A non-fragile guaranteed cost control (GCC) problem is presented for a class of discrete time-delay nonlinear systems described by Takagi-Sugeno (T-S) fuzzy model. The systems are assumed to have norm-bounded time-varying uncertainties in the matrices of state, delayed state and control gains. Sufficient conditions are first obtained which guarantee that the closed-loop system is asymptotically stable and the closed-loop cost function value is not more than a specified upper bound. Then the design method of the non-fragile guaranteed cost controller is formulated in terms of the linear matrix inequality (LMI) approach. A numerical example is given to illustrate the effectiveness of the proposed design method.
This paper presents a closed loop identification algorithm in time domain. This algorithm can be used for identification of unstable system and for model validation of system which is difficult to derive analytical model. In time domain, projection filter, which projects a finite number of input output data of a system into its current space, is used to relate the state space model with a finite difference model. Then recursive relations between the Markov parameters and the ARX model coefficients are derived to identify the system, controller and Kalman filter Markov parameters recursively, which are finally used to identify the system, controller and Kalman filter gains. The NASA LAMSTF is used to validate the algorithms developed.

In this paper, a robust MRAC (model reference adaptive control) scheme is applied to control an electrohydraulic positioning system under various loads. The inverse dead-zone compensator in the control system cancels out the dead-zone response, and an integrator added to the controller provides good position-tracking ability. LQG/LTR (linear quadratic Gaussian control with loop transfer recovery) closed-loop model is used as the reference model for learning the MRAC system. LQG/LTR provides a systematic technique to design the linear controller that optimizes the objective function using some compromise between the control effort and the system performance in the frequency domain. Different external load tests are performed to investigate the effectiveness of the designed MRAC system in real time. The experimental results show that the tracking performance of the proposed system is highly accurate, which offers considerable robustness even with a large change in the load.
Vibration is an undesirable phenomenon in a dynamic system like lightly damped aerospace structures and active vibration control has gradually been employed to suppress vibration. The objective of the current investigation is to introduce an active torsional magneto-rheological (MR) fluid based damper for vibration control of a typical nose landing gear. They offer the adaptability of active control devices without requiring the associated large power sources. A torsional damper is designed and developed based on Bingham plastic shear flow model. The numerical analysis is carried out to estimate the damping coefficient and damping force. The designed damper is fabricated and an experimental setup is also established to characterize the damper and these results are compared with the analytical results. A typical FE model of Nose landing gear is developed to study the effectiveness of the damper. Open loop response analysis has been carried out and response levels are monitored at the piston tip of a nose landing gear for various loading conditions without damper and with MR-damper as semi-active device. The closed-loop full state feedback control scheme by the pole-placement technique is also applied to control the landing gear instability of an aircraft.
This paper discusses an entire procedure for a robust controller design and its implementation of an AMB (active magnetic bearing) spindle, which is part II of the papers presenting details of system modeling and robust control of an AMB spindle. Since there are various uncertainties in an AMB system and reliability is the most important factor for applications, robust control naturally gains attentions in this field. However, tight evaluations of various uncertainties based on experimental data and appropriate performance weightings for an AMB spindle are still ongoing research topics. In addition, there are few publications on experimental justification of a designed robust controller. In this paper, uncertainties for the AMB spindle are classified and described based on the measurement and identification results of part I, and an appropriate performance weighting scheme for the AMB spindle is developed. Then, a robust control is designed through the mixed ${\mu}$ synthesis based on the validated accurate nominal model of part I, and the robust controller is reduced considering its closed loop performance. The reduced robust controller is implemented and confirmed with measurements of closed-loop responses. The AMB spindle is operated up to 57,600 rpm and performance of the designed controller is compared with a benchmark PID controller through experiments. Experiments show that the robust controller offers higher stiffness and more efficient control of rigid modes than the benchmark PID controller.
Many types of smart materials and control laws are available to actively adjust the structure from various external disturbances. Usually, a certain type of control laws to activate a specific smart material is well established, but the effectiveness of the control scheme is limited by the choice of the smart materials and the responses of the structure. ER fluid is adequate to provide relatively large control force, on the other hand, the PZT patches are suitable to provide small but arbitrary control forces at any point along the structure. It was found that active vibration control mechanism using ER fluid failed to suppress the excitation off the resonant frequency with changed structural characteristics along the frequency response function of the closed loop of the control system. To compensate this additional peak of the closed loop system, PPF control using PZT as an actuator is added to construct a hybrid controller.

This paper presents a simple methodolosy that makes a continuous-time nonlinear system chaotic using fuzzy control. The nonlinear system is represented by the T-S fuzzy model. Then, a fuzzy controller makes the T-S fuzzy model, which could be stable or unstable, bounded and chaotic. The verification of chaos in the closed-loop system is done by the following procedures. We establish an asymptotically approximate relationship between a continuous-time T-S fuzzy system with time-delay and a discrete-time T-S fuzzy system. Then, we verify the chaos in the closed-loop system by applying the Marotto theorem to its associated discrete-time T-S fuzzy system.

This paper presents the position control of a closed-loop cylinder system using ER(electro-rheological)valve actuators. Following the field-dependent pressure analysis of the ER valve actuators on the basis of Bingham model of ER fluids, a 3 d.o.f. close-loop sylinder system having the heave, roll and pitch motions is proposed. The governing equations of motion are derived using Lagrange's equation, and a control model is established by considering system uncertain parameters such as load conditions. A sliding mode controller which has inherent robustness to system uncertainties is adopted to achieve robust tracking control performance. Tracking control results for sinusoidal trajectory were presented in order to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed control system.

Automatic flight control system (AFCS) for a low-cost unmanned aerial vehicle is described in this paper. Development process and block diagram of the AFCS are introduced. The flight control law for longitudinal and lateral channel autopilot is designed using optimization process. In this procedure, the performance index is composed of desired location of closed loop system poles and H$_2$norm of the resultant flight control system. This procedure is applied to the autopilot design of an unmanned target vehicle. Performance of the AFCS is evaluated by processor-in-the-loop simulation test and flight test. These results show that the AFCS has acceptable performance fur low cost UAV.
This paper presents a closed-loop evaluation of the Vehicle Stability Control (VSC) system using a vehicle simulator. Human driver-VSC interactions have been investigated under realistic operating conditions in the laboratory. Braking control inputs for vehicle stability enhancement have been directly derived from the sliding control law based on vehicle planar motion equations with differential braking. A driving simulator has been validated using actual vehicle driving test data. Real-time human-in-the loop simulation results in realistic driving situations have shown that the proposed controller reduces driving effort and enhances vehicle stability.
