Phenolic compounds from 7 species of naturalized invader species and Korean wild plants were analyzed by high performance liquid chromatography. Eleven phenolic compounds including benzoic acid were identified. The extract of naturalized plants was significantly more inhibitory to seed germination and seedling growth of the both naturalized and Korean wild plants. The content of total phenolic compounds in each extract were 43.5 mg/l in Ailanthus altissima as the maximum amount and 25.5 mg/l in Phytolacca americana as the minimum. Phytotoxic substances of ethanol extracts was investigated for antifungal activity against 23 selected fungus species. The antifungal activity of Phytolacca americana showed the greatest clear zone of 23 mm in Aspergillus awamori and its activity had an effect against 6 fungus species. Ailanthus altissima formed the greatest clear zone of 26 mm in Erwinia carotovora sub. sp. carotovora and had an effect agsinst 2 fungus species.
A hydroxyapatite air filter was made with hydroxyapatite powder, water and chitosan solution. The structures of the sintered HAp samples were determined by MP-XRD. Hydroxyapatite has antibacteria properties against Staphylococcus aureus, Klebsiella pneumoniae and Escherichia coli. The bacteria removal rate was 99.9%. In the case of Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Colon bacterium and Listeria monocytogenes, the hydroxyapatite air filters had a clear zone which confirmed antibacteria properties. Using the microscopy, we observed that the HAp powder absorbed E. coli bacteria.

Drones of honeybee (Apis mellifera) have been regarded as a useful value only when mating with queen bee. However, the drone pupae have been reported to be nutritionally valuable, and a potential beekeeping product. In this study, drone pupae extracted with 5% acetic acid were used to measure anti-thrombosis related fibrinolytic activity using Strup and Mullertz fibrin plate method. As a result, the drone pupae extract showed higher effect of fibrinolytic activity(clear zone diameter 20.83mm) compared to the human plasmin (clear zone diameter 12.93mm) used as a positive control. It was suggested that the extract of drone pupae can be developed as a functional material helping prevention or treatment of various vascular diseases.
The cytotoxic and antibacterial activities of Sanguisorbae officinalis L., which is known as a major tannin source, were investigated to check the possible use of natural nutraceutics or cosmetics. The S. officinalis inhibited cancer cell growth in a dose-dependant manner. Also, the clear zone against various bacteria such as Staphylococcus aureus, S. epidermidis, E. coli were evident at 0.5 and 1 mg/disc. When the concentrations were 500 and 1,000 ppm, growth of all aerobic bacteria increased at early stage but decrease afterward. The results indicated that S. officinalis had the anti-skin cancer activity as well as antibacterial activity against skin-related bacteria.
Vibrio are become prevailing if superficial temperature of ocean is raised and their activities of area are expanded and most of ocean creatures(fishes, oysters etc) are polluted with vibrio. The one who has taken these poluted fishes and aysters uncooked caused foodpoisoning and diarrhea from Vibrio. Frequencies of these diseases breakout is disposed in westsea shore of Korea. According to ancient and traditional Korean medical book -${\ulcorner}$Bangyak Happyeon${\lrcorner}$(Collection of Local Medicines, 1884) - and their single prescribes, we carried out experiment check the activities of natural medicinal effects on Vibrio parahemolyticus. The prescriptions of trial materials are processed from extraction boiling water and 80% methanol and followed freeze dried and adsorbed to every discs in dosage of 10mg. Gentamycin of 10mg were used for control. The result of compound prescription displayed special diseases in antimicrobial activities of boiling water and MeOH extraction compared with control. In compound prescription, extraction MeOH of Sashinhwan(clear zone : 17mm) presented extraordinaire antimicrobial activity. In single prescription, extraction of boiling water(clear zone : 16mm) and MeOH(clear zone : 18mm) of Fructus Chebulae presented extraordinaire antimicrobial activity. The MBC of Fructus Chebulae extracts was expressed in boiling water(1.28mg/ml) and MeOH(0.64mg/ml).
This study was conducted to isolate and identify the lactic acid bacteria (LAB) from spent mushroom substrates (SMS) for the effective anaerobic fermentation to utilize SMS as an animal feed and to determine the optimal medium conditions for their growth. At first, a total of 23 strains were isolated from the ensiled SMS based on the LAB counts and pH tested. Then, a total of 16 strains which rapidly produce lactate and decreased the pH, were selected for a screening test. The optical density (OD), pH, and yellow clear zone were tested for the selected 16 strains. Among the strains, KU5 strain had wider yellow clear zone and lower pH and KU13 strain had higher OD at 24 hr of incubation and wider yellow clear zone compared to other strains and control strain (Lactobacillus plantarum KCCM 12116). Accordingly, KU5 and KU13 strains were finally selected. The KU5 and KU13 were identified as Lactobacillus plantarum by the 16S rRNA sequencing. The KU5 strain was named as Lactobacillus plantarum KU5, and the KU13 strain was named as Lactobacillus plantarum KU13. Lactobacillus plantarum KU5 and Lactobacillus plantarum KU13 were registered at the National Center for Biotechnology Information (NCBI). Access number of Lactobacillus plantarum KU5 was HQ542227 and that of Lactobacillus plantarum KU13 was HQ542228. The optimal medium conditions for growth of KU5 and KU13 were soybean meal 2% and formulated feed 2%, respectively.

This study was conducted to ferment high quality vinegar by using Omija fruit. Strains of bacteria producing acetic acid were isolated from spoiled Omija wine (OV1 and OV2) and traditional rice vinegar (RA). The bacterium was from optimally-oxidized Omija wine containing 6.0% ethanol and from Omija vinegar with 5.21% acetic acid by 14 days of fermentation. The Omija vinegar got the highest sensory score (5.80) among several commercial vinegars. The Omija vinegar showed a potent antibacterial activity against Staphylococcus aureus, Bacillus subtilis, Escherichia coli, and Pseudomonas fluorescens by the paper disc test, while Omija wine had limited antibacterial activity against S. aureus and P. fluorescens. The diameter of the clear zone formed by the paper disc test using Omija vinegar was not less than 9.5 mm. The DPPH free radical-scavenging activity of Omija wine was higher than that from Omija water extracts. The nitrite scavenging ability of Omija wine (36.98% of all nitrites present) and vinegar (31.14%) was higher than that from Omija water extracts (22.53%). Omija vinegar exhibited strong antibacterial and antioxidant activities. In conclusion, we prepared high quality vinegar from dried Omija.
The physiological activity of St. John's wort extracts were examined. Total phenol contents in the ethanol extracts $(246.0{\pm}10.5\;{\mu}g/ml)$ with St. John's wort leaf was higher than that in water extract $(237.4{\pm}13.2\;{\mu}g/ml)$. The electron donating ability in the water extracts and in the ethanol extracts were 95.0% and 95.2% respectively. Antioxidant protection factor of the ethanol extract was higher than that of the water extract. The water extract from St. John's wort leaves did not show an antimicrobial activity against Helicobacter pylori, but the ethanol extract revealed high antimicrobial activities such as 11 mm of clear zone in $100\;{\mu}g/ml$ of phenol content and 13 mm of clear zone in $150\;{\mu}g/ml$ of phenol content. The hot water extract showed an angiotensin converting enzyme inhibitory activity of 19.2%. The xanthin oxidase inhibitory activity of hot water and ethanol extract were very high, amounting to 84.8% and 100% respectively. The results suggested a possibility for developing the phenol compounds in St. John's wort as anti Helicobacter pylori, anti-oxidant and anti-gout agents.
Isolation and identification of pathogens from slaughter and meat processing plant were investigated. Antimicrobial activity of Amaranthus lividus against isolated pathogens such as Aeromonas sobria, Escherichia coli, Escherichia coli O157, Listeria monocytogenes, Salmonella spp., and Staphylococcus aureus was investigated. Among the chloroform, ethyl acetate and buthanol fraction of amaranthus lividus showed inhibitory effect against Aeromonas sobria CLFM1 and Escherichia coli CLFM2. Antimicrobial substance in chloroform fraction was isolated by silica gel adsorption column chromatography, sephadex LH-20 column chromatography and silica gel partition column chromatography. The antimicrobial compound of amaranthus lividus was identified as diethyl phtalate by HPLC, GC-MS, H-NMR and C-NMR.
