  • In this work, the effect of chemical treatments on surface properties of SiC was investigated in mechanical interfacial properties of carbon fibers-reinforced composites. The surface properties of the SiC were determined by acid/base values and contact angles. The thermal stabilities of carbon fibers-reinforced composites were investigated by thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). Also, the mechanical interfacial properties of the composites were studied in interlaminar shear strength (ILSS) and critical strain energy release rate mode II $(G_{IIC})$ measurements. As a result, tile acidically treated SiC (A-SiC) had higher acid value than that of untreated SiC (V-SiC) or basically treated SiC (B-SiC). According to the contact angle measurements, it was observed that chemical treatments led to an increase of surface free energy of the SiC surfaces, mainly due to the increase of the specific (polar) component. The mechanical interfacial properties of the composites, including ILSS and $(G_{IIC})$, had been improved in the specimens treated by chemical solutions. These results were explained that good wetting played an important role in improving the degree of adhesion at interfaces between SiC and epoxy resin matrix.

  • This study was conducted to optimize the spring constant and the damping coefficient, which are design parameters of the tractor cabin suspension system, to minimize the ride vibration. A 3D tractor MBD (multi-body dynamics) model with a cabin suspension system was developed using a dynamic analysis program (Recurdyn). Using the developed model and optimization algorithm, the spring constant and the damping coefficient, which are the design parameters of the cabin suspension for the tractor, was were optimized so thatto minimize the maximum overshoot for the vertical displacement of the cabin was minimized. The percent maximum overshoot of the tractor cabin was simulated for the 13 initial models, which were obtained using the ISCD-II method, and for the 3 additional SAO models presented in the optimization algorithm software. The model that represents with the smallest percent maximum overshoot among the 16 models was selected as the optimized model. The percent maximum overshoot of the optimized model was about approximately 5% lower than that of the existing model.

  • The precision of retardation measurement has been improved upto $3{\sigma}$ <0.005 nm after improvements are made to the conventional transmission ellipsometer. Improvements are made such that, i) the polarizer module instead of the sample stage is rotated, ii) the light source is replaced, iii) the starting points of two rotating modules are accurately synchronized, and iv) the fine background retardation is compensated. Together with the newly introduced RVD (Retardation Vector Difference) method, the improved instrument is successfully applied to characterize the ultra small optical birefringence of the rubbed polyimide alignment layer, after the residual retardation due to glass substrate whose magnitude is about 1.0 nm is properly subtracted. It is verified that the net retardation of the alignment layer ranges from 0.05 nm to 0.15 nm.

  • The electrocatalytic reduction of dioxygen is investigated by cyclic voltammetry and chronoamperometry at glassy carbon electrode and carbon microelectrode coated with a variety of cobalt phenylporphyrins. The n value obtained at carbon microelectrode is slightly different from that determined at glassy carbon electrode. Dioxygen reduction catalyzed by the monormeric porphyrin Co(II)-TPP mainly occurs through the $2e^-$ reduction pathway resulting in the formation of hydrogen peroxide, electrocatalytic process carries out $4e^-$ reduction pathway of dioxygen to $H_2O$ at the electrodes coated with bis-cobalt phenylporphyrins. The electrocatalytic reduction of dioxygen is irreversible and diffusion controlled.

  • A Corynebacterium sp. capable of utilizing diaminododecane (DAD) were isolated from the soil by enrichment culture. Among 9 different kinds of substituted alkanes containing CN, $NH_2$, Cl, and SH groups (monoterminally or diterminally substituted) tested as carbon source, the isolate, designated as DAD 2-3, utilized DAD, putrescine dihydrochloride, dodecane and laurylamine. Dodecanethiol, thioanisole, decanedithiol, dicyanooctane, laurylcyanide, and dichlorodecane were not utilized. When emulgen 950 was added to the medium, the growth of DAD 2-3 was slightly accelerated. Isolate DAD 2-3 grown in the medium with DAD as carbon source formed .alpha.-ketoglutaric acid. Metabolic product of DAD 2-3 grown in a medium without nitrogen source was different from that of grown in a medium with $NH_4NO_3$. When glucose, putrescine, n-dodecane and other alkane derivatives were tested in place of DAD, isolate DAD 2-3 yielded products different from those they formed with DAD suggesting specificity of DAD as a carbon source.

  • In this paper, Frequency Synthesizer which is widely used for FH-SS system is proposed and the experimental results are analyzed. The performance of the DPLL(Digital Phase-Locked-Loop), which is the main part of the Synthesizer is analyzed by the computer program. Using Maxplus-II tool provided by altera. co., ltd, each part of the DPLL is designed and all of them is integrated into EPM7064SLC44-10 chip. And the simulation results are compared with the characteristics of the implemented circuits for analysis. And the experiential results show that the N value of the loop filter is toggled to adjacent N value, which result in phase jitter of the output. It can be resolved by increasing DCO(Digital Controlled oscillator) clock rate.

  • Three grades of activated carbon fibers (ACFs) were prepared from various precursors of plantic, synthetic, and mixed fabrics of viscose rayon and cotton. The ACFs an exhibited type I isotherms on the adsorption of nitrogen or argon. Micropore analysis revealed that the ACFs have uniform micropore size distribution in which their peak diameters were in the range of $5.6{\pm}0.3{\AA}$. The BET surface area of ACFs up to $1600m^2g^{-1}$ was proportional to the adsorption capacity of iodine. The BET values of the ACFs prepared were proportional to the burn-off degree of the products.

  • In this study, we investigated the effectiveness of an ultrasonic nanocrystal surface modification (UNSM) technique on the mechanical and wear properties of tungsten carbide (WC). The UNSM technique is a newly developed surface modification technique that increases the mechanical properties of materials by severe plastic deformation. The objective of this study was to improve the wear resistance of press die made of WC by applying the UNSM technique. We observed the microstructures of the untreated and UNSM-treated specimens using a scanning electron microscope (SEM), and energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX) was used to investigate the chemical composition. The SEM observations showed the pore size and the number of pores decreased after the UNSM treatment. We assessed the wear behavior of both the untreated and UNSM-treated specimens using a scratch test. The test results showed that the wear resistance of the UNSM-treated specimens increased by about 46% compared with the untreated specimens. This may be attributed to increased hardness, reduced surface roughness, induced compressive residual stress, and refined grain size following the application of the UNSM technique. In addition, we found that the UNSM treatment increased the carbon concentration to 63% from 33%. We expect that implementing the findings of this study will lead to an increase in the life of press dies.
