  • In this present paper, a semi-analytical mesh-free method is employed for the three-dimensional free vibration analysis of a bi-directional functionally graded piezoelectric circular structure. The dependent variables have been expanded by Fourier series with respect to the circumferential direction and have been discretized through radial and axial directions based on the mesh-free shape function. The current approach has a distinct advantage. The nonlinear Green-Lagrange strain is employed as the relationship between strain and displacement fields to observe thermal impacts in stiffness matrices. Nevertheless, high order terms have been neglected at the final steps of equations driving. The material properties are assumed to vary continuously in both radial and axial directions simultaneously in accordance with a power law distribution. The convergence and validation studies are conducted by comparing our proposed solution with available published results to investigate the accuracy and efficiency of our approach. After the validation study, a parametric study is undertaken to investigate the temperature effects, different types of polarization, mechanical and electric boundary conditions and geometry parameters of structures on the natural frequencies of functionally graded piezoelectric circular structures.

  • This paper presents a parametric study on the free vibration analysis of a functionally graded material (FGM) circular plate with non-uniform thickness resting on a variable Pasternak elastic foundation. The mechanical properties of the material vary in the transverse direction through the thickness of the plate according to the power-law distribution to represent the constituent components. The equation of motion of the circular plate has been carried out based on the classical plate theory (CPT), and the differential quadrature method (DQM) is employed to solve the governing equations as a semi-analytical method. The grid points are chosen based on Chebyshev-Gauss-Lobatto distribution to achieve acceptable convergence and better accuracy. The influence of geometric parameters, variable elastic foundation, and functionally graded variation for clamped and simply supported boundary conditions on the first three natural frequencies are investigated. Comparisons of results with similar studies in the literature have been presented and two-dimensional mode shapes for particular plates have been plotted to illustrate the effect of variable thickness profile.

  • The purpose of the present paper is to investigate the noise and vibration characteristics of externally pressurized air proceeding bearings with a circular slot restrictor. To do this, the nonlinear transient analysis including rotor imbalance was performed for a rotor-bearing system. The effects of radial clearance and the width of the bearing and mass eccentricity of the rotor on the noise and vibration characteristics of the bearing are also examined. The results show that the noise and vibration of the rotor-bearing system first increase up to critical speed of the system, and then decrease up to instability threshold speed of the system as the rotational speed of the rotor increases, and the noise of the bearing is markedly influenced by the mass eccentricity of the rotor and the radial clearance and the width of the bearing.

  • This paper deals with the free vibration of two identical circular plates coupled with a bounded fluid. An analytical method based on the [mite Fourier-Bessel series expansion and Rayleigh-Ritz method is suggested. In the theory, it is assumed that the ideal fluid is filled in a rigid cylindrical container and the two plates are clamped along the plate edges. The proposed method is verified by the finite element analysis using commercial software with a good accuracy. Two transverse vibration modes, namely in-phase and out-of-phase, are observed alternately in the fluid-coupled system when the number of nodal circles increases for the fixed nodal diameter. The effect of gap between the plates on the fluid-coupled natural frequency is also investigated.

  • This paper presents a theoretical approach to calculate the resonant frequency of a thickness vibration mode in the radial direction for a 1-3 piezoelectric composite transducer of circular arch shape. For the composite transducer composed of a piezoelectric ceramic and a polymer, vibration parameters were derived according to the volume ratio of a ceramic, and a vibration characteristic equation was derived from the piezoelectric governing equations with adequate boundary conditions. The fundamental resonant frequencies were calculated numerically and verified by comparing them with those obtained from the finite element analysis and the experiment. The volume ratio and the thickness are more substantial than the curvature radius to determine the fundamental resonant characteristics, and the fundamental resonant frequency becomes higher for the larger volume ratio of the piezoelectric ceramic and for the smaller thickness.

  • This study aims to investigate the characteristics of the flow-induced vibrations of two circular cylinders. The characteristics of the flow-induced vibrations are examined for various flow velocities and spaces between the two cylinders when they are arranged in tandem, staggered, and side-by-side positions. The results are as follows: (i) Seven flow-induced vibration patterns are observed when the two circular cylinders are placed in either tandem, staggered, or side-by-side positions. (ii) The two cylinders induce a vibration because they affect each other. (iii) The easiest way to induce a vibration of the two cylinders is by placing them in the side-by-side position among the three arrangements (tandem, staggered, and side-by-side). (iv) The change in the maximum flow-induced vibration of the two cylinders depends strongly on the fluctuating lift forces of each of them.

  • Underwater vehicles such as UUVs (Unmanned Underwater Vehicles) and ROVs (Remotely Operated Vehicles) use sonar to detect their underwater environment or other underwater vehicles. The underwater vehicles designed recently have an electrical power system with high rotational speed. This system can generate high frequency vibrations above 10 kHz, and these vibrations can cause bad (negative) effects on the performance of the sonar. In many previous investigations, numerical analyses have been used for high frequency vibration problems. In this study, an experimental analysis was carried out, and a circular cylindrical shell was considered as the hull structure of an underwater vehicle. Frequency transfer functions for the circular cylindrical shell were identified using an experimental vibration analysis in the air and in a fully-submerged condition. We compare the frequency transfer functions in the air and water to obtain hydro-elastic effects. It is found that the dynamic characteristics of the circular cylindrical shell are changed by varying the response position.

  • Frequency equation for clamped-free circular cylindrical thin shell is derived by the application of Rayleigh-Ritz method using the Sanders shell equation. The cubic frequency equation is solved for each axial and circumferential mode number. Integration of the beam characteristic funcitions was performed via Mathematica which results in more accurate integration of the beam functions that affect the accuracy of the frequency. The natural frequencies from this calculation are compared with existing results. It shows that this calculation predicts natural frequencies closer to the test results than existing results.

  • Based on the experiment for the frequency characteristics and the feedback theory of the impinging-tones, the unstable characteristics of the symmetric mode is analyzed among the various unstable modes of circular impinging jets. There are two different symmetric modes; one is the low-frequency mode S1 due to the vortex at the outside of the jet and the high-frequency mode S2 due to the inside vortex. Each mode has its own characterictics of convection speed decreasing with frequency.
