This paper proposes a novel mechanism called Event-driven Uncore Frequency Scaler (eUFS) to improve the energy efficiency of the HPC systems. UFS exploits the hardware events such as LAPI (Last-level Cache Accesses Per Instructions) and CPI (Clock Cycles Per Instruction) to dynamically adjusts the uncore frequency. Hardware events are collected at a reference time period, and the target uncore frequency is determined using the collected event and the previous uncore frequency. Experiments with the NPB benchmarks demonstrate that the eUFS reduces the energy consumption by 6% on average for class C and D NPB benchmarks while it only increases the execution time by 2% on average.

Timing recovery loop composed of the Timing Error Detector(TED), loop filter and resampler is widely used for the timing synchronization in MQASK receivers. Since TED is sensitive to the delay between the symbol period of the signal and sampling period, the output is averaged out when the symbol rate and sampling rate are quite different the recovery loop cannot work at all. This paper presents a sampling frequency discriminator (SRD), which detects the frequency offset of the sampling clock to the symbol clock of the MQASK data transmitted. Employing the SRD, the closed loop timing recovery scheme performs the frequency-aided timing acquisition and achieve the synchronization at extremely high sampling frequency offset, which can be used in variable symbol rate MQASK receivers.

The optics and the signal processor of dual beam laser Doppler velocimeter(LDV) was fabricated. By using the dual beam and the forward scattering, the optics part of LDV was fabricated. And the signal processor of LDV was designed by the frequency counter type using new 11:6 period timing device in order to remove error signals, and was made of the reference clock of a 500 MHz ECL oscillator. Doppler frequencies from 10KHz to 70MHz can be measured using the signal processor. In the accuracy of the period counting part, from 1.81x10**-4% to 1.27% is estimated, and in the accuracy of the validation logic part, from 0.78% to 14.78% is estimated.
A cellular array parallel multiplier with parallel-inputs and parallel-outputs for performing the multiplication of two polynomials in the finite fields GF$(2^m)$ is presented in this paper. The presented cellular way parallel multiplier consists of three operation parts: the multiplicative operation part (MULOP), the irreducible polynomial operation part (IPOP), and the modular operation part (MODOP). The MULOP and the MODOP are composed if the basic cells which are designed with AND Bates and XOR Bates. The IPOP is constructed by XOR gates and D flip-flops. This multiplier is simulated by clock period l${\mu}\textrm{s}$ using PSpice. The proposed multiplier is designed by 24 AND gates, 32 XOR gates and 4 D flip-flops when degree m is 4. In case of using AOP irreducible polynomial, this multiplier requires 24 AND gates and XOR fates respectively. and not use D flip-flop. The operating time of MULOP in the presented multiplier requires one unit time(clock time), and the operating time of MODOP using IPOP requires m unit times(clock times). Therefore total operating time is m+1 unit times(clock times). The cellular array parallel multiplier is simple and regular for the wire routing and have the properties of concurrency and modularity. Also, it is expansible for the multiplication of two polynomials in the finite fields with very large m.
In the System on a Chip design, the on chip bus is one of the critical factors that decides the overall system performance. Especially, in the case or reusing the IPs such as processors, DSPs and multimedia IPs that requires higher bandwidth, the bandwidth problems of on chip bus are getting more serious. Recently ARM proposes the Multi-Layer AHB BusMatrix that is a highly efficient on chip bus to solve the bandwidth problems. The Multi-Layer AHB BusMatrix allows parallel access paths between multiple masters and slaves in a system. This is achieved by using a more complex interconnection matrix and gives the benefit of increased overall bus bandwidth, and a more flexible system architecture. However, there is one clock cycle delay for each master in existing Multi-Layer AHB BusMatrix whenever the master starts new transactions or changes the slave layers because of the Input Stage and arbitration logic realized with Moore type. In this paper, we improved the existing Multi-Layer AHB BusMatrix architecture to solve the one clock cycle delay problems and to reduce the area overhead of the Input Stage. With the elimination of the Input Stage and some restrictions on the arbitration scheme, we tan take away the one clock cycle delay and reduce the area overhead. Experimental results show that the end time of total bus transaction and the average latency time of improved Multi-Layer AHB BusMatrix are improved by $20\%\;and\;24\%$ respectively. in ease of executing a number of transactions by 4-beat incrementing burst type. Besides the total area and the clock period are reduced by $22\%\;and\;29\%$ respectively, compared with existing Multi-layer AHB BusMatrix.
Bone morphogenetic proteins (BMPs) are multifunctional cytokines that play important roles in a variety of cellular functions. Among BMP family members, BMP2 efficiently promotes osteoblast differentiation through Smad-mediated runt-related transcription factor 2 (Runx2) expression. Several recent studies suggest that BMPs are associated with clock genes, in particular Bmal1. Bmal1 protein heterodimerizes with Clock protein and then induces period 1 (Per1) expression. However, the role of Per1 on osteoblast differentiation remains unclear. In this study, we investigated whether Per1 is involved in osteoblast differentiation. MC3T3-E1 cells were treated with BMP2 for induction of osteoblastic differentiation. Osteogenic maker gene and Per1 mRNA expression were measured using real-time PCR. Interestingly, BMP2 treatment induced Per1 mRNA expression in MC3T3-E1 cells. To further investigate the function of Per1 on osteoblast differentiation, MC3T3-E1 cells were transiently transfected with pCMV-Per1. Per1 overexpression increased Runx2 mRNA and protein levels. Also, mRNA expression and promoter activity of osteocalcin were upregulated by Per1 overexpression. To investigate the effect of interaction between Per1 and osteogenic condition, MC3T3-E1 cells were cultured in osteogenic medium containing ascorbic acid and ${\beta}$-glycerophosphate. Osteogenic medium-induced ALP staining level and mineralization were synergistically increased by overexpression of Per1. Taken together, these results demonstrate that Per1 is a positive regulator of osteoblast differentiation.
Circadian rhythms can be seen in a variety of physiological functions in insects. Light is a powerful zeitgeber not only synchronizing but also modulating the rhythm to adjust insect's temporal structure to seasonal changes in the environmental cycle. There are two general effects of the length of light phase within 24 hr light cycles on the circadian rhythms, i.e., the modulation of free-running period and the waveform. Since the photoperiodic modulation of the free-running period is induced even in the clock mutant flies, per$\^$s/, the free-running period is not fully determined genetically. In crickets, the ratio of activity (a) and rest phase (p) under the constant darkness (DD) is clearly dependent on the photoperiod under which they have been kept. When experienced the longer photoperiod it becomes smaller. The magnitude of change in a/p-ratio is dependent on the number of cycles they experienced. The neuronal activity of the optic lobe in DD shows the a/p-ratio changing with the preceding photoperiod. These data suggest that a single circadian pacemaker stores and maintains the photoperiodic information and that there is a system that accumulates the effects of single photoperiod to cause greater effects.
The postpartum is a period of transition to motherhood where a childless woman transforms into a woman with children. Parents, especially mothers must perform an essential role of implementing instrumental and emotional care behaviors on part of the helpless, dependent, and immature infant. First-time mothers, however, suddenly face the responsibility of round the clock duty without neither parenting training during pregnancy, nor a time to gradually adapt to growing responsibilities after birth, with confusion and frustration as a result. Thus, after providing first-time mothers with childcare education as maternal role preparation, this study will try to examine its effects on childcare behaviors and confidence in maternal role during the early postpartum period. This quasi-experimental study using a nonequivalent control group non-synchronized design, was carried out from March 1995 to May 1996 to verify the effects of a childcare education program with first-time mothers who had vaginal delivery in Ewha University Hospital, Seoul, Korea, and collected data from 60 subjects who consented to the study. The education was given in the early postpartum period(48-72 hours after delivery) and to measure its effects, a posttest was done 4 weeks later with the results analyzed by SPSS shown in the following : 1. The childcare behavior score of the experimental group that had received the newborn care education was higher than the control group(t=3.5, P=.001). 2. The control group and the experimental group which had received the education showed no difference in degree of confidence in maternal role. 3. The higher the childcare behavior score, the higher the degree of confidence in maternal role was among the subjects(r=.56, P=.001). The preceding results are significant in that childcare practices can be promoted by providing child-care education to first-time mothers in the early postpartum period. Thus, this education can be used as a nursing intervention strategy in the early postpartum period.
Studies till date suggest the existence of a fetal biological clock in suprachiasmatic nuclei entrained by the circadian signal from mother. Melatonin from maternal pineal gland reaches to the fetus by crossing every biological barrier including placenta, hence fetuses were exposed to similar melatonin variation as their mother. Experimental modulations of maternal pineal gland activity of pregnant females either by exposing the them to different photoperiodic schedules or by exogenous melatonin treatments till the date of parturition, regulated the fetal plasma level of melatonin, thereby the prenatal (fetal) growth and development. This clearly suggests the maternal transport of melatonin to their fetus through placenta since fetal retina-hypothalamic tract was incomplete. An extension of experimental schedules till 60 days of post-partum period regulated the neonatal pineal gland activity and gonadal maturation along with their plasma levels of melatonin and sex steroids suggesting clearly the phenomenon of maternal transfer of melatonin to their young ones during the post-natal period, when the neonates were solely dependent on the mother's milk for their nutrition and energetic demands. On the basis of above observations we may suggest that the maternal pineal gland activity regulate the prenatal development by passing its melatonin to fetus via placenta and post-natal growth and sexual maturation by passing maternal melatonin to neonates via milk. Hence, the photoperiod perceived by mother is translated into the maternal plasma level of melatonin which not only regulates the prenatal but also the post-natal growth and sexual maturation of neonates.
Leaf movements in nyctinastic plants are produced by changes in the turgor of extensor and flexor cells, collectively called motor cells, in opposing regions of the leaf movement organ, the pulvinus. In Samanea saman, a tropical tree of the legume family, extensor cells shrink and flexor cells swell to bend the pulvinus and fold the leaf at night, whereas extensor cells swell and flexor cells shrink to straighten the pulvinus and extend the leaf in the daytime. These changes are caused by ion fluxes primarily of potassium and chloride, across the plasma membrane of the motor cells. These ion fluxes are regulated by exogenous light signals and an endogenous biolgical clock. Inward-directed K$^+$ channels are closed in extensor and open in flexor cells in the dark period, while these channels are open in extensor and closed in flexor cells in the light period. Blue light opens the closed K$^+$ channels in extensor and closes the open them in flexor cells during darkness. Illumination of red light followed by darkness induces to open the closed K$^+$ channels in flexor and to close the open K$^+$ channels in extensor cells in the light. The dynamics of K$^+$ channels in motor cells that are controlled by light signals are consistent with the behavior of the pulvini in intact plants. Therefore, these cell types are an attractive model system to elucidate regulations of ion transports and their signal transduction pathways in plants. This review is focused on light-controlled ion movements and regulatory mechanisms involved in phosphoinositide signaling in leaf movements in nyctinastic plants.
