Objectives : The aim of this study was to introduce the development process of Korean medicine health promotion program for short stature children that is suitable for applied at public health center. Methods : The draft of health promotion program was developed through literature search of previous similar programs and advice of several experts. A small conference targeted public health Korean medicine doctors was also held to introduce the developed program and discuss for improvements. Results : The details of 12-week of Korean medicine health promotion program for children growth are as follows: 4-week of taking herbal medicines (Yukmijihwang-tang or Yukgunja-tang), contactless counseling with Korean medicine doctor, self-care home kit consisting of Sogeonjung-tang tea leaf, Sogeonjung-tang with Cervi Parvum Cornu extract, ear acupressure stick, finger chuna manual, growth diary, and jump rope. Conclusions : This health promotion program can help to increase the height of children and self-esteem of children with short stature as well as decrease the stress of parents.

A 50-year-old Korean male tour guide without any medical or family history complained of left knee pain. After receiving umbilical cord blood injection treatment, the pain gradually worsened. After being diagnosed with septic arthritis in the left knee, arthroscopic lavage, debridement, antibiotic treatment, and routine rehabilitation therapy were performed, but the symptoms persisted. In the hospital, acupuncture, pharmacopuncture, acupotomy, Chuna manual therapy, and cupping therapy were performed in addition to the usual treatment for 59 days. To evaluate the patient's improvement, the numeric rating scale, EuroQol 5-dimension, pain disability index, and Lysholm knee scoring system were used. After treatment, the symptoms improved in all assessment tools, swelling, and range of motion of the joint. Through this study, it was found that complex Korean medical therapies may be effective for postoperative ankylosis in septic arthritis of the knee, and further studies are needed to clarify the therapeutic effect.

A 38-year-old Korean man without any other history was diagnosed with myelopathy due to a spinal dural arteriovenous fistula. Following embolization and high-dose steroid therapy, the patient was treated with complex Korean medical therapies including acupuncture, pharmacopuncture, electro-acupuncture, Chuna manual therapy, herbal medicine, and cupping therapy in addition to conventional treatment. To assess the patient's improvement, international standard for neurological classification of spinal cord injury, Korean version of modified Barthel index, functional independence measure, spinal cord independence measure III, walking index for spinal cord injury II, modified Ashworth scale were used. After treatment, the muscle strength and sensory function of the lower extremities were improved, and the spasticity was reduced, resulting in a rapid improvement in performance of daily activities. These results suggest that complex Korean medical therapies may be effective for myelopathy, and further clinical studies are needed to clarify their effects.

Objectives To determine the effectiveness of Tuina for temporomandibular joint disorder. Methods We searched 10 electronic databases (Pubmed, CNKI, EMBASE, Cochrane Library, KISS, KISTI, NDSL, RISS, KMBASE, DBpia) up to May 2017. We included randomized controlled trials (RCTs) using Tuina for temporomandibular joint disorder. The methodological quality of each RCT was assessed by the Cochrane risk of bias tool. Results 14 RCT studies were eligible in our review. 14 studies were divided into 4 groups, and meta-analysised. The meta-analysis of 6 studies showed favorable results for the use of Tuina. High risk of bias were observed in 9 studies. Conclusions Although there are favorable results with meta-analysis, our systematic review are highly dependent on the single source of Chinese electrical database, CNKI. Now limited evidence is available to support Tuina for temporomandibular joint disorder and further well-designed RCTs should be encouraged.

Multiple system atrophy is a neurodegenerative disease that causes diverse bodily dysfunctions (cerebellar, pyramidal, automatic, and urological, in any combination), as well as Parkinsonism. Patients with multiple system atrophy commonly display antecollis, a condition where the patient's head tilts forward more than 45 degrees. Despite its common occurrence in these patients, no current standardized therapies are effective for treating antecollis. In this study, Korean medicinal treatments, including Chuna manual therapy, pharmaco-acupuncture, bee venom acupuncture, acupuncture, herbal medicine, and moxibustion therapy, were administered to the patient over a 27-day period. After the treatment, assessments of the head position on the EPIS-PD scale (Part I) and at a standing position from the side (Part II) both revealed improvements. As the head flexion angle decreased, the patient's head posture improved, as determined by a decrease in angle from 80 degrees to 30 degrees in the upright, standing position. As a result, patients who previously were unable to walk without the support of walking frames could now roam freely and independently, with significant increases in both walking speed and distance. In essence, this study suggests that Korean medicine is an effective treatment for patients with multiple system atrophy who suffer from antecollis and gait disorders.

Cervical spondylotic myelopathy (CSM) is a severe disease that usually needs surgical treatment. We have treated two CSM patients with Korean traditonal medicine, which includes acupuncture, pharmacopuncture, herbal medicine and manual treatment (Chuna). For objective evaluation, we used Nurick's classification, JOA (Japanses Orthopedic Association) score, grip and release test and hand grasping power measurement. Post-treatment analysis has shown that grip and release test score and grasping power of two patients were both remarkably improved, along with the improvements on both Nurick's classification and JOA score. This study showed that Korean traditional medicine could be effective conservative treatment for CSM.

The purpose of this study is to report the effects of Korean medicine treatment in wrist drop patient with thoracic outlet syndrome. We treated the patient for 8 days using Korean medicine treatment such as herbal medicine, acupuncture, Chuna manual therapy and pharmacopuncture. Changes in the numerical rating scale (NRS), EuroQol five dimension (EQ-5D) index, and symptoms were measured for assessment. After 8 days hospitalization, NRS decreased from 5 to 3, EQ-5D index and the symptoms of the patient also were improved. In conclusion, this case shows that Korean medicine treatment can be an effective treatment for wrist drop with thoracic outlet syndrome.

Meralgia paresthetica is a rare femoral disease and various symptoms appear such as pain, numbness, and paresthesia in the anterolateral thigh due to entrapment of the lateral femoral cutaneous nerve. We treated the meralgia paresthetica patients with Korean medicine treatment including herbal medicine, acupuncture, Chuna manual therapy and pharmacopuncture during 12 days. Numerical rating scale (NRS), Euroqol five dimension (EQ-5D) index, and the changes of symptoms were measured for assessment. After 12 days inpatient treatment, NRS decreased from 7 to 4, EQ-5D index and the symptoms of the patient also were improved. In conclusion, this case shows Korean medicine treatment might be an effective treatment for Meralgia paresthetica.

The purpose of this study is to report the effects of Korean medicine treatment in baastrup's disease. We treated the patient for 34 days using Korean medicine treatment such as acupuncture, pharmacopuncture, herbal medicine, Chuna manual therapy and help motion style acupuncture treatment. Numerical rating scale (NRS), EuroQol five dimension (EQ-5D) index, Oswestry disability index (ODI), and lumbar range of motion (ROM) were used as evaluation tools for the state. NRS decrease from 5 to 3, and EQ-5D index, ODI, L-spine ROM were improved by the treatment. In conclusion, this case study shows that Korean medicine treatment can be effective for baastrup's disease.

This study reports on the effectiveness of Korean traditional medicine treatment on a patient with right hip pain caused by obturator nerve entrapment due to ganglion cyst. The patient had been misdiagnosed for a stenosis at the other hospital, but he got a different diagnosis this time with the examination. The patient was treated with Korean traditonal medicine, which includes pharmacopuncture, acupuncture, manual treatment (Chuna), and herbal medicine. Numerical rating scale (NRS), Oswestry Disability Index (ODI) and Euroqol five dimension (EQ-5D) index were used as a objective tool for evaluating the patient's symptoms. After treatment, NRS and ODI were decreased, while EQ-5D index was increased. This study suggests that a combined Korean traditional medicine may be effective in reducing symptoms related to obturator nerve entrapment.
