  • Micro wave rotor is expected to improve the performance of micro gas turbines drastically. In the present study, a micro wave rotor test rig was designed and built for micro gas turbines of 1-10 kW output range, and its test runs were carried out with cold air flow. In the previous experiments, the leakage loss had large influence on its operating condition. Therefore, abradable coating was applied on the end walls to achieve the operation with zero clearance for leakage reduction and its improvement on the operating condition is discussed in this study.

  • Simple spanwise distribution models of deviation angle and pressure loss coefficient due to the tip leakage flow are formulated for use in association with the streamline curvature method as a flow analysis. Combining these new models with the previous deviation and loss models due to secondary flow, a robust streamline curvature method is established for flow analysis of single-stage, subsonic axial turbines with wide ranges of turning angle, aspect ratio and blading type. At the exit from rotor rows, the flow variables are mixed radially according to a spanwise transport equation. The proposed streamline curvature method is tested against a forced vortex type turbine as well as a free vortex type one. The results show that the spanwise variations of flow angle, axial velocity and loss coefficients at rotor exit are predicted with good accuracy, being comparable to a steady three-dimensional Navier-Stokes analysis. This simple and fast flow analysis is found to be very useful for the turbine design at the initial design phase.

  • The mobility method is used for optimizing dynamically-loaded journal bearings. Connecting -rod bearings in both diesel and gasoline engines are optimized by parametric studies of bearing span and clearance. The inertia effect of the connecting-rod is also included in this study. Minimum film thickness, maximum film pressure, and friction loss are calculated to satisfy the design conditions in both engines.

  • The secondary motion of piston greatly influences the dynamic and frictional performances of an engine. The motion is very related to the clearance, sliding velocity and skirt profile, etc. In our work, piston dynamics is analyzed with the commercial analysis software, PISDYN by Ricardo Consultant Engineers, Inc. The effects of profiles with piston pin offsets are studied regarding the secondary motion of piston and several results are compared.

  • A simple model of the tip leakage flow models of the rotor downstream flow is developed, based on Lakshminarayana's theoretical concept on the tip clearance flow and the experimental data published in open literature. And new spanwise distribution models of deviation angle and pressure loss coefficient due to the tip leakage flow are formulated for use in association with the streamline curvature method as a through flow analysis. Combining these new models and previous deviation and loss models due to secondary flow, a robust streamline curvature method is established for flow analysis of single-stage, subsonic axial turbines with wide ranges of turning angle, aspect ratio and blading type. At the exit from rotor rows, the flow variables are mixed radially according to a spanwise transport equation. The proposed streamline curvature method is tested against a forced vortex type turbine as well as a free vortex type one. • Leakage flow through turbine blade tip gap causes strong leakage vortex near the blade suction side and induces large aerodynamic losses. In this study, the conventional plane tip and various squealer tip blades were tested in a linear cascade in order to measure the effect of the tip shape on the total pressure loss. Three tip gap clearances of 0.6%, 1.3%, and 2.0% of blade span were tested. Flow measurement was conducted at one chord downstream from the trailing edge with a five-hole probe. Results showed that the leakage vortex was stronger than passage vortex and the mass averaged overall total pressure loss through the cascade was the lowest for suction side blade tip case. For all tested cases, the area averaged overall total pressure loss was increased as the tip clearance increased.

  • A small mixed-type turbine with a diameter of 19.9 mm has been substituted for a rotational part of pencil-type air tool. Usually, a vane-type rotor is applied to the rotational part of the air tool. However, the vane-type rotor has some problems, such as friction, abrasion, and necessity of accurate assembly etc.,. These problems make the life time of the vane-type air tool short, but air tools operated by mixed-type turbines are free of friction and abrasion because the turbine rotor dose not contact with the casing. Moreover, it is assembled easily because of no axis offset. These characteristics are merits for using air tools, but loss of power is inevitable on a non-contacting type rotor due to flow loss, tip clearance loss, and profile loss etc.,. In this study, four different rotors are tested, and their characteristics are investigated by measuring the specific output power. Additionally, optimum nozzle location against the rotor is studied. Output powers are obtained through measured pressure, temperature, torque, rotational speed, and flow rate. The experimental results obtained with four different rotors show that the rotor blade shape greatly influences to the performance, and the optimum nozzle location exists near the mid span of the rotor.

  • R410a which is one of HFC refrigerants is being considered to be a promising replacement for R22 widely used in domestic air conditioners. The rolling piston type rotary compressors for R410a have lower energy efficiency than those for R22 because of the high pressure difference between a suction chamber and a discharge chamber in the compression mechanism. in addition, the re-expansion gas loss of the rotary compressor for R410a which occurs a ta clearance volume in a discharge port becomes larger than that for R22 due to high density of R410a refrigerant. Therefore, Pressure-Volume analyses for various design parameters of a discharge system were carried out to improve efficiency of a R410a rotary compressor. The results such as performance dta, over-compression loss, and re-expansion loss were acquired by P-V analyses and analyzed quantitatively. As a conclusion, the optimal specifications of several design parameters of a discharge system were obtained by analyzing P-V diagrams.

  • The axial position of an impeller is misaligned in the process of manufacturing and assembling. For a single suction centrifugal pump with balancing holes, the effect of axial displacement of impeller on the performance, leakage loss and axial thrust acting on the impeller is experimentally investigated. The axial displacement decreases the pump efficiency, increases the leakage through the clearance between wearing ring and impeller, and affects the characteristics of axial thrust.
