  • Effects of top coat morphology and thickness on thermal fatigue behavior of thermal barrier coatings (TBC) were investigated in this study. Thermal fatigue tests were conducted on three coating specimens with different top coat morphology and thickness, and then the test data were compared via microstructures, cycles to failure, and fracture surfaces. In the air plasma spray specimens (APS1, APS2), top coat were 200 and $300{\mu}m$ respectively. The thickness of top coat was about $700{\mu}m$ in the perpendicular cracked specimen (PCS). Under thermal fatigue condition at $1,100^{\circ}C$, the cycles to top coat failure of APS1, APS2, and PCS were 350, 560 and 480 cycles, respectively. The cracks were initiated at the interface of top coat and thermally grown oxide (TGO) and propagated into TGO or top coat as the number of thermal fatigue cycles increased. For the PCS specimen, additive cracks were initiated and propagated at the starting points of perpendicular cracks in the top coat. Also, the thickness of TGO and the decrease of aluminium concentration in bond coat do not affect the cycles to failure.

  • Structure and differentiation mechanism of the seed coat of Panax ginseng are studied with light and electron microscopes to clarify the developmental processes of seed coat and the structural changes during the differentiation of the seed. The seed coat of ginseng is differentiated from the inner cell layers of ovary wall, which can be compared with the seed coat differentiated from integument(s) in other plants. The single integument is differentiated into endothelium, which is degenerated to one layer of 4${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ in thickness, composed of remants of cell wall components in fully ripened seed. The ripened seed coat is composed of three layers; fringe layer, inner layer and palisade layer, and all of the them are crossed at right angles with one another. This may be the cause of protection of the kernel from other mechanical injuries. The thickness of fully ripened seed coat is about 300~600 ${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$, and arrangements of sclereids are irregular. However, the raphe region of seed coat is thin about 200 ${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ in thickness and sclereids in that region are arranged regularly. This is the important cause for the cleavage of the seed coat during post-maturation process. The vascular bundles on the raphe are still remaining after sarcocarps are removed, and one of the branches of vascular bundles entered into the seed coat through the hilum and extended to chalazal region. During post-maturation process, the supply of water being necessary for growth of embryo may be accompolished by the vascular bundles entered into the seed coat through the opened hilum.

  • In car refinishing, the paint film characteristics of clear coat play an important role in appearance quality. Thus, Primarily in this research, the variance of brightness with the change of the thickness of paint film is investigated. Besides, as changing the thickness of paint film, the correlation between surface leveling(which is one of appearance characteristics) is investigated in this research. Throughout this investigation, we come to know that the increase of clear coat paint film thickness leads the improvement of appearance characteristics within specific range of thickness. Furthermore, the fact that too thick paint film does not increase the brightness or appearance characteristic any more is known. The optimum thickness of clear coat film for the best and appearance characteristics is derived from this research and more efficient way of determining optimum thickness of paint film is found. Particularly, haze value and waviness have more influence on vividness than brightness. Throughout all experiments, the appearance characteristics are much better at painted horizontally than vertically. These results are derived due to the facts that to obtain the same paint film thickness at painted vertically with painted horizontally is difficult and the way of vertical painting is different from horizontal painting. Therefore, the improvement of vertical painting and horizontal painting are required.

  • The plasma sprayed Cr$_{2}$C$_{2}$-NiCr coatings are widely used as wear-resistant and corrosion-resistant materials. The mechanical properties of the plasma sprayed Cr$_{2}$C$_{2}$-NiCr coatings were examined in this study. The distribution of the residual stress with the coating thickness was also examined by X-ray diffraction method. The pore in the coatings could be classified into two types ; one is the intrinsic pore originated from the spraying powder, the other is the extrinsic pore formed during spraying. During the tensile adhesion test, the fracture occurred at the interface of top coat and substrate or top coat and bond coat depending on the existence of bond coat. It was found that the compressive residual stress near the interface decreased with the increase of the top coat thickness. The tensile adhesion strength of the coating without bond coat was higher than that with bond coat, because the coating with bond coat has higher horizontal crack density near the interface between bond coat and top coat.

  • An experimental study was conducted to develop an understanding of failure of ceramic coating when subjected to a thermal cycling. Number of cycles to failure were decreased as the coating thickness and the oxide of bond coat were increased. Using the finite element method, an analysis of stress distribution in ceramic coatings was performed. Radial compressive stress was increased in the top/bond coat interface with increasing coating thickness and oxide of bond coat.

  • Mucin coat is deposited on the embryos during passage through the oviduct in rabbit. When in vitro cultured blastocysts were transferred to the recipients, the lack of mucin coat might account in part for failure of pregnancy after transfer. The present study were carried out to investigate whether deposition of mucin coat were induced when in vitro cultured blastocysts were transferred to recipients. At 19 ~20 hours post-coitus one-cell embryos were collected by flushing oviducts. These embryos cultured for 72 hours were reached to blastocyst stage. And these blastocysts were transferred to the oviduct of asynchronized (one day later than the donors) and synchronized recipient. To confirm deposition of the mucin coat, blastocysts transferred to the oviduct were recovered at 24 and 48 hours after the transfer. Fifty eight percent of blastocysts recovered from uterus of asynchronous recipient at 24 hours after transfer and 92.9% of blastocysts recovered from uterus of synchronous recipient were 0~10 ㎛ of mucin coat thickness. And 11.8% of blastocysts of asynchronized recipients and 7.1% of blastocysts from asynchronized recipients were in 11~20 ㎛ of mucin coat thickness. When blastocysts were recovered from uterus at 48 hours after transfer, 87.0% of blastocysts from asynchronized recipients and 5.9% of blastocyst from synchronized recipients were in 0~10 ㎛ of mucin coat thickness. And 76.5% of blastocysts of synchronized recipients and 4.4% of blastocysts from asynchronized recipients were in 11~20 ㎛ of mucin coat thickness. From these results it is speculated that the low implantation rate of in vitro cultured rabbit blastocysts transferred to oviduct of recipient was caused by high degeneration of the embryo after transfer and inappropriate deposition of mucin coat.

  • Perilla (Perilla frutescens var.frutescens) is an annual plant of the Lamiaceae family, mainly grown for obtaining oil by press extraction after roasting the seeds. Oil yield is one of its important traits, but evaluating this yield is time-consuming, requires many seeds, and is hard to adjust to pedigrees in a breeding field. The objective of this study was to develop a method for selecting high-oil-yield lines in a breeding population without oil extraction. Twenty-three perilla cultivars were used for evaluating the oil yield and seed traits such as seed hardness, seed coat thickness, seed coat proportion and crude fat. After evaluation of the seed traits of 23 perilla cultivars, the ranges of oil yields, seed hardness, seed coat thickness, seed coat proportion, 100-seed weight, and crude fat were 24.68-38.75%, 157-1166 gf, $24-399{\mu}m$, 15.4-41.5%, 2.79-6.69 g, and 33.0-47.8%, respectively. In an analysis of correlation coefficients, the oil yield negatively correlated with seed length, seed width, the proportion of seed coat, seed hardness, and 1000-seed weight, but positively correlated with crude fat content. It was observed that as the seed coat proportion increased, the seed coat thickness, hardness, and 1000-seed weight also increased. Multiple linear regression (MLR) was employed to find major variables affecting the oil yield. Among the variables, traits crude fat content and seed coat proportion were assumed to be indirect parameters for estimating the potential oil yield, with respect to a significant positive correlation with the observed oil yield ($R^2=0.791$). Using these two parameters, an equation was derived to predict the oil yield. The results of this study show that various seed traits in 23 perilla cultivars positively or negatively correlated with the oil yield. In particular, crude fat and the seed coat proportion can be used for predicting the oil yield with the newly developed equation, and this approach will improve the efficiency of selecting prominent lines for the oil yield.

  • Ships may collide with reefs or other objects during operation, when arriving or departing ports. The hull plate may be damaged due to the contact with other ships. The total number of domestic powered fishing vessels has decreased, but that of FRP fishing vessels has increased by 0.7% and the ratio of FRP fishing vessels to the total fishing vessels increased to 96%. Recently, fishing vessels has been used as fishing boats for income of non-fishermen as well as fishermen. Therefore, safety management for repair and maintenance is necessary. The penetration of moisture and moisture in the composite material such as FRP may deteriorate the mechanical properties and the salt (NaCl) component of the damaged portion may cause a relatively high deterioration in material strength. The gel coat painting is the final stage of repairs ans maintenance of FRP fishing vessels. The thickness criteria in the domestic and foreign gel coat is 0.3~0.762 mm. The joint specimens, which was immersed in seawater for 120 days, were compared with those without seawater immersion. As a result, the tensile strength was 83 ~ 121.8% and the flexural strength was 83 ~ 113% compared with the specimens without seawater immersion. According to the previous study the tensile strength decreased by more than 29% and the flexural strength decreased by more than 50% when the composite material was immersed in seawater for 1,083 hours without coating. As a result, it was found that the gel coat with 0.5 mm thickness is very effective in preventing the strength decrease of the composite material.
