  • Purpose: The aim of this study was to observe the surface roughness and surface topography of cobalt-chrome (Co-Cr) alloys with grinding time in dental barrel finishing. Methods: This study involved two types of Co-Cr alloys. Specimens were manufactured with the dimensions 10×10×2 mm. Each specimen was cast according to the manufacturer's instructions. The cast alloys were polished for 35 minutes at intervals of five minutes in an automatic barrel finishing. Specimens were imaged with a three-dimensional optical microscope to measure surface roughness. Results: BC specimens and GM specimens had the highest roughness (Ra) values in the ungrained control group, and the lowest Ra values were measured 20 minutes after grinding. Conclusion: The best conditions for grinding Co-Cr alloy using a dental barrel finishing were a weight ratio of polishing media, water, and compound of 150 g:200 g:5 g, and a rotation speed of 450 rpm. Grinding time to obtain appropriate surface roughness should be limited to 15 to 30 minutes.

  • We tried to improve the $H_2$-sorption properties of Mg by mechanical grinding under $H_2$ (reactive grinding) with CoO. The sample Mg+10wt.%CoO as prepared absorbs 1.25wt.% hydrogen and the activated sample absorbs 2.39wt.% hydrogen for 60min at 598K, $11.2barH_2$. The reactive grinding of Mg with CoO increases the $H_2$-sorption rates by facilitating nueleation(by creating defects on the surface of the Mg particles and by the additive), by making cracks on the surface of Mg particles and reducing the particle size of Mg and thus by shortening the diffusion distances of hydrogen atoms. Hydriding-dehydriding cycling increases the $H_2$-sorption rates by making cracks on the surface of Mg particles and reducing the particle size of Mg.

  • Today optical communication industry is developed; demand of optical communication part is increased. ZrO$_2$ ceramic ferrule is very significant part which determines transmission efficiency and quality of information in the optical communication part by connector of optical fibers. Being different from metal grinding, material removal through brittle fracture plays an important role in ZrO$_2$ ceramic grinding. Most of ZrO$_2$ ceramic ferrule processes are grinding which request high processing precision. Particularly, concentricity and cylindricity of inner and outer diameter are very important. The co-axle grinding process of ZrO$_2$ ceramic ferrule is to make its concentricity all of uniform before centerless grinding. Surface integrity of ZrO$_2$ ceramic ferrule is affected by grinding conditions, and equipment. In this study, surface integrity of workpiece according to such as a change of grinding wheel speed, feed rate, regulating wheel speed and grinding force is investigate to improve the concentricity and roundness of ZrO$_2$ ceramic ferrule from many experiments. Thus, if possible be finding highly efficient and quality grinding conditions.

  • As the optical communication industry is developed, the demand of optical communication part is increasing. $ZrO_2$ ceramic ferrule is very important part which can determines the transmission efficiency and information quality to connect the optical fibers. In general $ZrO_2$ ceramic ferrule is manufactured by grinding process because the demands precision is very high. For the precision grinding machining, it is very important that the error of feeding system is improved. Therefore, we estimated the dynamic characteristics in feeding system of ultra precision co-axial grinding machining system. Then, we performed the machining characteristics experiment.

  • An orbital grinding system uses a special motion to machine crankshafts in ships. When a crankshaft is operated, eccentric pins rotate and a grinding wheel moves in order to grind the pins. Thermal error caused by heat generated in the grinding process decreases the quality of the final product. In this study, the thermal error of an orbital grinding system caused by heat generation was investigated in order to predict the extent of thermal error that can occur during the grinding process. Since the machine position changes during orbital grinding, the pin part is divided into 30 degree intervals and heat is generated. Total thermal error was measured by summing the thermal errors associated with the pin and the grinding wheel. Total thermal error was found to reach a maximum at 60 degrees and a minimum at 210 degrees because of the shape of the crankshaft.

  • We investigated the effect of dry grinding of laterite on the extraction of nickel and cobalt. The major chemical compositions of the sample for this work were $SiO_2$, $Fe_2O_3$ and MgO. The sample contained 0.81% Ni and 0.02% Co. The major minerals of the sample were lizardite and quartz with minor amounts of forsterite and enstatite. The mean particle size, specific surface area and density of the ground sample decreased with increasing grinding time, while the amorphization of lizardite increased as identified by XRD analysis. The grinding enabled the extraction ratio of Ni and Co to increase by the breakdown of Mg-OH bonding in the lizardite structure. However, physical properties of quartz were not changed by grinding. The extraction ratio of Ni and Co increased with increasing grinding time. Approximately 80% of Ni and Co were extracted regardless of the kind of acid solutions when the sample was ground for 60 minutes.

  • In this paper, the grinding characteristics of internal thrust grinding were studied with vitreous CBN wheels using a machining center. Grinding experiments were performed according to grinding conditions, such as wheel feed speed and depth of cut, workpiece speed, and rate of grinding width. Additionally, the grinding force and grinding ratio were investigated though these experiments. Based on the experimental results, the grinding characteristics of internal thrust grinding were discussed.

  • This paper presents the application of a robot which aims at grinding automatically welding-bead remained in the removal job of working pieces for shipbuilding. In specific, the investigation on this application is composed of two parts; one topic is on the development of a robot platform vertically movable on a steel plate of hull, while the other topic is of the development of a grinding tool mechanism in order to remove welding-beads by using a diamond wheel installed on a servo cylinder (which can result in high working pressure on the grinding wheel). Besides, the development of a vision system for tracking welding-beads as well as recognizing welding surfaces is added for the convenience of this robot application to the removal of welding-beads remained in the working pieces for shipbuilding.
