Facial Emotion Recognition in Older Adults With Cognitive Complaints

  • Background and Purpose: Facial emotion recognition deficits impact the daily life, particularly of Alzheimer's disease patients. We aimed to assess these deficits in the following three groups: subjective cognitive decline (SCD), mild cognitive impairment (MCI), and mild Alzheimer's dementia (AD). Additionally, we explored the associations between facial emotion recognition and cognitive performance. Methods: We used the Korean version of the Florida Facial Affect Battery (K-FAB) in 72 SCD, 76 MCI, and 76 mild AD subjects. The comparison was conducted using the analysis of covariance (ANCOVA), with adjustments being made for age and sex. The Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE) was utilized to gauge the overall cognitive status, while the Seoul Neuropsychological Screening Battery (SNSB) was employed to evaluate the performance in the following five cognitive domains: attention, language, visuospatial abilities, memory, and frontal executive functions. Results: The ANCOVA results showed significant differences in K-FAB subtests 3, 4, and 5 (p=0.001, p=0.003, and p=0.004, respectively), especially for anger and fearful emotions. Recognition of 'anger' in the FAB subtest 5 declined from SCD to MCI to mild AD. Correlations were observed with age and education, and after controlling for these factors, MMSE and frontal executive function were associated with FAB tests, particularly in the FAB subtest 5 (r=0.507, p<0.001 and r=-0.288, p=0.026, respectively). Conclusions: Emotion recognition deficits worsened from SCD to MCI to mild AD, especially for negative emotions. Complex tasks, such as matching, selection, and naming, showed greater deficits, with a connection to cognitive impairment, especially frontal executive dysfunction.

  • It is simply not true that anyone who can speak English can teach it. Language teaching is both a science and an art; its methods are based on a theoretical foundation and implemented by techniques. However, at a time like the present, when the scientific justification for our methods seems to be uncertain, we should concern ourselves less with theory and more with developing techniques that work with our students. The success of language teaching must be evaluated by the effectiveness of the techniques used. The purpose of the present study is to suggest some useful techniques that the teacher can utilize in teaching English as a foreign language in the elementary school. The techniques suggested are based on the investigation of the characteristics peculiar to children. The investigation takes into account cognitive, affective, and linguistic factors affecting specific techniques. The goal of language teaching is communication and all techniques should move toward this end. The resourceful teacher will provide techniques which exact more and more from the students and less and less from the teacher.

A Longitudinal Analysis of Factors Affecting Language Development in Infants (영아의 언어발달 영향요인에 관한 종단 분석)

  • The purpose of this study is to identify factors that affect the language development of infants. For the analysis, data of three years from the first year (2008) to the third year (2010) of the 'Panel Study on Korean Children (PSKC)' were constructed and panel analysis was conducted. The subjects were 2,150 infants who participated in the questionnaire, and the language development of the infants was measured using the communication scores of the K-ASQ test provided by the Korean children's panel. In addition, the factors influencing the language development of infants derived from previous studies were introduced into the model. As a result of the analysis, it is shown that the fixed effect model with fixed individual error of the panel is suitable through the Hausman test. The higher the cognitive development level of the infant, the more positive parenting behavior of the infant, respectively. The conclusions and suggestions about the characteristics of the parents and the parents affecting language development were introduced.

  • Metonymy can be said to be the only language's meaning shifting technique that exists in the domain of a single human thought in order to obtain a transparent cognitive effect. The purpose of this study was to analyze the 'descriptive metonymy' of the advertising content language constructed by the cognitive principle and to find a way to use it in media language education for social and cultural interests and reflection of college students. The metonymy used in advertising media contrasts with the difficulty of the metaphorical interpretation of "opaque and distant" reasoning. Storyboards, mostly focused on human emotions and behaviors, used metonymy's 'transparent and easy meaning shifting technique'. I have found that I can expect the efficiency of media language education that contains the interest and sociocultural interest, self-reflection, and future imagination of college students. Now, there is less need to perform cognitive reasoning for advertisements with ambiguous metaphor techniques. Lastly, in order to produce successful advertising content, we expect to use the language technique of 'narrative metonymy' with warm feelings of humans, and acknowledge the lack of quantitative research and leave it as a task for the next research.

A Preliminary Study on the Development of a Developmental Test for Toddlers and Preschoolers (영유아용 (만 2세~5세) 발달검사 개발을 위한 예비연구)

  • This study aimed to develop a reliable and valid developmental test for toddlers and preschoolers. A trial form of the test with 230 items in 5 domains(cognitive, physical, language, social, and self-help) was constructed and administered to 200 children from 2 to 5-year-olds. Item analysis indicated that most items selected in cognitive, physical, and indicated domain were acceptable in terms of item response rate and item discrimination. However, some items in social and self-help domain did not show clear age trends in item response, but mostly were adequate in item discrimination. Based on item analysis, 112 items were selected for the final form : 24 items each for the cognitive, physical, and language domain; 20 items each for the social and self-help domain. Reliability indicated by internal consistency coefficients(KR-20) were high in all domains. Validity of the test was supported by inter-correlations among 5 domains(.61 to .93), and significant age differences in domain scores.

Trajectories of Child Peer Interaction and Their Predictors: Longitudinal Analysis Using Latent Growth Modeling (유아의 또래 상호작용의 발달궤적과 그 예측변인: 잠재성장모형을 이용한 종단분석)

  • Objective: The purpose of this study was to investigate trajectories of child peer interaction and to compare the causal effects of their predictors, including child individual variables (i.e., gender, language ability, and cognitive ability) and teacher variables (i.e., teacher efficacy and teacher-child interaction). Methods: The participants of this study were 263 children and their teachers from the forth to sixth waves of longitudinal data from the Korean Children and Youth Panel Survey by the Korea Institute of Child Care and Education. The data was analyzed using Pearson's correlation and latent growth modeling. Results and Conclusion: The findings of this study are as follows: First, there was a linear decrease in child negative peer interaction over the course of 3 years, and significant individual differences were found in the trajectories (intercept and slope). Second, the predictors had significant casual effects on the trajectories of child negative peer interaction. The trajectories of child negative peer interaction involving girls, higher cognitive ability, and greater teacher-child interaction showed lower degree of intercept and a quicker decrease. Finally, the implications of findings are discussed.

  • 본 논문은 한국어 온라인 리뷰 문서의 오피니언 분류(Opinion Classification)에 있어 그 핵심 키워드가 형용사 (Adjective) 범주라는 점을 고려하여, 한국어 형용사를 <문맥에 의존하지 않는 절대 극성>과, <문맥에 의존하여 극성이 바뀌는 상대극성>으로 대분류한 뒤 그 각각의 의미 극성을 하위 분류하는 작업을 수행하였다. 기존의 연구에서 특징적인 오피니언 어휘 수십개에 의존하여 자동 분류를 시도하고자 하였던 문제점을 극복하기 위해서는 한국어 형용사 전체 범주에 대한 체계적인 극성 분류가 이루어져야 할 필요가 있으며, 여기서 특히 상세히 주목받지 못했던 상대 극성 어휘에 대한 본격적인 의미 분류가 요구된다. 본 연구에서 제시하는 형용사의 극성 분류는 기존의 이론 언어학적 형용사 의미 분류와 달리 온라인 오피니언 문서에서 도메인에 따라 나타나는 특징적 의미 유형을 결정하고, 이를 기준으로 온라인 오피니언 문서의 극성 판별에 효과적으로 적용할 수 있는 사전을 구축하였다는 점에서 의의를 가진다.

Heterogeneous Computation on Mobile Processor for Real-time Signal Processing and Visualization of Optical Coherence Tomography Images

  • We have developed a high-performance signal-processing and image-rendering heterogeneous computation system for optical coherence tomography (OCT) on mobile processor. In this paper, we reveal it by demonstrating real-time OCT image processing using a Snapdragon 800 mobile processor, with the introduction of a heterogeneous image visualization architecture (HIVA) to accelerate the signal-processing and image-visualization procedures. HIVA has been designed to maximize the computational performances of a mobile processor by using a native language compiler, which targets mobile processor, to directly access mobile-processor computing resources and the open computing language (OpenCL) for heterogeneous computation. The developed mobile image processing platform requires only 25 ms to produce an OCT image from $512{\times}1024$ OCT data. This is 617 times faster than the naïve approach without HIVA, which requires more than 15 s. The developed platform can produce 40 OCT images per second, to facilitate real-time mobile OCT image visualization. We believe this study would facilitate the development of portable diagnostic image visualization with medical imaging modality, which requires computationally expensive procedures, using a mobile processor.

  • 본 연구는 한국어 화장품 리뷰 코퍼스의 자질기반 감성 분석을 위하여, 이 도메인에서 실현되는 중요한 다단어 표현(MWE)의 유한상태 그래프 사전과 문법을 구축하는 방법론을 제시하고, 실제 구축된 사전과 문법의 성능을 평가하는 것을 목표로 한다. 본 연구에서는 자연어처리(NLP)에서 중요한 화두로 논의되어 온 MWE의 어휘-통사적 특징을 부분문법 그래프(LGG)로 형식화하였다. 화장품 리뷰 코퍼스에 DECO 한국어 전자사전을 적용하여 어휘 빈도 통계를 획득하고 이에 대한 언어학적 분석을 통해 극성 MWE(Polarity-MWE)와 화제 MWE(Topic MWE)의 전체 네 가지 하위 범주를 분류하였다. 또한 각 모듈간의 상호관계에 대한 어휘-통사적 속성을 반복적으로 적용하는 이중 증식(double-propagation)을 통해 자원을 확장하였다. 이 과정을 통해 구축된 대용량 MWE 유한그래프 사전 DECO-MWE의 성능을 테스트한 결과 각각 0.844(Pol-MWE), 0.742(Top-MWE)의 조화평균을 보였다. 이를 통해 본 연구에서 제안하는 MWE 언어자원 구축 방법론이 다양한 도메인에서 활용될 수 있고 향후 자질기반 감성 분석에 중요한 자원이 될 것임을 확인하였다.

Plasmid-DNAgram : Anagram Solving by Molecular Computing Based on GFP-Expressing Plasmid DNA (Plasmid-DNAgram : 녹색형광단백질 발현 Plasmid DNA 기반 분자컴퓨팅에 의한 언어 퍼즐 문제 해결)

  • 인간 게놈 프로젝트가 완료됨에 다라 생체서열과 언어 사이의 대응 관계가 부각되고 있다. 본고에서는 Lewis Carroll의 언어 유희 사례를 컴퓨터생물학의 측면에서 재조명하고, Carroll이 제시한 문제 중에서 간단한 anagram 문제의 해결을 다루고자 한다. 우선 DNA 컴퓨팅의 방법론을 적용한 DNAgram의 개념을 확장하여 plasmid-DNAgram의 개념을 새롭게 도입하였다. 이 개념을 형광단백질에 대한 DNAgram의 개념을 확장하여 plasmid-DNAgram의 개념을 새롭게 도입하였다. 이 개념을 형광단백질에 대한 FRET(fluorescent resonance energy transfer)분석기법의 응용 사례인 cameleon 형광단백질에 대한 FRET 분석기법에 적용함으로써 anagram 문제의 어휘론적, 구문론적, 의미론적, 화용론적 측면에 대응하는 바이오분자 컴퓨팅 방법론을 제안하였다.
