Microscopic Identification of the Chinese Patent Medicine 'Geo Pung Ji Bo Dan' (거풍지보단의 현미감정 연구)

  • Geo Pung Ji Bo Dan (祛風至寶丹) is a Chinese patent medicine, which has been used for various purposes in Korea. Geo Pung Ji Bo Dan is composed 26 kinds of powdered crude drugs and has been used for palsy and mental disorder. For the identification of individual crude drugs in such powdery mixtures, microscope method may advantageously be used as it require only a small amount of specimens. In this study, it is demonstrated that the microscopic method is very effective for the identification of 26 crude drug ingredients in Geo Pung Ji Bo Dan.

  • 'Hwan So Dan(還少丹)' is Chinese patent medicine which has been used for shortage of vitality and asthenia in Korea. It consists of 14 kinds of powdered crude drugs. In powdered crude drugs, it is hard to identify each component by chemical analysis or morphological examination. However, the method of identification of powdered crude drugs has not been clearly established. For the identification of individual crude drugs in such powdery mixtures, microscopic method may advantageously be used as it requires only a small amount specimens. In this study, it is demonstrated that the microscopic method is very effective for the identification of 14 crude drug ingredients in Hwan So Dan.

  • 'Chung Shin Whan(靑神丸)' is a Chinese patent medicine, which has been used for stomachic disorder, acute and chronic indigestion, dyspepsia, vomiting and diarrhea in Korea. This medicine consists of 14 kinds of powdery mixtures, microscopic method be used advantageously as it requires only a small amount of specimens. In this paper, the effectiveness of this method is exemplified by the identification of the ingredients in "Chung Shin Whan' which contains 14 powdered crude drug ingredients.

  • Chinese crude drug 'JeonHo (前胡)' has been used mainly cough and dyspnea in respiratory infections. To clarify the botanical origin of 'JeonHo' in Korean market, the anatomical characterization of Anthriscus sylvestris, Angelica decursiva and Peucedanum praeruptorum were studied. As a result, it was clarified that 'JeonHo' in Korean market was the root of Peucedanum praeruptorum.

  • ‘Maig Moon Dong(麥問冬)’ is one of the chinese crude drugs used mainly to cure a cough and sputum, etc. With regard to the botanical origin of ‘Maig Moon Dong’, it has been considered to be Liriope species of Liliaceae, but there has not been studied pharmacognostically. To clarify the botanical origin of Maig Moon Dong, we studied on the anatomical characteristics of Liriope and Ophiopogon species growing wild in Korea i.e. L. platyphylla, L. spicata, O. jaburan, O. japonicus and Maig Moon Dong from Korea. As a result, the botanical origin of Maig Moon Dong from Korea was proved as Liriope platyphylla and L. spicata.

  • 'Cheong Wi Dan (淸胃丹)' is a Chinese patent preparation which has been used for various diseases in Korea. This preparation consists of 19 powder crude drugs. Cheong Wi Dan is used for catarrh of the gastrointestines, indigestion, a pain in the chest and nausea. The microscopic method is ve교 useful to identify individual gradients in powdery mixture because it requires only a small amount of specimens. In this study, it is demonstrated that the microscopic method is very useful for the identification of 19 crude drug ingredients included in Cheong Wi Dan.

  • Hyo Shim Dan Hwan (孝心丹丸) is a Chinese patent medicine which is used for neuralgia and palsy in Korea. This medicine consists of 15 kinds of powdered crude drugs. For the identification of individual ingredients in such powdery mixtures, microscopic method may advantageously be used, as it requires only small amount of specimens. In this study, the effectiveness of this method is exemplified by the identification of the ingredients in Hyo Shim Dan Hwan, which contains 15 powered crude drug ingredients.

  • Yeon Ju Hwan (蓮珠丸) is a Chinese patent medicine which has been used for improvement of blood circulation and thrombolysis in Korea. It consists of 28 kinds of powdered crude drugs. For the identification of individual ingredients in such powdery mixtures, microscopic method may advantageously be used, as it requires only small amount of specimens. And also it is considered a technique of choice since it takes only minimum time and requires a simple process. In this paper, the effectiveness of this method is exemplified by the identification of the ingredients in Yeon Ju Hwan, which contains 28 powdered crude drug ingredients.

  • 'Gu Maig(瞿麥)' is one of the Chinese crude drugs used mainly to cure a diuretic, gonorhoea and menostasis, etc. With regard to the botanical origin of 'Gu Maig', it has been considered to be Dianthus spp. of Caryophyllaceae, but there has not been studied pharmacognostically. To clarify the botanical origin of the "Gu Maig", the morphological and anatomical characteristics of the leaves and stems of Dianthus species growing in Korea, i.e. D. sinensis, D. superbus var. longicalycinus, D. repens, D. morii, D. superbus var. speciosus were compared. As a result, it was determined that 'Gu Maig' was the whole plant body of Dianthus sinensis and D. superbus var. longicalycinus.

For the identification of individual ingredients in such powdery mixtures, microscopic method may advantageously be used as it requires only a small amount of specimens. In this paper, effective of this method will be exemplified by the identification of the ingredients in Jeong We Dan which contains 14 powdered crude drug ingredients.
