A Preliminary Study on the Hypoglycemic Effect of the Exo-Polymers Produced by Five Different Medicinal Mushrooms

  • The Hypoglycemic effect of exo-polymers (EPs) produced from submerged mycelial cultures of five types of mushrooms on streptozotocin (STZ)-induced diabetic rats were investigated in this study. The five experimental groups were fed with EPs (50 mg/kg body weight) for 7 days. Significant reduction in plasma glucose, total cholesterol (TC), and triglyceride (TG) levels were observed in rats fed with Lentinus edodes and Cordyceps militaris EPs. Plasma glucose and TC were also reduced by administration of Phellinus linteus EPs, but the TG level was not changed significantly. The EPs of three mushroom species also demonstrated a marked reduction in the level of plasma glutamate-pyruvate transminase (GPT). The result proves the hypoglycemic activity of EPs of three fungal group in STZ-induced diabetic rats and indicates their potential in the control of diabetes mellitus.

Production of Exo-Polymers by Submerged Mycelial Culture of Cordyceps militaris and Its Hypolipidemic Effect

  • Hypolipidemic effect of exo-polymers(EPs) form submerged mycelial culture of Cordyceps militaris was investigated in male Sprague-Dawley rats. For a dose-dependent study, EPs were administered at the level of 50-100 mg/kg body weight (BW) and the data was compared with the saline administered control group. A significant reduction of both the plasma total cholesterol (TC) and triglyceride (TG) was registered under the influence of EPs. It reduced the lowe density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol level as much as 40.5%. Levels of high density lipoprotein (HDL) choloesterol did not vary significantly within the different experimental groups, but the HDL: TC ratio showed consistently a high value with the increasing dose. The effects of cultural conditions (pH and temperature) in mycelial growth and EPs production were studied. Both the biomass and EPs were produced in a wide range of pH and temperature.

  • Korea Atomic Energy Research Institute has been developing a pool-type sodium-cooled fast reactor of the Prototype Gen-IV Sodium-cooled Fast Reactor (PGSFR). To assess the effectiveness of the inherent safety features of the PGSFR, the system transients during design basis accidents and design extended conditions are analyzed with MARS-LMR and the subchannel blockage events are analyzed with MATRA-LMR-FB. In addition, the invessel source term is calculated based on the super-safe, small, and simple reactor methodology. The results show that the PGSFR meets safety acceptance criteria with a sufficient margin during the events and keeps accidents from deteriorating into more severe accidents.

Micro-CT image-based reconstruction algorithm for multiscale modeling of Sheet Molding Compound (SMC) composites with experimental validation

  • This paper presents a multiscale modeling method for sheet molding compound (SMC) composites through a novel bundle packing reconstruction algorithm based on a micro-CT (Computed Tomography) image processing. Due to the complex flow pattern during the compression molding process, the SMC composites show a spatially varying orientation and overlapping of fiber bundles. Therefore, significant inhomogeneity and anisotropy are commonly observed and pose a tremendous challenge to predicting SMC composites' properties. For high-fidelity modeling of the SMC composites, the statistical distributions for the fiber orientation and local volume fraction are characterized from micro-CT images of real SMC composites. After that, a novel bundle packing reconstruction algorithm for a high-fidelity SMC model is proposed by considering the statistical distributions. A method for evaluating specimen level's strength and stiffness is also proposed from a set of high-fidelity SMC models. Finally, the proposed multiscale modeling methodology is experimentally validated through a tensile test.

민족종교에 나타난 한국 정신문화의 원류 (The Origin of Korea Mental Culture in Ethnical Religions)

  • 19~20세기 초 한국에는 다양한 종교운동이 분출하였다. 서구 기독교가 유입하여 크게 성장하였고, 전통 유교 역시 종교로서 변화를 모색했다. 동시에 새로운 종교들도 나타났는데 대표적인 것이 동학(천도교), 대종교, 증산교, 원불교의 민족종교이다. 대체로 이들 민족종교는 한국의 전통적 종교성과 연관된 한국 정신문화와 깊은 관련이 있다. 본 연구에서는 민족종교 속에 내재한 한국 정신문화를 추론해 보고자 한다. 이를 위해 먼저 한국 전통의 정신문화인 단군신화, 제천의식, 소도 등과 외래문화와 한국 정신의 융합을 추구한 최치원, 원효, 일연, 이황 등의 철학을 경천사상, 실천사상, 조화사상 등으로 정리하고, 이후 민족종교인 동학, 원불교, 증산교에서 이들이 어떻게 발현되는지를 추론하고자 한다.

Protective effects of Tat-DJ-1 protein against streptozotocin-induced diabetes in a mice model

  • A major feature of type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1DM) is hyperglycemia and dysfunction of pancreatic ${\beta}$-cells. In a previous study, we have shown that Tat-DJ-1 protein inhibits pancreatic RINm5F ${\beta}$-cell death caused by oxidative stress. In this study, we examined effects of Tat-DJ-1 protein on streptozotocin (STZ)-induced diabetic mice. Wild type (WT) Tat-DJ-1 protein transduced into pancreas where it markedly inhibited pancreatic ${\beta}$-cell destruction and regulated levels of serum parameters including insulin, alkaline phosphatase (ALP), and free fatty acid (FFA) secretion. In addition, transduced WT Tat-DJ-1 protein significantly inhibited the activation of $NF-{\kappa}B$ and MAPK (ERK and p38) expression as well as expression of COX-2 and iNOS in STZ exposed pancreas. In contrast, treatment with C106A mutant Tat-DJ-1 protein showed no protective effects. Collectively, our results indicate that WT Tat-DJ-1 protein can significantly ameliorate pancreatic tissues in STZ-induced diabetes in mice.

역상 액체크로마토그래피에서 벤젠 일치환체들의 머무름 메카니즘에 관한 연구 (제 2 보) (A Study of the Retention Mechanism of the Monosubstituted Benzenes in Reversed-phase Liquid Chromatography (II))

  • 역상 액체크로마토그래피에서 벤젠 일치환체들의 머무름 메카니즘과 머무름예측을 연구하기 위하여 크로마토 그래피 파라미터로 극성지표(P') 분자량(MW), 치환기 상수(${\pi}$ ) 및 분자간 연결지수$(^1{\chi}^{\nu})$를 머무름 데이터와 관련지어 상관관계를 조사하였다. 벤젠을 기존으로 하여 각 치환체의 크기인자와 비인 상대적 머무름$(log k'_S/k'_B)$과 각 치환체의 극성의비 $(P'_S/P'_B)$ 사이에는 상관관계가 있다. 치환기가 극성인 치환체들은 상관관계가 비교적 좋았으나 비극성 치환기를 갖는 치환체들은 분자량을 함께 고려함으로써 좋은 상관관계를 얻을 수 있다. 또한 상대적 머무름과 극성인자 및 분자량의 상관관계를 다변수 회귀분석으로 구하였다. 문헌적 머무름 자료와 소수성 파라미터로부터 유도된 치환기 상수(${\pi}$)와 분자간 연결지수$(^1{\chi}^{\nu})$ 간에는 메탄올의 이동상에서 가장 좋은 상관관계를 얻었다. $C_{18}$ 컬럼의 미반응된 실란올 기를 끝막음(end capping) 시키지 않은 컬럼에서는 이러한 상관관계가 감소되었다. 벤젠 일치환체들의 머무름과 관련지어 고려할 수 있는 파라미터는${\pi}$, P', $(^1{\chi}^{\nu})$ 및 MW 순으로 그 관련성이 감소됨을 알았다.
