Forging is a manufacturing process involving the shaping of metal using localized compressive forces and the process of deforming metal into a predetermined shape using certain tools and press according to the temperature. Forging provides stronger metal parts than that possible by casting or machining. Conventional clutch jaw parts have been developed through cold forging and precision machining; however, fabrication of integral clutch jaw parts for farm machinery has not been reported yet. These parts were developed by applying a complex forging technology combining cold and hot forging. The integrated forming technology proposed in this study will be useful for reducing the lead-time for manufacturing, improving the accuracy of products, and eliminating the welding process.

Aluminum alloys are gaining increased acceptance in the automotive and electronic industeries and cold & hot forging is the most efficient method of manufacturing such mass produced parts. This study has been investigated the microstructures and mechanical properties of A6061(Al-1.2Mg-0.8Si) alloy fabricated by cold & hot forging process for development of the future compressor block. The microstructure of cold & hot forginged specimen were composed of eutectic structure aluminum solid solution and $Mg_2Si$ precipitates. The tensile strength of as-solid solution treatment A6061 alloy revealed 291.7MPa. It was fabricated that a trial future compressor cylinder block using cold & hot forging.

In this study, a hot and cold forging process was investigated to produce a complex-shaped hub of dual clutch transmission with low material loss and high productivity. The process was designed by the commercial finite element (FE) analysis program, DEFORM-2D (hot forging) and 3D (cold forging). And, the material flow and ductile fracture characteristics were studied to check the surface crack initiation of the specimen. The simulation results indicated that the proposed process could manufacture the complex-shaped hub with no surface crack and high-efficiency compared to the conventional machining process. For verification the numerical results, the hub of the SCM440 was fabricated by the proposed process and the mechanical properties and microstructure evolution were studied. It was demonstrated that the suggested hot and cold forging process might be useful in producing the key components of the automobile industry as a high-efficiency and environmentally friendly process.
Recently, precision forging techniques are applied to manufacture spur gears. Compared to conventional machining, they produce parts of better mechanical properties and less residual stresses with a much higher production rate. In the present investigation a rigid-plastic three dimensional finite element method was applied to analyze hot forging and cold sizing of a spur gear by closed dies. The involute curve of a tooth profile was approximated by a circle close to the curve. Results of the analyses make it possible to predict local strengths of the gear die failure and an appropriate preform for cold sizing. It was found that the preform for cold sizing. It was found that the preform for the cold sizing is the most important because it determines whether the gears especially teeth can be successfully formed.

The rigid-plastic finite element analysis was performed for analysis of ofhot forging and cold sizing of a bevel gear. Two dimensional analysis was carried out to investigate the defect occurrence on vertical symmetric planes during hot forging and three dimensional analysis was to understand the filling behavior on horizontal planes during cold sizing. The involute curve of a tooth was approximated by a circle for convenience in the present analysis. In order to estimate the elastic deformation of the gear and dies during cold sizing, linear elastic finite element analysis was performed. Results of the analysis can be used to predict grain flows and strength distributions in the forged gear, and to design dies and an appropriate preform for the cold sizing.

Cold Forging has advantage in high accuracy and short working time. However large-skzed and complicated parts are difficult to process with cold forging. Thus large-sized and complicated parts have been processed with two pieces, or combind forging that is hot forging in addition to cold sizing. Recently, large-sized and complicated parts can be manufactured with cold forging alone by advanced cold forging technology using the long-stroke press. In this paper, cold forging technology of large-sized and complicated parts are investigated, including tripod slide housing for constant velocity joint and drive shaft for starter.

In this research, a hot and cold combined forging process for manufacturing net-shape one-way clutch bearing outer race of an automobile automatic transmission unit is developed. The process is composed of hot forging for manufacturing an optimized gear-like perform and precision cold forging for sizing the perform into final net-shape product. Finite element simulation techniques are applied to find the optimized process designs including blank and die shapes. The predictions and experiments are compared, revealing that they are in good agreement with each other. The dimensional test showed that the important dimensional requirements on gear tooth-like shape of the forged product were fulfilled.

The precision cold forging process for steering yoke of automobile has been analysed by using rigid-plastic finite element analysis code DEFORM-3D Also the experiment has been performed through the optimized process. Until now steering yoke has been largely manufactured by hot forging or welding of forged head and shaft parts because of technical difficulty. the study has shown successful results of the precision cold forging through the proper selection of the process.
The die wear is one of the main factors affecting product accuracy and die life in hot forging process. It is desired to analyze die wear by developing wear prediction method combined with FE-simulatin and experiment. Lots of researches have been done into the wear analysis of cold forging die, and the results of those researches were successful, but there have been little applications to hot forging die giving successful results. That is because hot forging process has many factors influencing die wear, and there was not accurate in-process data. In this research, change of die surface hardness by thermal softening during the lifetime was obtained by experiment, and hardness distribution of cross section was measured. This wear analysis was applied to hot forging die, and gave comparatively good results compared with actual wear profile.

This paper deals with automated computer-aided process planning by which designers can determine operation sequences even if they have little experience in the design of press working products. The computer-aided process planning in hot forging, deep drawing and blanking requires many kinds of technical and empirical skills based on investigation and collection of the knowledge of their processes. An approach to the CAPP system is based on the knowledge-based rules and the process knowledge base consisting of process planning rules is built. The methodology adopted to develop the system is elaborated in this paper. This system has been written in AutoLISP on the AutoCAD with a personal computer and provides powerful capabilities for process planning of hot forging, cold forging, deep drawing and blanking products.
