  • Recently, the circuit-breaker rated voltage is getting higher as the transmission voltage increases. To increase the circuit-breaker rated voltage, a multi-break circuit-breaker which has two or more breakers in series is adopted. For multi-break circuit-breaker, a grading capacitor is used to mitigate the Transient Recovery Voltage(TRV) and control the voltage distribution across the individual interrupter units. However, all over the world, there are many failures such as mechanical damage, explosion due to insulation breakdown. Therefore, it is necessary to study the causes of failure and the new performance verification method. In this paper, we investigate the causes of dielectric breakdown of the grading capacitors in the KEPCO power system and propose the performance verification method.

  • Testing capacity of KERI synthetic short-circuit testing facilities has been upgraded to fulfill the requirements up to 550kV 63kA, 1-break circuit breaker ratings. Specially the current capacity was increased 50kA to 63kA and the full type test of 362kV 63kA circuit breaker(1-break) was firstly completed in domestic. UP to now, domestic manufacturers have depended on the foreign testing laboratory for performance verification of newly designed products. This paper introduces the summary of the increased short-circuit testing facilities, the testing techniques and its results for the making and breaking performance of 362kV, 63kA circuit breaker which was Performed according to IEEE C37.06(1999) used in North America.

  • In case of dead-tank circuit breaker with the earthed enclosure, the dielectric performance for phase to ground should be verified under the hot-gas condition produced by the current interruption. This test condition is required in breaking test duties with the rated short-circuit current and rated voltage. And, KERI has completed the reinforcement of the synthetic testing facilities and these facilities have the testing capacity which enables the full-pole testing for 800kV circuit breaker by adopting the series voltage injection method. So, this paper introduced the test circuit and procedures about the full-pole and the multi-part testing method which was devised to estimate the full -insulation of phase-to-ground for the multi-pole and dead-tank circuit breaker.

  • Very frequently the compressible flow in an extinction nozzle of gas circuit breaker is simulated under no arc assumption, which can be reasonable for both high and low current breakings. In the present study, computations are performed to investigate the major features of the compressible flows inside the arc extinction nozzle of gas circuit breaker. A fully implicit finite volume scheme is applied to solve the two-dimensional, steady, compressible, Wavier-Stokes equations. The computed results are validated with the previous experimental data available. Several types of turbulence models are explored to reasonably predict the complicated flows inside the arc extinction nozzle. The obtained results show that the shock wave boundary layer interaction inside the nozzle significantly influences the whole performance of the gas breaker.

  • In railways powered by AC power, the main circuit breaker (MCB) is used for supplying the electric power to the catenary of the vehicle. Generally, the main circuit breaker is located between the pantograph and the main transformer, and the phase of the power applied to the vehicle changes according to the operation timing of the main circuit breaker. The operation of the main circuit breaker should be actively controlled according to the phase of the power source, since the phase of the power causes unintended transient states in the vehicle's electrical system in the form of an inrush current and surge voltage. However, the MCB has a delay time when it operates which is not constant. Therefore, an intelligent controller is needed to predict the operation delay time and control the opening and closing of the MCB.

  • An air circuit breaker (ACB) with novel double-breaker contact and permanent magnet actuator (PMA) is presented. Three-dimensional (3-D) finite element method (FEM) is employed to compute the electro-dynamic repulsion forces, including the Holm force and Lorentz force, which are acting on the static and movable contacts. The electro-dynamic repulsion forces of different contact pieces are computed, illustrating there is an optimal number of contact pieces for the ACB being studied. The electro-dynamic repulsion force of each contact, which varies from the outer position to the inner position, is also computed. Finally, the contacts of the double-breaker are manufactured according to the analyzed results to validate the simulations.

  • The importance of DC breakers as key protection equipment is increasing in accordance with growing concerns on MVDC distribution network systems without DC/AC conversion. Different from the situation in AC systems, no natural zero-crossing point exists in DC systems. Thus, DC breaker technology is more difficult than AC breaker technology. The solutions for DC breakers can be divided into three types: mechanical, power electronics, and hybrid. In this study, the operating principles of several topologies of hybrid circuit breakers and that of the proposed DC breaker are analyzed and simulated by sorting two types. The breakers are compared in terms of the type and number of semiconductors, volume, power loss, auxiliary components, isolation, and other aspects. The advantages and disadvantages of the breakers are also analyzed.

  • The DC system has less power loss compared to the AC system because there is no influence of frequency and dielectric loss. However, the zero-crossing point of the current is not detected in the event of a short circuit fault, and it is difficult to interruption due to the large fault current that occurs during the opening, so the reliability of the DC breaker is required. As a solution to this, an LC resonance DC circuit breaker combined a superconducting element has been proposed. This is a method of limiting the fault current, which rises rapidly in case of a short circuit fault, with the quench resistance of the superconducting element, and interruption the fault current passing through the zero-crossing point through LC resonance. The superconducting current limiting element combined to the DC circuit breaker plays an important role in reducing the electrical burden of the circuit breaker. However, at the beginning of a short circuit fault, superconducting devices also have a large electrical burden due to large fault currents, which can destroy the element. In this paper, the reactor is connected to the source side of the circuit using PSCAD/EMTDC. After that, the change of the fault current according to the reactor capacity and the electrical burden of the superconducting element were confirmed through simulation. As a result, it was confirmed that the interruption time was delayed as the capacity of the reactor connected to the source side increased, but peak of the fault current decreased, the zero-crossing point generation time was shortened, and the electrical burden of the superconducting element decreased.
