  • $La_2Ce_2O_7$ and $CeO_2$ membranes were fabricated from the corresponding powders derived from sol-gel process with polyvinyl alcohol binder. These powders and membranes were characterized by XRD, BET, and FE-SEM analysis. Hydrogen and CO gas permeation experiments were performed using Sievert's type equipment. Both fluxes on these membranes were found to decrease with increase of the temperature. This phenomenon was followed by the surface and Knudsen diffusion mechanism. The hydrogen permeability of the $La_2Ce_2O_7$ membrane was found to be $7.27{\times}10^{-5}mol/m^2sPa$, with perm-selectivity of 7.24 at 303 K.

  • Methane activation through oxychlorination is in the spotlight due to the relatively mild reaction conditions at atmospheric pressure and in the temperature range of $450-550^{\circ}C$. Although $CeO_2$ is known to exhibit good activity for methane oxychlorination, significant amounts of by-products such as $CO_2$, CO and carbon deposits are produced during the reaction over $CeO_2$. We investigated the effect of iron in $FeO_x/CeO_2$ catalysts on methane oxychlorination. $FeO_x/CeO_2$ with 3 wt% iron shows the maximum yield at $510^{\circ}C$ with 23% conversion of methane and 65% selectivity of chloromethane. XRD and $H_2$ TPR results indicate that iron-cerium solid solution was formed, resulting in the production of more easily reduced cerium oxide and the suppression of catalysts sintering during the reaction. Furthermore, the selectivity of by-products decreased more significantly over $FeO_x/CeO_2$ than cerium oxide, which can be attributed to the facilitation of HCl oxidation arising from the enhanced reducibility of the former sample.

  • Ce-doped $Y_3Al_5O_{12}$ (YAG:Ce) phosphor powder was prepared using a ${NO_3}^-$-malonic acid-$NH_4NO_3-NH_3{\cdot}H_2O$ system. The YAG:Ce precursor was ignited at $240^{\circ}C$ and the resulting powder contained YAG:Ce crystallites (42%) - active in the visible region at 460 nm - amorphous particles (53%) - inactive at visible wavelengths - and less than 3% oxide (3%) crystallite impurities. The impurities transformed to acitive YAG:Ce crystallites at above $800^{\circ}C$. At above $1000^{\circ}C$, the amorphous phase became YAG phase and isolated $Ce_2O$ crystallites emerged. The powder particles comprised < $4{\mu}m$ secondary aggregates of 20 nm primary particles. The thermal dusting of the secondary particles coincided with the aggregation of the secondary particles at above $900^{\circ}C$.

  • $Ce^{4+}$, $Eu^{3+}$, $Tb^{3+}$ co-doped $Ca_3Si_3O_8F_2$ phosphor was synthesized via solid state reaction method using $CaF_2$, $CaCO_3$ and $SiO_2$ as raw materials for the host and $Eu_2O_3$, $CeO_2$, and $Tb_4O_7$ as activators. The luminescent properties of the phosphor was analysed by spectrofluorophotometer at room temperature. The effect of excitation wavelengths on the luminescent properties of the phosphor i.e. under near-ultraviolet (nUV) and visible excitations was investigated. The emission peaks of $Ce^{4+}$, $Eu^{3+}$, $Tb^{3+}$ co-doped $Ca_3Si_3O_8F_2$ phosphor lays at 480(blue band), 550(green band) and 611nm (red band) under 380nm excitation wavelength, attributed to the $Ce^{4+}$ ion, $Tb^{3+}$ ion and $Eu^{3+}$ ions respectively. The results reveal that the phosphor emits white light upon nUV (380nm) / visible (465nm) illumination, and a red light upon 395nm / 535nm illumination. RE ions doped $Ca_3Si_3O_8F_2$ is a promising white light phosphor for LEDs. The emission colours can be seen using Commission international de l'eclairage (CIE) co-ordinates. A single host phosphor emitting different colours under different excitations indicates that it is a potential phosphor having applications in many fields.

  • Rh doped Ni and Co catalysts, Rh-M/$CeO_2$(20 wt %)-$Al_2O_3$ (0.2 wt % of Rh; M = Ni or Co, 20 wt %) were synthesized to produce hydrogen via autothermal reforming (ATR) of commercial gasoline at $700^{\circ}C$ under the conditions of a S/C ratio of 2.0, an O/C ratio of 0.84, and a gas hourly space velocity (GHSV) of $20,000h^{-1}$. The Rh-Ni/$CeO_2$(20 wt %)-$Al_2O_3$ catalyst (1) exhibited excellent activities, with $H_2$ and ($H_2$+CO) yields of 2.04 and 2.58 mol/mol C, respectively. In addition, this catalyst proved to be highly stable over 100 h without catalyst deactivation, as evidenced by energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDX) and elemental analyses. Compared to 1, Rh-Co/$CeO_2$(20 wt %)-$Al_2O_3$ catalyst (2) exhibited relatively low stability, and its activity decreased after 57 h. In line with this observation, elemental analyses confirmed that nearly no carbon species were formed at 1 while carbon deposits (10 wt %) were found at 2 following the reaction, which suggests that carbon coking is the main process for catalyst deactivation.

  • Layered $LiNi_{0.83}Co_{0.11}Mn_{0.06}O_2$ cathode materials single- and dual-doped by the rare-earth elements Ce and Nd are successfully fabricated by using a coprecipitation-assisted solid-phase method. For comparison purposes, non-doping pristine $LiNi_{0.83}Co_{0.11}Mn_{0.06}O_2$ cathode material is also prepared using the same method. The crystal structure, morphology, and electrochemical performances are characterized using X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy dispersive spectrometer (EDS) mapping, and electrochemical techniques. The XRD data demonstrates that all prepared samples maintain a typical ${\alpha}-NaFeO_2$-layered structure with the R-3m space group, and that the doped samples with Ce and/or Nd have lower cation mixing than that of pristine samples without doping. The results of SEM and EDS show that doped elements are uniformly distributed in all samples. The electrochemical performances of all doped samples are better than those of pristine samples without doping. In addition, the Ce/Nd dual-doped cathode material shows the best cycling performance and the least capacity loss. At a 10 C-rate, the electrodes of Ce/Nd dual-doped cathode material exhibit good capacity retention of 72.7, 58.5, and 45.2% after 100, 200, and 300 cycles, respectively, compared to those of pristine samples without doping (24.4, 11.1, and 8.0%).

  • YAG:Ce phosphor were prepared in a self-propagating high-temperature synthesis (SHS) using a $1.5Y_2O_3+2.5Al_2O_3+0.116CeO_2+3.0KClO_3+kCO(NH_2)_2+m(C_2F_4)_n$ precursor mixture. The heat for the combustion propagation was provided by the reaction of a $KClO_3+CO(NH_2)_2+(C_2F_4)n$ mixture. Pure-phase YAG phosphor was synthesized at the combustion temperature of $1210^{\circ}C$ from k=3.6 mole and m=0.3 mole. The as-prepared YAG:Ce phosphor had a particle size of $2-10{\mu}m$. The addition of Teflon to the precursor mixture increased the YAG particle size and its luminescent intensity. The emission peak of the YAG phosphor was blue-shifted with an increase of Teflon concentration.

  • A SiC-$CeO_2$ composite membrane was successfully fabricated using an ally-hydridopolycarbosilane (AHPCS) binder and treated by dip-coating at 60 times with a $CeO_2$ sol solution. The dip-coated SiC membrane was calcined at 773 K and then sintered at 1173 K under an air atmosphere. The coated membrane was characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), field-emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM) and a BET surface analysis. The difference in permeation performance between $H_2$ and CO gases was measured by varying the temperature. The permeation flux of $H_2$ on the SiC membrane with layered $CeO_2$ was obtained as $8.45{\times}10^{-6}\;mol/m^2sPa$ at room temperature. The CO permeation flux was $2.64{\times}10^{-6}\;mol/m^2sPa$ at room temperature. The reaction enthalpy (${\Delta}H^{\circ}$) for the hydrogen permeation process was calculated as -7.82 J/mol by Arrhenius plots.

  • Series of unequal quantity Nd/Ce co-doped ceramic nuclear waste forms, (Gd, Nd)2(Zr, Ce)2O7, were prepared to tailor its ordered pyrochlore or disordered fluorite structure. The phase transition, microtopography, and elemental composition of the ceramic samples were systematically investigated, especially the effect of order-disorder structure on the chemical stability. It was confirmed that unequal quantity of Nd/Ce could synchronously replace the Gd/Zr-sites of Gd2Zr2O7. And the phase transition of order-disorder structure could be successfully tailored by regulating the average cationic radius ratio of (Gd, Nd)2(Zr, Ce)2O7 series. The elements of Gd, Nd, Zr, and Ce are uniformly distributed in the ordered or disordered structures. The MCC-1 leaching results showed that (Gd, Nd)2(Zr, Ce)2O7 pyrochlore ceramic nuclear waste forms had excellent chemical stability, whose elements' normalized leaching rates were as low as 10-4-10-7 g·m-2·d-1 after 7 days. In particular, the chemical stability of disordered structure was superior to that of ordered structure. It was proposed that the force constant and the closest packing were changed with the structure transformation resulting the chemical stability difference.
