  • This study investigated and compared sediment properties and macrobenthic community structures within heated effluent plumes at the discharge areas of Kori Nuclear Power Plant (KNPP) and Sinkori Nuclear Power Plant (SNPP) in Korea, which have different thermal effluent discharge systems. There were significant differences in sand, clay and organic carbon contents between sediments at the two discharge areas. Species richness and abundance of macrobenthos were higher at the SNPP discharge area than at that of the KNPP, although the values at both areas were comparable to previous studies in coastal areas of eastern Korea.

  • Recently, the lifetime extension of nuclear power plants has been considered. Thus, it is necessary to consider facility safety management and economic management. However, when the bolts in nuclear power plants are replaced and the turbines of nuclear power plant are disassembled, numerous problems are found in relation to stuck bolts in clamping parts. In order to solve these problems, a hybrid vacuum chamber was first designed and manufactured. It can perform arc ion plating and sputtering, which were used to deposit Ti/TiN on an A913 B7 bolt. X-ray diffraction (XRD) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) analyses were conducted to determine the composition and characteristics of the bolt, and tests were conducted to determine how long the bolt could endure under various conditions in a nuclear power plant. The SEM and XRD results clearly showed a continual and even coating layer. When this TiN-coated bolt is used in a nuclear power plant, the lifetime can be extended compared to a conventional bolt, but it is necessary to determine what additional properties are required.

  • Background: Climate change significantly influences the geographical distribution of plant species worldwide. Selecting indicator species allows for better-informed and more effective ecosystem management in response to climate change. The Korean Peninsula is the northernmost distribution zone of warm temperate evergreen broad-leaved (WTEB) species in Northeast Asia. Considering the ecological value of these species, we evaluated the current distribution range and future suitable habitat for 13 WTEB tree species designated as climate-sensitive biological indicator species. Results: Up-to-date and accurate WTEB species distribution maps were constructed using herbarium specimens and citizen science data from the Korea Biodiversity Observation Network. Current northern limits for several species have shifted to higher latitudes compared to previous records. For example, the northern latitude limit for Stauntonia hexaphylla is higher (37° 02' N, Deokjeokdo archipelago) than that reported previously (36° 13' N). The minimum temperature of the coldest month (Bio6) is the major factor influencing species distribution. Under future climate change scenarios, suitable habitats are predicted to expand toward higher latitudes inland and along the western coastal areas. Conclusions: Our results support the suitability of WTEB trees as significant biological indicators of species' responses to warming. The findings also suggest the need for consistent monitoring of species distribution shifts. This study provides an important baseline dataset for future monitoring and management of indicator species' responses to changing climate conditions in South Korea.

  • Thermal discharges from the nuclear power plants into neighboring Korean coastal waters have raised serious disputable arguments from the two parties of local fishermen and scientists involved since late 1970's. To meet the social demands and provide scientific and reasonable solutions, new set of standards have been established which will guide through measuring and processing the various variables and parameters in environmental and fishery impact assessment procedures for the thermal discharge from the nuclear power plants. These are made possible for the first time by the combined efforts by Korean Oceanography Society and Fishery Society. In this paper, Thermal Disharge Impact Index(TI) is proposed by the probability of the local temperatures exceeding critically to local fishery multiplied by the weighted sum of diverse environmental and ecological factors. The TI is essentially conceived to overcome the long-exising bad practices based on the particular excess temperature such as 1. The proposed TI based on the guideline principle proposed by the UNEP(2002) is expected to be practical, economic and self-adaptive. To prove the usefulness of the TI, it is highly recommended to conduct prototype experiments and exercises in a particular nuclear power plant site in the near future.

  • Lac is the dermal secretion of lac insect, Kerria lacca Kerr., which is used to make expensive natural dye, burnish, coating materials, in cosmetics and jewelry industry. Though it is very perspective industry and available of host plants over the country especially in southern districts of Bangladesh, lac cultivation is confined within some northern districts of Bangladesh. Experiment was conducted to find out the possibility of lac cultivation in two southwestern districts of Bangladesh: Khulna and Satkhira compared to Chapainowabgonj, the key lac producing district in Bangladesh, during February-October, 2006. The bark thickness, bark weight of ber plant, ratio of harvested and inoculated lac sticks, harvested raw lac, and harvested processed lac were measured and compared. Statistically, similar performance of lac cultivation was found regarding all parameters in three districts. These results recommended that lac cultivation is possible at the south-western coastal part of Bangladesh.

  • An investigation on the floras of Osik island and its neighboring two islands, 13km west of Gunsan, showed that there were a total of 305 kinds belonging to 81 families, 132 genus, 259 species, 42 varieties, 4 formas. Of the 305 kinds collected 213 kinds were herb and 92 kinds were woody plant. Seven species of evergreen broad-leaved trees including Euonymus japonica T., Eurya japonica T. and Elaeagnus macrophylla T. etc. are listed in the Norae-sum and Ga-do. The vegetations of Norae-sum and Ga-do were more favorable than that of Osik-do which vegetation was destructed by human inerferences. Coastal plants in these areas were about 30 species. It is interest that the floras of these areas were very similar to that of Gogunsangun-do (r=0.97) inspite of adjacency to inland area.

  • Accumulation of excessive salt in Reclaimed coastal tidelands can reduce crop yields, reduce the effectiveness of irrigation, degradation of soil structure, and affect other soil properties. These salts has shown to cause specific ions in the plant over a period of time leads to ion toxicity or ion imbalance and a continuous osmotic phase that prevents water uptake by plants due to osmotic pressure of saline soil solution. This review focuses on the characteristics of salt-affected soils, mechanisms of salt-tolerance plants, desalinization technology, and soil management to maintain sustainable agro-ecosystem in salt-affected soils.

  • This paper diagnosed the assessment problems and development types of the simple statement of the Sea Area Utilization Consultation System. and suggested the key assessment items for system improvement. The major types of Public Water occupation and use, and distribution characteristic of regional and coastal were analyzed by evaluate 529 review items during 2010-2012. The artificial structure installation including harbor and fishing port facilities in the South and West coast, and seawater supply and drainage for land-based aquaculture and power plant were dominated. The checklists considering each types of occupation and use in Public Water were suggested. In addition, policy proposals for system improvement were suggested.

  • The genus Acymatopus Takagi is reported for the first time from Korean fauna along with two nominate species, A. minor Takagi, 1965 and A. takeishii Masunaga, Saigusa & Yang, 2005. This genus belonging to the subfamily Hydrophorinae in the family Dolichopodidae. It comprised of only six species in the world and distributed only in Japan and China thus far. The genus is diagnosed by a metallic bluish-green body with thick gray tomentum, lacking black and white markings of mesonotum, 2 pairs of long marginal setae at scutellum and male's dorsally slightly curved fore tarsomere 1. Both adults and larvae of this genus are known to be found on rugged and rocky marine shores of the tidal zone. The authors found the first recorded species in the west seaside of Korea, where many barnacles inhabit. The descriptions and illustrations of external features including male genitalia of newly recorded species are provided in this paper.
