The overall objective of this research was to find out the role of rapid mixing conditions in the species of hydrolyzed Al(III) formed by Al(III) coagulants and to evaluate the distribution of hydrolyzed Al(III) species by coagulant dose and coagulation pH. When an Al(III) salt was added to water, monomeric Al(III), polymeric Al(III), precipitate Al(III) was formed by Al(III) hydrolysis. The method of hydrolyzed Al(III) species characterization analysis was based on timed spectrophotometer with ferron as a color developing reagent. The hydrolytic species were divided into monomer, polymer, precipitate from the reaction kinetics. And then, the color intensity for monomeric Al(III) was read 3 min after mixing. With standard Al solution containing monomeric Al(III) only, the Al-ferron color intensity slightly increased with until about 3 min. During the rapid mixing period, for purewater, formation of dissolved Al(III) (monomer and polymer) was similar to rapid mixing condition, but for raw water, the species of Al(III) hydrolysis showed different result. During the rapid mixing period, for high coagulant dose, Al-ferron reaction increases rapidly. The kinetic constants, Ka and Kb, derived from Al-ferron reaction. The kinetic constants followed very well the defined tendencies for coagulation condition. For pure water, when the rapid mixing time increased, the kinetic constants, Ka and Kb showed lower values. Also, for raw water, when the rapid mixing time increased, the kinetic constants, Ka and Kb showed lower values.

Performance limiting factors (PLFs) derived from 161 drinking water treatment plants (DWTPs), assessed by International Technical Diagnosis & Assistance Center, were analyzed and evaluated in more detail in this study. In order to conduct study, 161 DWTPs were divided into five categories depending on their capacity, and into twelve groups according to processes and facilities. From the results of analysis, PLFs and their distribution ratio derived from each category were significantly different. Filtration was the most important performance limiting process in all DWTPs of five categories, and the PLFs in filtration were backwashing velocity, media configuration, bed depth, and formation of mud-ball. The PLFs in coagulation-flocculation process were found out to be coagulant dosage, mixing speed, mechanical problems, and others in the order of frequency of occurrence. Also, insufficient disinfection ability that is resulted from insufficient hydraulic detention time and improper chlorine dose and injection point, is the most significant among PLFs in a clear well. In the case of sedimentation, inappropriate baffle structure and excessive upward velocity were PLFs. In addition, the results showed that high turbid water and low alkalinity in a rainy season, ferric and manganese ions, and ammonia nitrogen have been contributed significantly on the performance of DWTPs.
In public water supply systems, Alum and/or PAC being used as a coagulant. It is well known that their use increased frequently the concentration of residual aluminum in filtered water upon operating conditions. This study was conducted to find the optimum conditions that both the concentration of residual aluminum and turbidity are minimized by changing such factors as pH, temperature, alum dosage, mixing rate, alkalinity and hardness. The results can be summarized as follows: The pH values for the minimum concentration of residual aluminum and turbidity as a given experimental condition were found at pH 6 and pH 7 respectively, the apparent clarity was best at pH 8. The floc settling rate was the greatest at pH 6.5, but the turbidity was high at the same condition. The more alum dosage, the higher the concentration of residual aluminum. However the alum dosage less than 15 mg/l tend to decrease in turbidity. Restabilization and enmeshment occurred near 15 mg/l and 20 mg/l of alum dose respectively. With the increase of mixing rate (rapid and slow), the concentration of residual aluminum and turbidity are increased and the same trend was found in increment of mixing time. At low water temperature, the concentration of residual aluminum was decreased, but turbidity was increased. It was confirmed that alkalinity had an effect on the coagulation efficiency, but hardness did not.
The objectives of this research are to investigate the proper coagulation conditions which are a type and doses of coagulants, mixing conditions (velocity gradients and mixing times), pH and so on through Jar-test, to evaluate the flux variations, permeate, backwashing according to characteristics of pretreatment of the wastewater by means of MF membranes for river maintenance water reuse. The effluent water from B-city K-sewage treatment plant are used for this research. Turbidity and suspended solids(SS) are 14.2 NTU and 10.4 mg/L respectively. This condition causes fouling for membrane process. The flux decline could be reduced when coagulation pretreatment was carried out. Optimal coagulations PAC which are commonly used in the sewage treatment plant was observed in this research. The results indicate that an optimal coagulation dose and pH are 80 ppm and pH of 7 respectively, but coagulation efficiency was lower at strong acid or strong base. Results showed that continuous and steady operations in membrane separation process by means of the effective removal of organic matter and turbidity with coagulation pretreatment of sewage secondary effluent were achieved.

The clay found in the river or in any waste water treatment plant usually have a very high content of water. A large amount of sediments hinder the navigation in river. In waste water treatment plant, there is requirement of settling the thick sludge. These problems are overcome by using rapid means of sedimentation and settling. This paper focus on how method of Electrokinetic sedimentation can be made faster. Sedimentation using Electrokinetic phenomenon has been discussed with varied voltage applied and effect and dose of coagulant in increasing the process. The experimental test has been carried out at water content that are generally present in the case of river and small canals carrying waste water. This paper also focus on different heavy metals concentration during the process and the power aspects of process. A series of experiment were done to support the proposed theory and how a bubble formation could hinder the purpose of experiment.
This study was performed to obtain optimal conditions for reduction of color in dye wastewaters using coagulation-sedimentation processes with redox reactions. The reduction of color as well as organic matters variation was observed after coagulation-sedimentation processes using FeSO$_4$ $\cdot$ 7H$_2$O and NaOCl. Coagulation-redox reaction was done with the dose of Coagulant and oxidant at various pH values. Redox reaction was done through jar-mixing and aeration. The results of study were as follows: 1. In the coagulation-sedimentation processes using FeSO$_4$ $\cdot$ 7H$_2$O, color reduction was heigher at pH 3. With variance of dosage of FeSO$_4$ $\cdot$ 7H$_2$O, color reduction was higher at 250 mg/l. When coagulation-sedimentation using FeSO$_4$ $\cdot$ 7H$_2$O 250 mg/l was added at pH 3, the reduction of color, COD$_{Mn}$, and COD$_{Cr}$ showed 47.6%, 21.3% and 22.1%, respectively. 2. When NaOCI was added at level of 100 ppm in raw wastewater at pH 3, the reduction of color, COD$_{Mn}$, and COD$_{Cr}$ showed 30.2%, 5.5% and 6.2%, respectively. 3. After coagulation-sedimentation processes by addition of FeSO$_4$ $\cdot$ 7H$_2$O, when NaOCl was added at level of 250 mg/l in supernant, color reduction was 47.8% in aeration and 37.5% in jar-mixing. 4. Color reduction by aeration was higher than that by jar-mixing.

This study provides the optimal conditions treating with the coagulation process and the other chemical treatment processes for dyeing wastewater, especially various dyeing complex wastewater. The results are shown as follows: 1. Optimum reaction condition of pH for ferrous sulfate was the range of 9 to 12. And when 3,000ppm(mg/l) of ferrous sulfate was dosed, the maximum $COD_{Mn}$ removal rate was approximately 40%. 2. In case of ferrous chloride and Bittern as coagulants, optimum pH range was 10 to 11. And maximum $COD_{Mn}$ removal rate was approximately 46% to 50% for dose of 2,000ppm(mg/l) to 6,000 ppm. 3. It is confirmed that the activated sludge process following coagulation precipitation method provides better treatment efficiency than the coagulation precipitation method following the activated sludge process. 4. The purpose of this study was to produce CGF (Cyanoguanidineformaldehyde resin) by organic compounds. 5. The complex coagulation agent by this study is the most economical coagulant with Alum(aluminum sulfate) and the removal efficiency is approximately 54% with 1,000ppm(mg/l) of pH range 6 to 7.

Wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) are required to meet the reinforced discharge standards which are differentiated as 0.2, 0.3 and 0.5 mg-TP/L for the district I, II and III, respectively. Although most of WWTPs are operating advanced biological phosphorus removal system, the supplementary phosphorus treatment facility using chemical addition should be required almost at all WWTPs. Therefore, water quality data from several exemplary full-scale plants operating phosphorus treatment process were analyzed to evaluate the reliability of removal performance. Additionally, a series of jar tests were conducted to find optimal coagulants dose for phosphorus removal by chemical precipitation and to describe characteristics of the reaction and sludge production. Chemical costs and the increasing sludge volume in physicochemical phosphorus removal process were estimated based on the results of jar tests. The minimum coagulant (aluminium sulfate and poly aluminium chloride) doses to keep TP concentration below 0.5 and 0.2 mg/L were around 25 and 30 mg/L (as $Al_2O_3$), respectively, in the mixed liquor of activated sludge. In the tertiary treatment facility, relatively lower coagulant doses of 1/12~1/3 the minimum doses for activated sludge were required to achieve the same TP concentrations of 0.2~0.5 mg/L. Increase in suspended solids concentration due to chemical precipitates in mixed liquor was estimated at 10~11%, compared to the concentration without chemical addition. When coagulant was added into mixed liquor, chemical (aluminium sulfate) cost was estimated to be 4~10 times higher than in secondary effluent coagulation/separation process. Sludge production to be wasted was also 4~10 times higher than secondary effluent coagulation/separation process.

The application of ultrafiltration (UF) and microfiltration (MF) membranes has been increased for drinking water purification. The advantages of UF/MF membrane process compared to conventional treatment processes are stable operation under varying feed water quality, smaller construction area, and automatic operation. Most membrane treatment plants are designed with polymeric membranes. Recently, some studies suggested that the process of treating surface water with ceramic membranes is competitive to the application of polymeric membranes. Higher water flux, less frequent cleaning, and much longer lifetime are the advantages of ceramic membrane comparing to polymeric membrane. Therefore, this research focused on the application of ceramic MF membrane pilot plant at the slow sand filtration plant. The ceramic membrane pilot plant has three trains that used raw water and sand filtered water as a feed water, respectively. For optimizing the pilot plant process, the coagulation with PACl coagulant was used as a pretreatment of ceramic membrane process. In addition, CEB (Chemical Enhanced Backwash) process using $H_2SO_4$ and NaOCl was used for 1.5 days, respectively. The experimental results showed that applying the optimum coagulant dose before membrane filtration showed enhancing membrane fluxes for both raw water and sand filtered water. Also, when using raw water as a feed of membrane, minimum fouling rate was 2.173 kPa/cycle with 25 mg/L of PACl and when using sand filtered water, the minimum fouling rate was 0.301 kPa/cycle with 5 mg/L of PACl.
Objectives: Industrial development in Korea results in a rapid increase in the number of chemicals, some of which may be responsible for toxicity to aquatic ecosystems. In addition, the types of hazardous chemicals included in industrial effluents have gradually increased. Therefore, chemical analysis alone is not enough to assess ecological effects of toxic chemicals in wastewater. Methods: In response to new regulations as whole effluent toxicity (WET) tests for effluent discharge of 15 publicly owned treatment works (POTWs) and 25 industrial effluent treatment plants in Gyeonggi-do, which will be effective from 2011, a necessity of studies emerges that investigates toxicity levels. Results: In case of the public treatment plants, none of them had exceeded the criteria for ecotoxicity. As for individual wastewater discharge facilities, on the other hand, two types were found to exceed the criteria: pulp and paper manufacturing facilities and pharmaceutical manufacturing facilities. For the pulp and paper manufacturing facilities, monitoring results could not help determine the exact toxicant identification. However, Daphnia magna inhibition effect or death was found to leave white plums, suggesting that suspended solids treated and the polymer used in coagulant dose. In case of pharmaceutical manufacturing facilities, the general water quality parameters cannot affect Daphia magna. However, conductivity and salinity can have an effect to be 14,000 ${\mu}s/cm$, 8.1‰ by salts, respectively. Toxicity Identification Evaluation (TIE) and Toxicity Reduction Evaluation (TRE) procedures results appeared to be effective for identifying toxic compounds in $Cl^{-}$ and $SO_4^{2-}$. Conclusions: It is necessary to develop control measures for water treatment chemicals and salts used for processes such as coagulation in individual wastewater discharge facilities in order to achieve the goal to protect aquatic ecosystems in public waters.
