellets were used in gasification experiments in this study in order to assess their potential for synthesis gas production. The results showed that higher reaction temperatures were observed in mixed fuel compared to woodchip experiments. In addition, carbon monoxide, hydrogen, and methane concentrations were increased in the synthesis gas. Heating values of the synthesis gas were also higher than those from woodchip gasification. There are hundred thousand tons of agricultural plastic wastes generated in Korea every year. Co-gasification of biomass and agricultural plastic waste would provide affordable gaseous fuels in rural society.
Gasification of rice chaff has traditionally been used to produce a clean fuel suitable for lighting, heating and engine application. Since oil crisis, a series of experimental study has been performed to drive a farm engine by agricultural wastes. We produced a combustible gas from rice chaff with a fixed bed up-draught gasifier system, and applied it to a conventional farm kerosene engine. This experiment was quite successful one. We could drive the farm engine with maximum horse power of 9 PS by rice chaff gas which was fairly competitive to the continuous horse power of 10 PS obtained when kerosene was used. Problems of tar existence in gas have been discussed, but we are confident that these can be solved in near future. Development and application of the gasification process will help our farm economy, not only by conserving petroleum oil but by utilizing agricultural wastes.
A dual micro gas sensor array was fabricated using nano sized $SnO_2$ thin films which had good sensitivities to CO and combustible gases, or $H_2S$ gas for air quality sensors in automobile. The already existed air quality sensor detects oxidizing gases and reducing gases, the air quality sensor(AQS), located near the fresh air inlet detected the harmful gases, the fresh air inlet door/ventilation flap was closed to reduce the amount of pollution entering the vehicle cabin through HVAC(heating, ventilating, and air conditioning) system. In this study, to make $SnO_2$ thin film AQS sensor, thin tin metal layer between 1000 and $2000{\AA}$ thick was oxidized between 600 and $800^{\circ}C$ by thermal oxidation. The gas sensing layers such as $SnO_2$, $SnO_2$(pt) and $SnO_2$(+CuO) were patterned by metal shadow mask for simple fabrication process on the silicon substrate. The micro gas sensors with $SnO_2$(+Pt) and $SnO_2$(CuO) showed good selectivity to CO gas among reducing gases and good sensitivity to $H_2S$ that is main component of bad odor, separately.
The structure performance of a sealed power facilities and the explosion simulation contains significant amounts of scatter, and variability has been characterized in material properties of the structure, a sealed space density, combustible gas volume, gas concentrativeness, ignition site, and gas volume. In order to deal with such uncertainties, structural reliability analysis calculates the failure probability and the reliability index relevant to selected limit states providing quantitative measures of these uncertainties. In this study, structure safety assessment method on the explosion of a sealed power facilities was proposed by using the response surface method (RSM).
LPG refueling include a lot of risk done by human beings, dealing with highly combustible gas, so, during the refueling, the leakage initiated by human errors can result in a catastrophic accident. Therefore, this research tried to show what kind of tasks would include the high probability of the human errors and what should be considered for effective safety management in the LPG refueling. At first, 4 typical cases were taken through surveying various accident cases, and then a prototype of the refueling task was presented. And each task was analysed by FTA and ETA. The results showed that overpressure occupies 64.64% of the major reasons for gas leakage, and its probability was approximately 6.62E-06. Among the tasks, gas leakage resulted from mal-assembly of lorry hoses had the highest rate, and human errors related to opening and closing valves of pipe lines were most frequent. Also, the effects of confirming tasks were analyzed quantitatively.
A prior fundamental study was executed using a constant volume chamber to improve the burning properties of lean pre-mixture by the injection of active radicals generated in the sub-chamber. In consequence, RI method shows remarkable progress in the aspects of burning velocity and combustible lean limit compared with SI method. In this study, the necessary additional works have been performed to be based on the former results. We changed parameters as the initial temperature and the initial pressure of mixture. And the effects of residual gas at issue in a real engine were investigated. As a result, the effects of initial temperature were significant, but on the other hand, those of initial pressure were slight. The correlation of passage hole number between overall passage hole area was grasped. And the more detailed analysis is required on residual gas.
Presently, it is now developing the optical remote gas sensor system which can measure combustible gases such as $CH_4$ and $C_2H_2$ generating by partial discharges inside the cable and connection parts to detect thermal deterioration of Oil-Filled (OF) power cable at the appropriate time. It is the most important parameter to select central wavelength of laser diode (LD) by analyzing the absorption bend of measuring gases in the infrared region. In this research, we proposed the optical spectrum analyzer to absorption band of $CH_4$ and $C_2H_2$ for the preliminary research of optical fiber gas detecting system.
Hydrogen gas has attracted considerable attention as a promising candidate for future energy resources because of its eco-friendly characteristics; however, its highly combustible characteristics should be thoroughly examined to preclude potential disasters. In this regard, a highly sensitive method for the selective detection of H2 is extremely important. To achieve excellent H2 selectivity, the utilization of a metal-organic framework (MOF) membrane can physically screen interfering gas molecules by restricting the size of kinetic diameters that can penetrate its nanopores. This paper summarizes the various endeavors of researchers to utilize the MOF molecular sieving layer for the development of highly selective H2 sensors. Further, the review affords useful insights into the development of highly reliable H2 sensors.
Hydrogen can be produced by gasification of biomass and other combustible fuels. Depending on oxydant agents, syngas or producer gas compositions become quite different. Since biomass has limited amount of hydrogen including moisture in it, the hydrogen concentration in the syngas is about 15% when air is supplied for oxidant agent. Experiments were conducted to investigate the channges in hydrogen concentrations in syngas with different oxidant agent conditions, fuel conditions, and external heat supply. Allothermal reaction resulted in higher concentrations of hydrogen with the supply of steam over air, reaching over 60%. Hydrogen is produced by water-gas and water-gas shift reactions. These reactions are endothermic and require enough heat. Autothermal reaction occurred in the downdraft gasifier used in the experiment did not provide enough heat in the reactions for hydrogen production. Steam seems a more desirable oxidant agent in producing the syngas with higher concentrations of hydrogen from biomass gasifications since nitrogen is included in syngas when air is used.
