  • One of the main function of Ieodo Ocean Research Station is to service the information about the weather and fishing grounds condition which are collected through calibrating convection flow and ocean current around the station. However, due to the influence of the station's structure below sea level, it is difficult to obtain the exact flow data. Therefore, it is required to research on the effect of the structure and the method to evaluate and revise the observed data. In this paper, as a basic study, it deals with the algorithm that simulate the interaction between ocean current and the station structure, followed by discussions about the way to applicate the algorithm. Through 3-dimensional computational fluid dynamics analyses (using Navier-Stokes equations with K-turbulence model), the influence of the station and submerged rocks are quantitatively evaluated, and we would suggest methods how to obtain accurate flow information from the measured rough data.

  • In order to reduce the risk of death from hypothermia for the fishing vessel's crew at sea, this paper suggests that the criteria of equipment of fishing vessels should be revised for fishing vessels engaged in coastal and inshore fisheries to be equipped with the immersion suit. The criteria of equipment of fishing vessels for immersion suits was amended to reflect the sinking of No.501 Oryongho but it was only reflected in ocean fisheries at Bering sea and Antarctic ocean that immersion suits must be provided with the same number of the total number of crew on board. Therefore, this paper analyses the relationship between maritime accident of fishing vessels and weather condition based on sea water temperature to find out the risk of hypothermia and also compares the international conventions(SFV Protocol 1993, Cape Town Agreement 2012, STCW-F 1995 and SOLAS 1974) and domestic law concerning criteria of equipment of fishing vessels. As a result, fishing vessels engaged in coastal and inshore fisheries are exposed to the risk of hypothermia when they are in distress and the criteria of equipment of fishing vessels should be amended to provide the immersion suits in accordance with the revision trend of international conventions.

  • In this study, characteristics of swell-like high waves in the East Sea were analyzed using observed wave data and predicted meteorological data from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA). And, the wave prediction system using the data from the NOAA has been established. Furthermore, the applicability of the system has been verified by comparing the predicted results with the corresponding observed data. For some case, there were two times of wave height increase and the second increase occurred in a calm weather condition on the coast which might cause casualties. The direction of wave energy propagation was estimated from observed wave data in February, 2008. Through comparison between the direction of wave energy propagation and the meteorological data, it turns out that the second increase of waves is originated from the seas between Russia and Japan which is far from the East Sea.

  • This study is concerned with the sea breeze criterion and climatological characteristics of the short-time sea breeze in the Gangneung coastal area. The sea breeze criteria in this area are listed here. First, the fact of the sea breeze blowing was considered to be a change of wind direction from land to sea and vice versa without terrain effect like easterly wind. Second, the sea breeze of which continuous time 1-hour or 2-hour was selected. Then the climatological characteristics of the short-time sea breeze were analyzed using the meterological data from a 10-year(1988${\sim}$1997) period. The climatological characteristics which were analyzed for the short-time sea breeze consist of the frequency, onset time, wind direction speed and temperature. Finally, this study will be helpful in meteorological application through the climatological characteristics of sea breeze along the east coast as well as Gangneung Airport.

  • On the relationship between the red tide occurrence and the oceanographic factors in the middle coastal area in the South Sea of Korea, the favorable oceanographic conditions for the red tide formation are considered as follows; the calm weather increases sea water temperature in summer and early-fall which the red tide occurs frequently, and the heavy precipitation brings some riverine water to ween: low salinity, high suspended solid, low phosphorus and high nitrogen, respectively. We decided the potential areas in the coastal zones vulnerable to the red tide occurrence based on the limited factors controlling the growth of phytoplankton. By using GIS through the overlap for three subject figures (phosphorus, nitrogen and suspended solids), it was founded that the potential areas are the Yeosu∼Dolsan coast, the Gamak bay, the Namhae coast, the Narodo coast, the Goheung and Deukryang bay. This result has very well coincided to the results of the satellite and in-situ data.

  • Topographic changes in the foredune in Sohwang-ri, Boryeong, Chungnam Province was analyzed over the last two years. Seven cross-sections and one permanent plot ($20m{\times}50m$) were periodically studied based on erosion and deposition measurement, in addition to vegetation monitoring and measurement of wind using an automatic weather station. The sand dunes usually grew from late winter to spring and the growth occurred in a period of strong northwesterly winds. From March to April, heavy sedimentation was observed on the front section of the foredune and sand piled up to ca. 30cm to the ca. 25m landward from the high tide line. It is likely that increased wind force and growth of vegetation played a major role in transportation and sedimentation of sand. Meanwhile, the lower part of the sand dunes was eroded when typhoon and spring tide caused a rise in sea level. The transition zone of beach and dune was usually affected by sea water but some frontal slopes were entirely influenced, resulting in dune scarps. The eroded scarps were naturally restored to their original state as time passed.

  • Collision accidents happen frequently. The majority of ships involved in collisions in the coastal areas of Korea are middle and small size ships. The proportion of collision accidents is only 9% of all types of marine accidents; however, the number of casualties resulting from collisions is 34.4% of all human life damages. Generally, as reported by the people involved in these collisions, the navigation lights of the opponent ships were poor and invisible when the accident happened even though the weather and visibility were good. Furthermore, there are many insistences for poor navigation light conditions of the opponent ship in the bay or harbor. Therefore, it is necessary to analyze the present conditions and safety of navigation lights. Therefore, in this study, we examined the rules and books of navigation lights and compared it to that of other transportation systems, such as aircraft, trains, and road vehicles. Furthermore, we analyzed the current marine traf ic circumstances and ship collision accidents that happened in the past 5 years. Additionally, a questionnaire was prepared to gather the opinion of ship experts and secure the objectivity for improvement methods of navigation lights. Finally, methods to improve the navigation lights on ships were devised.

  • The high wind wave alert has a great impact on ships and maritime service workers navigating in the vicinity of Korea. This study aims to evaluate the appropriateness of the high wind wave alert by comparing and analyzing the observation data of major marine meteorological buoys with the high wind wave alerts in the coastal sea and offshore of the West Sea, South Sea, and the East Sea announced by the Korea Meteorological Administration for the past 11 years(2010-2020). As a result of comparing the daily, monthly, and annual statistics of the high wind wave alert and marine meteorological buoy observation data for each sea area by annual, monthly, and seasonal average, the accuracy of high wind wave alerts was very low across the entire sea area. In particular, it was analyzed that the accuracy in the coastal sea of the South Sea and Jejudo was the lowest in winter. It was confirmed that the accuracy of marine weather forecasts and alerts needs to be improved when considering the effects of the high wind wave alerts on fishing vessels, passenger ships operations and tourism, and marine leisure activities.

  • It has been more than 30 years since the term climate change began to become popular, but recently, rapid accelerated phenomena are appearing in the form of extreme weather all over the world. It is showing a distinctly different phenomenon from previous years, with heavy rain falling in the Death Valley desert in the U.S., and temperatures rising more than 40 degrees in Europe. In the Korean Peninsula, super typhoons with very strong wind speeds have become a major disaster risk for many years, and the supply of more energy due to the rise in sea temperature increases the possibility of super typhoons, requiring a proactive response. Unlike the method using numerical analysis, this study analyzed past typhoon data to study changes in typhoon characteristics for coastal disaster prevention. Existing studies have targeted all typhoons that have occurred, but in this study, a specific area was set up in the southern ocean of the Korean Peninsula and then a study was conducted. The subjects of the study were typhoons that occurred over the past 40 years from 1980 to the present, and it was confirmed that the maximum wind speed of typhoons affecting the Korean Peninsula increased slightly. The wind speed of typhoons in the specific area is about 80% of the maximum wind speed in their lifetime, and a correlation with ENSO could not be confirmed.

  • Recently, there are increasing need to make a synthetic assessment about oceanic data which is collected over the various scientific field, in addition to just gathering oceanic data. In this study, we made a basic map using satellite image, aerial photo, multi-beam data, geological stratum data etc. And as well we are producing comprehensive SVT(Scientific Visualization Toolkit) which can visualize various kinds of oceanic data. These oceanic data include both survey data such as tidal height, tide, current, wave, water temperature, salinity, oceanic weather data and numeric modelling results such as ocean hydrodynamic model, wave model, erosion/sediment model, thermal discharged coastal water model, ocean water quality model. In this process, we introduce GIS(Geographic Information System) concepts to reflect time and spatial characteristics of oceanic data.
