  • This paper deals with the design process for an outer-rotor-type surface-mounted permanent magnet synchronous motor (SPMSM) used in continuous variable valve timing (CVVT) systems in automobiles with internal combustion engines. When the same size, outer-rotor-type SPMSMs generate larger torque and more stable than inner-rotor-type SPMSMs. For the initial design, space harmonic analysis (SHA) is used. In order to minimize the cogging torque, an optimization was conducted using Response Surface Methodology (RSM). At the end of the paper, Finite Element Analysis (FEA) is performed to verify the performance of the optimum model.

  • This paper presents a unique method for simulating permanent magnet motors without time-consuming numerical methods used in the conventional magnetic circuit method. The conventional method gives us average values like torque and power over specified periods of time, but it is usually very difficult and time-consuming to obtain instantaneous characteristics like cogging torques and torque ripples. The convolution operations method we present, however, considers relative angle variations of stator magnetic circuits and rotor magnetic circuits. As a result, it makes uses of instantaneous values possible. The authors compare the new method with the coventional method and verify that calculating cogging torque values and back-emf values is possible with the proposed new convolution method.

  • The goal of this study is to examine the effect of the number of slots on the noise from BLDC motors. To this end, the number of poles was fixed to 4 and the number of the slots was set to 6 or 24 before noise was measured. Motors having different numbers of slots showed clear differences in noise. Cogging torque, torque ripple and normal local force were interpreted, analyzed and compared to determine the reason for the differences. To determine the cause of the noise, cogging torque, torque ripple and normal local force were calculated, which are representative noise sources of BLDC motors, and FFT was performed to analyze their frequency components(harmonics). The results show that torque ripple and normal local force were the dominant factors in the noise difference between the 6-slot and 24-pole motors. As the number of the slots increased, the number of harmonics decreased and their amplitude of harmonic were reduced, which was attributed as the reason for the noise differences.

  • This paper is development of single-phase brushless DC motor with outer rotor for ventilation fan. Cogging torque causes the noise vibration to greatest impact on ventilation fan. Asymmetric notches are applied to tapered-teeth for cogging torque reduction of single-phase brushless DC motor. Initial model is notchless and proposed model is applied 2 asymmetric notches. The proposed method is proved motor characteristic through finite element analysis(FEA). Also, experimental results verify that the proposed model considerably reduces cogging torque and have the good sound quality in ventilation system.

  • BLDC 전동기의 코깅토크는 영구자석과 철심의 상호작용에 의해 발생하고 소음과 진동을 발생시키는 요인이다. 제조 과정에서 조립 공차로 인해 영구자석이 회전자 철심 면에 제대로 붙지 않을 경우 BLDC 전동기의 전자기적 구조가 변할 수 있다. 본 논문에서는 조립 공차로 인해 자석이 회전자 표면과 분리되었을 때 코깅토크에 미치는 영향에 대해 연구했다. 핵심적인 설계 요소들인 회전자와 자석 간 분리, 분리를 가진 자석 수, 이웃한 자석들 간의 여러 배치형태를 고려했다. 코깅토크 해석을 위해 유한요소법을 사용하였고, 소음진동을 발생시키지 않는 조립 공차를 제안했다. 제안된 조립 공차로 제작된 BLDC 전동기의 코깅토크는 감소되었고 소음진동 또한 줄어들 것이라고 판단된다.

  • A novel cogging torque reduction algorithm is presented for 2-pole permanent magnet DC motor. While the shape of the permanent magnet is changed in the conventional method, the pole shape of the magnetizing yoke is optimized in the presented algorithm. In order to parameterize the shape of the yoke, and the distribution of the residual magnetization of the permanent magnet, the Bezier spline is used. The shape of the magnetizing yoke is optimized using the design sensitivity analysis incorporated with the finite element method and Bezier spline.

  • Air gap flux density is obtained strictly from air gap permeance and MMF distribution using the design parameter of BLDCM when the stator slot is considered. Then the theoretical equations representing the cogging torque and BEMF are proposed. The effect of skew is described analytically, and skew effect on air gap permeance and MMF is studied. Consequently we verified analytically that skew of slots and magnets influenced on the reduction of the cogging torque and BEMF ripple, and the shape of BEMF.

  • Cogging torque is often a principal source of vibration, noise and difficulty of control in permanent-magnet brushless DC motors. Cogging torque can be minimized by sinusoidal air-gap flux density waveform because it is produced by the interaction of the rotor magnetic flux and angular variation in the stator magnetic reluctance. Therefore, this paper will present a design method of magnetization system of bonded isotropic neodynium-iron-boron(Nd-Fe-B) magnets in ring type with sinusoidal air-gap flux density distribution and low manufacturing cost. An analytical technique of magnetization makes use of two-dimensional finite element method(2D FEM) and Preisach model that expresses the hysteresis phenomenon of magnetic materials in order for accurate calculation.

  • This paper suggests the slot wedge shape for reducing the cogging torque of a gearless type direct-drive permanent magnet synchronous generator with open slot shape. To achieve this, we are designed the appropriate specifications of the permanent magnet synchronous generator by selected the appropriate material of slot wedge and various slot wedge shapes. The PMSG models were analyzed by finite element method. Finally, we have suggested appropriate material of slot wedges and its shape which has benefit to further reducing cogging torque and preventing decreasing of the generating power.

  • This paper deals with the magnetic field analysis and compution of cogging torque using an analytical method in high speed brushless motor/generator. The magnetic field is analyzed by solving space harmonics field analysis due to magnetizing distribution and the cogging torque is analyzed by combining field analysis with relative permeance.
