  • Although Fly ash possess viable engineering properties, an overwhelming majority of the fly ash from coal combustion is still placed in storage or disposal sites. Similarly, sludges generated from various water treatment operations are predominantly subject to the fate of land disposal. To prepare sludges for land disposal typically requires time consuming dewatering schemes, which can become extremely difficult to execute dependent upon the composition of the sludge and its affinity for water. This test was undertaken to reuse of fly ash and sludge with mix. In this paper includes of geotechnical properties of fly ash and fly ash-sludge mixture and results of compaction test, unconfined test, falling head test and CBR test and it was analyzed the effect on mixing fly ash with sludge.

  • In present study, we geochemically investigated the fresh coal ashes and the saline ash pond of an electric power plant in Korea, which burns imported bituminous coals. The goals are to see the chemical changes of the ash pond by reaction with coal ashes and to investigate the relative leachability of elements from the ashes by reaction with saline waters. For this study, one fresh fly ash, one fresh bottom ash, and 7 water samples were collected. All the ash samples and 2 water samples were analyzed for 55 elements. The results indicated that the fly ashes are enriched with chalcophilic elements such as Cu, Zn, Ga, Ge, Se, Cd, Sb, Au, Pb, and B relative to other elements. On the other hand, concentrations of As, Ba, Co, Ga, Li, Mn, Mo, Sb, U, V, W, and Zr are much higher in the ash pond than those dissolved in the seawater. Ag, Bi, Li, Mo, Rb, Sb, Sc, Se, Sn, Sr, and W show high ratios of elemental concentrations in pond water to those in the fly ash. Our results imply that the leaching of trace elements is regulated by geochemical controls such as solubility and adsorption even though the trace elements are relatively enriched on the ash surfaces after the coal combustion due to their volatilities.

  • The rare earth elements (REE) contents in coal ashes generated from domestic circulating fluidized bed combustion (CFBC) were identified for evaluating the exploitation possibilities for recovering rare earth elements. Total REE contents for all of the samples in this study ranged from 82.2 ~ 311.7 ppm, much lower than the 403.5 ppm given on the average value of world coal ash. As a result of analysis using REE concentration and Outlook coefficient, six types of coal ashes falls in the unpromising area (I). These results suggest that it is difficult to recover rare earth element from coal ashes at this stage. It has been confirmed that to recover rare earth elements in coal ashes, research on the pretreatment and concentration process for critical REE is requirement.

  • The purpose of this study is for the active use of the fly ash, which is a by-product of the combustion pulverizes coal thermal power plants, to compensate for the lack of landfill and for conservation of energy, by using fly ash as the supplementary cementitious material, and to prove its possibility as the related products of the cement. First of all, we examined strength development of Micro grinding fly ash by elevating its fineness and using $Na_{2}SO_{4}$ as an activator to elevate pozzolanic reaction of fly ash. Following fly ash replacement ratio and curing temperature we hope to prove its properties to suggest its possibility in the concrete and cement industry. In case of water curing, the more fineness and higher annexing of activator is, the higher strength is, and the higher curing temperature is the more pozzolanic reaction happens.

  • Considering the recent government policy toward North Korea and situation of power facilities in North Korea, it will be necessary to prepare for the consumption of the anthracite coal from Korea in coal-fired power plants. In this study, the anthracite co-fired tests in 500 MW thermal power plants were conducted with varying the main operation conditions, such as anthracite injection position in the boiler, coal fineness and combustion air flow, to investigate the effects on the generation of unburned carbon. It was confirmed that the generation of unburned carbon was remarkably reduced when the anthracite coal was injected into the boiler low burner with a relatively long residence time in the main combustion region, and that the increase of the coal fineness proportional to the combustion reaction surface area also reduces the generation of unburned carbon. An increase in the combustion air flow, which increase the combustion reactivity, also contributes to the reduction of unburned carbon. It is possible to maintain the unburned carbon generation below 5 % of the ash recycling quality by controlling the above operating conditions for the given mixing rate of anthracite, and the priority of changing the operating conditions within the test range is the highest for anthracite coal injection position.

  • In this study, the possibility of the use of a new raw material in paperboard industry was investigated. Fly ash is one of the residues generated in the combustion of coal and generally captured from the chimney of coal-fired power plant. This material is utilized in many industries including cement, soil stabilization, composite etc., but it is not used in paper industry. Three types of fly ashes were collected from Hadong, boryeong and Seocheon steam power plants and we investigated their properties by scanning electron micrographs and particle size distribution. Papers were manufactured with KOCC and fly ashes, and the physical properties such as bulk, tensile strength, internal bond strength and ISO brightness were measured to identify the effects of fly ash on the paper properties.

  • A study on combustion characteristic and evaluation of cost benefit were carried out using dried sewage sludge to evaluate co-combustion with coal in a coal-fired power plant. In the result of proximate analysis, sewage sludge has 78.09%, 79.65% of moisture content in A STP(Sewage Treatment Plant) and B STP, respectively. The dried sewage sludges show 0.12, 0.14 of fuel ratio value, respectively and over 30,000kcal/kg of combustible index. It means that the dried sewage sludges needs to reform from the results of fuel ratio and combustible index. As a results of the economical benefit evaluation of dried sewage sludge, about 73.4 million won through using the dried sewage sludges instead of coal and 56.4 million won through REC(Renewable Energy Certificate) cost were saved, respectively. On the other hand, it occurs 4.2 million won of additional cost related to ash disposal and 2.6 million won of investment/operation cost for co-combustion facility. In conclusion, co-combustion of dried sewage sludges with coal in a coal-fired power plant saves about 123 million won. However, it needs to consider for power supply to produce dried sewage sludges and opportunity cost for environmental pollution and so on to evaluate more reasonable benefit of co-combustion.

  • This case covers the issues related to the operation problem, cause analysis and improvement cases of the FGD that employed the non-leakage type GGH in coal-fired power plant for the first time in Korea. In the Cooler, there was a main problem that the tube is damaged by the ash cutting due to the high velocity of flue gas in the duct and by the weak wear resistance of material. In the Reheater, there was a main problem that the tube was corroded due to chlorine and sulfur in the circumstance of the low temperature. In order to solve those problems, we have improved the Reheater tube and tube fins by coating enamel to reduce corrosion rate.

  • This study was conducted to recycle fly ash containing an abundance of CaO generated from combustion in a circulating layer as a carbon storage medium. The study utilized XRD, TG-DTA and XRF analyses during the hydration of fly ash and identified calcium substances within fly ash that could be used in a carbonation process. $Ca^{2+}$ ions in the calcium substances were easily converted to hydrates. A carbonation experiment was done, which used the method of $CO_2$ gas injection to produce suspensions by mixing fly ash with distilled water. The results were analyzed using TG-DTA, XRD, and pH meter measurements. The study was able to verify that the reaction was completed at a $CO_2$ flow rate of 300cc/min approximately 30 minutes after an injection into a solution with a solid-liquid ratio of 1 : 10 of fly ash and distilled water. Moreover, the stirring time of the suspensions did not influence the reaction, and the reaction time was found to diminish as the portion of the fly ash became smaller. Thus, this study produced carbon storage fly ash having a $CO_2$ storage rate of about 71% through the utilization of the CaO content contained within fly ash.

  • Fly ash is the unburned residue resulting from the combustion of coal in utility and industrial boilers such as thermal power plants. Annually about 5 million tons of fly ash is being produced in korea. Less than 25 percent of total volume of fly ash is currently being used effectively for some ways. In the future, the volume of fly ash discharge from thermal power stations will be increasing more and more, and the development of the utilization of high volume fly ash is required. Fly ash has a lower compacted density and specific gravity than coarse grained natural aggregates but equivalent strength properties indicating that the fly ash could be used as a structural fill materials. So, clay-fly ash mixtures can be used as a fill material in the construction of embankments. Laboratory tests have been carried out to determine the physical, chemical, and geotechnical characteristics of the clay and fly ash. The fly ash is mixed with the clay in different proportions and the geotechnical characteristics of the mixtures have been studied also. In this study describes the results of the experimental study. The implications of the use of clay and clay-fly ash mixtures on the stability of embankments are discussed.
