This study was conducted to remove fluorine (F) (initial concentration of 9.5 mg/L) from leachate of reclaimed mine waste dump site via different methods: (1) co-precipitation using Ca-based materials; (2) adsorption using activated carbon and fly ash; and (3) coagulation and sedimentation using alum. The F removal efficiencies of each case were estimated as 65.6% (Ca co-precipitation), 27.9% (adsorption of activated carbon), 71.5% (adsorption of fly ash), and 96.6% (alum coagulation and sedimentation). In addition, the applicability of the continuous treatment process using alum coagulation was evaluated by lab-scale experiments using simulated mine drainage containing F of lower (6.4 mg/L) and higher (15.7 mg/L) concentrations, and it was confirmed that the treatment of both cases met the domestic standard (below 3 mg/L) for discharged water in clean areas. Furthermore, the results of bench-scale field tests indicated that the water quality standard of discharged water could be satisfied with the proper operation and management of the process.
In this study, the effects of two pre-treatment processes were observed prior to membrane filtration: pre-coagulation and pre-ozonation. To compare the effect of two above-mentioned pre-treatments, we adopted the four schemes: first one is direct membrane filtration of river surface water, second one is membrane filtration after pre-coagulation, third one is membrane filtration after pre-ozonation and fourth one is membrane filtration after pre-coagulation and pre-ozonation. There are two exceptional characteristics in applied processes. One is the usage of the MF membrane which has high ozone resisting characteristic. Therefore, ozone resides in membrane module during filtration. The other is adoption of Jet Mixed Separator (JMS) as coagulation-sedimentation process. The change in transmembrane pressure and permeate water quality were also examined. As a result, considering the filtration performance efficiency and permeate water quality, the process composed of filtration with combination of both pre-coagulation and pre-ozonation was proved most effective. The improved efficiency was due to the reduction of loading rate of fouling inducing materials to membrane module by coagulation process as well as variable reactions, such as degradation, particle destabilization and coagulation, occurred by residual ozone in membrane module. The additional effect of pre-coagulation before pre-ozonation is suppression of AOC, one of the by-products induced by ozonation. Therefore, combination of pre-coagulation and pre-ozonation is the effective process to overcome the major de-merit of ozonation i.e. by-products formation.

In this study, chemical coagulation conditions for treating combined sewer overflow(CSO) occurred during rainy season were evaluated by jar tests with aluminum sulfate[$Al_2(SO_4)_3{\cdot}17H_2O$] and ferric chloride[$FeCl_3{\cdot}6H_2O$]. The raw domestic sewage sampled from the primary sedimentation tank at a local sewage treatment plant was filtered through $150{\mu}m$ sieve before using. Point of zero charge(PZC) for various dose of aluminum sulfate occurred at pH 5.8-6.5, while for ferric chloride occurred at pH 5.3-6.0 in term of streaming current(SC) values. Charge neutralization ability of aluminum sulfate was bigger than that of ferric chloride. Optimum pH and dose of aluminum sulfate and ferric chloride were 6.2, 0.438mM and 5.8, 0.925mM, respectively. Removal efficiencies of TCOD, turbidity, SS and TP were 75, 97, 95, 96% with aluminum sulfate and 74, 96, 98, 99% with ferric chloride at their optimum coagulation conditions. More efficient removal of SS, TP and small particles was possible with ferric chloride at optimum coagulation conditions. Both SC values and COD removal started to increase where soluble phosphorus was completely removed.
With time, the stable management of turbidity is becoming more important in the water treatment process. So optimization of coagulation is important for the improvement of the sedimentation efficiency. we evaluated the mixing and hydrodynamic behavior in the coagulation basin using Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD). The items for evaluation are a location and the speed of agitator and angle of an injection pipe. The results of the CFD simulation, the efficacy of mixing in the coagulation basin was not affected according to one or two injection pipe and angle of an injection pipe. If there is a agitator near outlet of coagulation basin, the efficacy of mixing don't improve even though the speed of agitator increase. So location of agitator is perfect when it locate center at the inlet stream. The coagulation basin at this study, the proper speed of agitator is form 20rpm to 30rpm.

The purpose of this study is to investigate the effect of various types of coagulant on dewaterability and settleability of sewage sludge for the application of dewatering process. Cationic organic coagulants and inorganic coagulants of the aluminium base were used; PAC (Poly Aluminium chloride, $Al_2O_3$ 17%) and C-210P (0.2%). After Jar test, PAC 26 mg/L and 0.2% C-210P 55 mg/L was decided as the optimum concentration of the coagulant according to zeta potential measurement. pH, alkalinity and viscosity were measured in all experiments and the data on sedimentation characteristics is analyzed by SDI, SVI sedimentation rate and solid flux. The SRF(Specific Resistance of Filtration) experiment was conducted with the result of single and dual injection system as the dewaterability experiment. As a result, the organic coagulant making large floc has good characteristics of sedimentation and agglutination. Also, it is observed that the organic coagulants injection has a better dewaterability efficiency of coagulants under the condition of the lowest SRF value, followed by dual and inorganic coagulants injection.

This study presents a modeling method to predict fate of resuspended sediment in the development of deep-sea mineral resources. Resuspended deep-sea sediment during the development is considered a major environmental problem. In order to quantitatively analyze the resuspended sediment in the water column, particle size distribution (PSD) is considered an important factor. The model developed here includes PSD and coagulation process, as well as sedimentation process. Using the model, basic simulation was performed under representative environmental setting. The simulation showed the dynamics of change of particle size distribution for 50 m depth of water column up to 10 days of simulation time. Coagulation seemed an important factor in the fate of resuspended deep-sea sediment.

Disinfection by-products(DBPs) are formed through the reaction between chlorine and natural organic matter(NOM) in water treatment. For reducing the formation of chlorinated DBPs in the drinking water treatment, there is a need to evaluate the behavior of NOM fractions and the occurrence of DBPs for each fraction. Among the six fractions of NOM, the removal of HPOA and HPIN got accomplished through coagulation and sedimentation processes. Advanced water treatment processes were found to be most significant to remove the HPOA and HPON. It was found that HPOA made the most THMFP level than any other fractions and HPIA and HPOA formed higher HAAFP. The fraction of NOM with MW less than 1k Da was 32.5~54.3% in intake raw water. Mostly the organic matter with MW more than 1k Da was removed through coagulation and sedimentation in the drinking water treatment processes. In case of advanced water treatment processes, the organic matter with MW 1k~100k Da decreased by means of ozone oxidation for high molecular weight substances. As the result low molecular organic matter increased. In the BAC and GAC processes, the organic matter with MW less than 100k Da decreased.

As the interest in environmental pollution resulting from recent industrial development is converging, wastewater treatment problem of dying processing is one of important pending issue. Usually, flow mediation earth and settling pond etc. of processing plant to handle water or wastewater. Mediation is the wastewater that flowed past settling pond than material of heavy particles, water weight colloid particles that big solids are removed but are suspensibility material settlement exclusion impossible. So, we need flocculation and coagulation action to remove materials from this colloid state. For flocculation and coagulation action chemical agents to add back, addition of chemical agents forms floc of could settle size. That is, shorten the sedimentation time and quality of processing water because promoting sedimentation doing to do fines or suspended solids and colloid can materials large size and also, flocculation to annex efficiency of filtration augment. Therefore, I executed this research to prove that improving organic matter and chromaticity of treated water of processing epochally using organic coagulant informed positive ion co-polymerization superior in color wastewater through this research.

The effects of temperature, coagulants and pre-chlorination on the removal of turbidity and pathogenic protozoa by coagulation process were investigated using jar test of lab scale. In room temperature ($25^{\circ}C$), protozoa were removed over 1.0log at the proper concentration range of coagulants, and up to over 2log at the optimal concentration of coagulants. Considering the 1.5log target removal for Giardiain the processes of coagulation, sedimentation, and filtration, this results implies that the target could be satisfied. However, the removal of protozoa and turbidity was reduced, and optimal PAC concentration was narrowed in low turbidity and cold temperature ($5^{\circ}C$). These results suggest that the drop of coagulation efficiency may be occurred in winter if the conditions are not optimized. Despite the effect of water temperature, the relation of turbidity and protozoa removal appeared to be good. The various kinds of coagulants did not significantly affected for removals of turbidity and protozoa when the concentrations of $Al_2O_3$ were considered. Prechlorination did not increase or decrease the removal of turbidity and protozoa in optimum condition at room temperature, pH 7, 15mg/L of PAC concentration.
