  • Skin frictional drag reduction efficiency of "stiff" compliant coating was investigated in a wind tunnel experiment. Flat plate compliant coating inserts were installed in a wind tunnel and the measurements of skin frictional drag and velocity field were carried out. The compliant coatings with varying viscoelastic properties had been prepared using different composition. In order to optimize the coating thickness, the most important design parameter, the dynamic viscoelastic properties had been determined experimentally. The aging of the materials (variation of their properties) during half a year was documented as well. A design procedure proposed by Kulik et al. (2008) was applied to get an optimal value for the coating thickness. Along with the drag measurement using the strain balance, velocity and pressure were measured for different coatings. The compliant coatings with the thickness h = 7mm achieved 4~5% drag reduction within a velocity range 30~40 m/s. The drag reduction mechanism of the attenuation of turbulence velocity fluctuations due to the compliant coating was demonstrated. It is envisioned that larger drag reduction effect is obtainable at higher flow velocities for high speed trains and subsonic aircrafts.

  • The cementless fixation of bone ingrowth by porous coatings on artificial hip joint prostheses are replacing polymethylmethacrylate(PMMA) bone cement fixations. However, the major interests in the field of porous metal coating are environmental corrosivity accelerated by metal ion release, deterioration in the mechanical property of the coating, and the mechanical failure of the coatings as well as the substrate. Therefore, the selection of right materials for coatings and the development of porous coating techniques must be accomplished. Because of the existing problems in Ti and Ti alloys which are used extensively, this study is focused on the plasma spraying technique for coating on super stainless steel substrate. In order to determine the optimum conditions which satisfy the requirement for the porous coatings, under the plasma spraying, we selected the experimental parameters which extensively influenced on the characteristics of the coating through the pre-examination. Spray distance has been selected among 120, 160, and 200mm and primary gas flow rate among 70, 100, and 130 SCFH. Current and secondary gas($H_2$) flow rate was fixed at 400A, and 15 SCFH respectively. To understand the characteristics of the coatings, surface morphology, cross-sectional micro-structure, surface roughness, residual stress, and corrosion resistance were elucidated and the best conditions for the bone ingrowth improvement on artificial hip joint prostheses were found.

  • In this paper, a computational and experimental analysis about the flow behavior of thin polymer film in the spin coating process for stable cover layer coating of a blu-ray disc is described. The blu-ray disc, a next-generation optical disc format over 25GB, consists of a 1.1mm thick substrate and a 0.1mm tick cover layer. Generally, cover layer on the blu-ray disc is made by the polymer spin coating process. However, it is hard to secure sufficient coating uniformity around the rim on the cover layer. In order to get the uniform thickness deviation and to minimize the bead around the rim, the edge of the disc substrate can be modified into various shapes around the rim on the disc and analyzed with various parameters, such as surface tension, viscosity, and rotation speed, etc. The optimal shape of the rim was tried to get by 3 dimensional computer simulation of the polymer expulsion process.

  • The present research is an experimental study of subcooled flow boiling behavior using flat, microporousenhanced square heater surfaces in pure FC-72. Two $1-cm^{2}$ copper surfaces, one highly polished (plain) and one microporous coated, were flush-mounted into a 12.7 mm square, horizontal flow channel. Testing was performed for fluid velocities ranging from 0.5 to 4 m/s (Reynolds numbers from 18,700 to 174,500) and pure subcooling levels from 4 to 20 K. Results showed both surfaces' nucleate flow boiling curves collapsed to one line showing insensitivity to fluid velocity and subcooling. The log-log slope of the microporous surface nucleate boiling curves was lower than the plain surface due to the conductive thermal resistance of the microporous coating layer. Both, increased fluid velocity and subcooling, increase the CHF values for both surfaces, however, the already enhanced boiling characteristics of the microporous coating appear dominant and require higher fluid velocities to provide additional enhancement of CHF to the microporous surface.

  • In the present study, multi-layered Si DLC (Silicon Diamond-Like Carbon) coatings with HMDSO (Hexamethyldisiloxane) buffer layers are applied on SKD 11 substrates by PECVD (Plasma Enhanced Chemical Vapor Deposition) with different HMDSO gas flow rates, while the gas flow rate of $C_2H_2$ is fixed to enhance the electric resistivity of forming dies for electrically assisted forming. The HMDSO buffer layer is introduced to increase adhesion between the base metal and Si-DLC layers. The result of evaluation of electric resistivity and adhesion strength shows that the properties are affected by the flow rate of HMDSO, while the flow rate of 80 sccm results in the coating with the highest electric resistivity and adhesion strength among the selected flow rates.

  • In-mold coating is a reactive fluid designed to improve the surface quality of injection molded thermoplastic substrate in functional and cosmetic properties. In this study, a mixing head for in-mold coating was designed, and mixing characteristics of two-component polyurethane flowing through runner were investigated based on flow simulations. In order to achieve uniform mixing of two components injected through straight mixing head, an impingement aftermixer was used in runner design. Semi-circular cross-section was better than circular one for runners for uniform mixing. With increasing runner length and flow rate, mixing became more uniform. In addition, the degree of mixing was more improved with decreasing viscosity of isocyanate.

  • Sole-binder formulation has been recently introduced to solve the problems of coating process and printability caused by use of natural polymer However, the decrease of natural polymer application causes another problem in paper coating. Therefore, synthetic thickener is used to get similar effect to natural polymer usage. In this study. low shear viscosity, dewatering of coating colors were measured to evaluate the performance of the alkali sensitive water retention and rheology modifiers. The effects of alkali sensitive thickener on the physical properties of coated paper and printability were also investigated. The gloss and printability of coated paper containing the synthetic flow modifier were similar or superior to those of CMC containing coated paper. This modifier was also effective to improve the problems caused by the use of starch. The results indicated that the flow modifier synthesized with alkali sensitive thickener can reduce the problems of natural polymer and could be a good substitute f3r a natural polymer.

  • Experiments on evaporative spray cooling on the square plate heaters with plain or micro-porous coated surfaces were performed in this study. Micro-porous coated surfaces were made by using DOM [Diamond particle, Omegabond 101, Methyl-Ethyl-Keton] method. In case of purely air-jet cooling, the micro-porous coating doesn't affect the cooling capacity. In spray cooling three different flow patterns (complete wetting, evaporative wetting, dryout) are observed on both plain and micro-porous coated surfaces. The effects of various operating conditions, such as water flow rate, particle size, and coating thickness were investigated on the micro-porous coated surfaces. It is found that the level of surface wetting is an important factor to determine the performance of spray cooling. It depends on the balance between absorbed liquid amount by capillary force over porosity and the evaporative amount. The micro-porous coated surface has largest cooling capacity, especially in the evaporative wetting zone. It is found that the effects of liquid flow rate and coating thickness are significant in evaporative wetting zone, but are not in complete wetting and dryout zones.

  • The cold spray process is an emerging technology that utilizes high velocity metallic particles for surface coating. Metallic powder particles are injected into a converging-diverging de Laval nozzle and accelerated to a high velocity by a supersonic gas flow. The cold spray process normally uses a circular nozzle that has a rather narrow spraying range. To overcome this fault, a slit nozzle was considered in this study. The slit nozzle is anticipated to reduce the coating process time because it has a wider coating width than the circular nozzle. However, the slit nozzle can reduce the coating efficiency because it does not allow as much gas and particle velocity as the circular nozzle. To improve the coating efficiency of a slit nozzle, the shape of the slit nozzle was modified. And the results of gas flow and particle behaviour according to the nozzlers shape were compared by the a numerical analysis. As a results, as Expansion Ratio(ER) of 7.5 was found to be the most optimal condition for enhancing the spraying efficiency when the ER was changed by the variation of nozzle neck and exit size.
