  • The purpose of this study was to describe the differences in three phenomenological research methods used to understand the experience of families of patients with cancer and so provide as guideline to novices first attempting qualitative research. The subjects were 3 family members - spouse, daughter, daughter-in-law -of cancer patients at S-hospital. Unstructured deep interviews were carried out and taped for further analyzed. Interviews were analyzed using three phenomenological methods ; Giorgi's, Colazzi's, and Van Kaam's. The results are as follows. : The experience of family the analyzed using Giorgi's method showed different characteristics according to the family members' role. According to Colaizzi's method, they experienced burden, a willingness to care, role conflict, thanks to family and significant others, and ambivalence about treatment. Using Van Kaam's methodology, two categories were identified ; change of family function and burden. Themes in change of family function were positive attitude(9), role conflict(6), negative attitude(5), active attitude(2), and passive attitude(2) ; Themes in burden were emotional burden, physical burden, and economic burden. The result from using Giorgi's method were centered or individual characteristics and these results constituteds situational structured description and a general structured description. From Colaizzi's method the focus was on the common experience of all fo the subjects. In Van Kaam's method, subthemes (13), themes(8), and categories(2) were identified. So researchers should choose the qualitative method according to their research goals and methodological characteristics.

  • Purpose: This study attempts to explore the subjective experience of frailty among elderly individuals in Korea. Methods: From June to August in 2014, 11 elderly persons who had experienced frailty in a community were interviewed. For data analysis, the method suggested by Colaizzi was applied as a phenomenological method. Results: According to the analysis, the study participants' frailty process was structured in seven categories: (a) 'natural phenomenon with ageing,' (b) 'life force comes to an end,' (c) 'the light in my heart turns off,' (d) 'unavoidable situation,' (e) 'continuous and connected vicious cycle,' (f) 'the limit of recovery energy already passes,' and (g) 'life is supported by someone's help.' Conclusion: The frailty experience in the participants is a natural process of aging, which cause vicious cycle acting with each other among physical, psychological, and social health. It is said that the cycle of frailty was started from weight loss and insufficient sleep, and boostered by pain. The participants from repetition of the vicious cycle become exhausted and pass the threshold of their recovery energy at some points. If they meet with sudden accidents such as falling, traffic accident and so on, they become to live a dependent life supported by someone's help in a moment. To prevent frailty and worsening conditions in Korean elderly individuals, it is recommended to provide a interventional programs using this study's results.

  • Purpose : This study was attempted to explore the paramedic student's experience on simulation education. Methods : Data were collected through in-depth interviews from 15 paramedic students. The study was analyzed by phenomenological method, specifically Colaizzi's method. From the protocol, significant statements were organized into formulated meanings. Results : The formulated meanings were identified 35 themes, 12 theme clusters, and 6 categories. The 6 categories include burden of demonstration, role experience as a paramedic, confidence in field treatment, sense of disjunction caused by difference from real situation, realization and learning by oneself, and sense of stability from hypothetical situation. Conclusion : This study suggested that, even though some negative perceptions were observed, simulation education will fit as a replacement for the field practice of paramedic's students given that more field-like practice environment and repetitive simulation education are present.

  • The purpose of this study is to apply flip learning to nursing students and to understand their teaching experience. That is, we analyze the meaning of experience by applying the phenomenological analysis method of Colaizzi, which is aimed to grasp the essence of each individual experience by studying the learning experiences of nursing students participating in the flip learning lesson. The analysis of Colaizzi's phenomenological analysis of the meaning of flip - learning lessons in nursing students resulted in seven themes and three central meanings. Based on this study, it is suggested that qualitative and quantitative research should be expanded to expand the flip learning method in the major subject of nursing science.

The interview took about one and a half hours to two and a half hours per session. The data collected by the Focus Group interviews were analyzed using Colaizzi's Phenomenological Research Method. Research has resulted in four categories and a set of 11 theme clusters. The essential structures include "water and oil", "greed for children's education", "to make matters worse" and "family strength following the resolution path getting stronger". • This study explored the psychological experiences of surviving family members of homicide victims. Nine family members of homicide victims, who could verbalize their experiences and agree to participate, were interviewed. The time between the interview and the homicide ranged from 6 months to 4 years, and all the homicide offenders were convicted prior to the study. The interview data were analyzed to identify meanings and themes using Colaizzi's method. Results showed that 472 meaningful phrases and sentences were extracted, which were subsequently organized into 48 formulated meanings, 24 clusters of themes, 16 emergent themes, and 6 categories. The six categories were related to the homicide victim, the participant, the family members, other people/the world, the offender/the offender's family, and realistic difficulties. For each category participants' experiences were described in detail. Finally, implications and limitations of this study were discussed.

  • This study was conducted to identify instructor's experience on simulation education. The subjects were nine instructors in simulation education of EMT students. Data were collected through documents and in-depth interview from participants. It was analyzed by phenomenological method, using Colaizzi's method. The results of this study were as a follows. From the protocol, significant statements were organized into formulated meanings. The formulated meanings were identified 28 themes, 9 theme clusters, and 4 categories. The 4 categories were as follows; discomfort of forming the learning environment; burden of instructor's role; difficulty from insufficient education condition; possibility of new education. This study suggested that improvement of simulation education can be accomplished by providing opportunities to learn the simulation technology, using the pre-programmed scenarios, having technical support from specialist or additional operator, and adjusting the current paramedic curriculum.
