Loneliness in School Age Children : Relationships with Locus of Control and Coping in the Peer-Alienation Situation (학령기 아동의 내외통제소재 및 또래-소외 상황에서의 대처행동과 외로움)

  • The subjects of this study on the relationships of locus of control, loneliness, and coping in the peer-alienation situation were 464 sixth grade children attending 4 elementary schools in Seoul. Analysis was by t-test, ANOVA, and Multiple Regression. Loneliness was higher in girls than in boys and in children with external locus of control. Passive coping in the peer-alienation situation was associated with higher levels of loneliness. Aggressive coping behavior in the peer-alienation situation was associated with higher levels of loneliness in boys. While both locus of control and passive coping behavior in the peer-alienation situation were predictive of loneliness in school age children, passive coping behavior was a stronger predictor of loneliness than locus of control.

The Relationships among Personal Characteristics, Home and School Environment, and Aggression of Korean-Chinese Children in Yanbin (연변 조선족 아동의 공격성과 개인적 특성, 가정환경 및 학교환경간의 관계)

  • This study investigated the relationships among personal characteristics(sex, self-concepts, depression, fear, internal locus of control), home environment(physical and psychological environment, parenting style, attachment to mother), school environment(teacher support, peer victimization), and Korean-Chinese children's aggression in Yanji, China. Two hundred and two(90 boys and 112 girls) 6th graders rated themselves on a questionnaire. Correlation analysis, and multiple regression were conducted using SPSS Window vers. 12. Alienation to mother, and overt and relational victimization by peers were positively related, and communication with mother was negatively related to children's proactive aggression. Alienation to mother, and overt victimization by peers were positively related, and communication with mother, support by teacher were negatively related to children's reactive aggression. Alienation to mother, and overt and relational victimization by peers were positively related, and communication with mother and support by teacher were negatively related to children's relational aggression. The factor with the greatest contribution to explaining the aggression of Korean-Chinese in Yanbin was the alienation to mother.

Analysis of Longitudinal Relation of Children's Social Withdrawal and Peer Alienation (아동의 사회적 위축과 또래소외 간의 종단적 관계)

  • The purpose of this study is to verify the causal relationship between social withdrawal and peer alienation among Korean children. The survey study participants were 2,110 children in 2nd, 3rd, 4th, and 5th grades. The 5-year longitudinal data (Korean Child and Youth Panel Survey; KCYPS) of 1st grade elementary school student cohort was used. Latent Growth Modeling was applied to analyze the causality over time of social withdrawal and peer isolation. The results revealed that the trajectories of children's social withdrawal decreased over time. Children's social withdrawal showed significant individual differences in terms of initial value and rates of change. The initial value and slope of children's social withdrawal had an effect on the peer alienation in the 3rd grade; however, there was no significant effect on the peer alienation in the 5th grade.

The Effect of Perceived Parental Abuse and Neglect and Peer Attachment on School Life Adjustment according to Children's Gender (성별에 따라 아동이 지각한 부모의 방임학대와 또래애착이 학교생활적응에 미치는 영향)

  • The purpose of this study was to analyze the effect of perceived parental neglect and abuse and peer attachment on school life adjustment according to children's gender. A total of 2,264 5th graders from the second Korea Child-Adolescent Panel Survey participated. The results were as follows: First, the boys had higher parental neglect and abuse scores than the girls, while the girls had higher peer attachment scores and higher school life adjustment scores than the boys. Second, every sub-element of school life adjustment was significantly negatively correlated with parental neglect and abuse regardless of the children's gender. Every sub-element of school life adjustment was significantly positively correlated with the 'communication' and 'trust' sub-elements of peer attachment regardless of the children's gender. In the case of the boys, the 'study activity' and 'peer relation' sub-elements of school life adjustment were significantly negatively correlated with the 'alienation' sub-element of peer attachment. For the girls, every sub-element of school life adjustment was significantly negatively correlated with the alienation sub-element of peer attachment. Finally, the factors of 'parental neglect and abuse', and the peer attachment sub-elements of 'communication', and 'trust' significantly predicted the boys' school life adjustment, while for girls, the significant predictors were 'parental neglect and abuse', 'communication', 'trust', and 'alienation'.

  • This research intends to identity problem and to suggest improvement through examples of the children for Reading Camp connected on Reading with Library Program for Children of Alienation in the National Library for Children and Young Adult and to investigate the way of effective the reading camp. The study investigated the operational practices of reading camp programs in 6 areas in the country. Further, it conducted a survey with children and librarians participated in the reading camp program. Based on the results, effective reading camp operation has been suggested and some suggestions have been made to improve administration strategies for reading camp.

The Effect of Mother's Attachment and Daily Stress on Children's Self-Concept and Depression in Multi-Ethnic Families (다문화가족 아동이 지각한 어머니 애착과 일상적 스트레스가 자아개념과 우울에 미치는 영향)

  • The purpose of this study to gather information on demographic statistics, children’s attachment to their mothers, and daily stress variants in order to assess their effects on child’s self-concept and depression within multi-ethnic familiy settings. A questionnaire survey was used to targeted 3rd, 4th, 5th and 6th graders in elementary schools in Jeonnam. A total of 158 children were surveyed. SPSS for Windows 12.0 was used to carry out descriptive, and comparative statistical analysis such as Cronbach's $\alpha$, correlations analysis, and a hierarchical regression analysis. Result showed that the most significant variant affecting self-concept among children from multi-ethnic families was attachment to their mothers. Other related individual variants were in order of importance, communication skills, feelings of alienation, and mothers’ nationalities. The variant most responsible for having an affect on depression among children from multi-entnic families was the attachment to their mothers. Other related individual variants were in order of importance, feelings of alienation, stress from peer relationships, mothers’ nationalities, and stress from economic and physical environments.

The Effects of Over-Parenting Behavior and Peer-Alienation on Adolescents' School Adjustment: The Mediating of Smartphone Dependency and Focus on Multi Group Analysis between Boys and Girls (과잉양육행동과 또래소외가 중학생의 학교생활적응에 미치는 영향: 스마트폰 의존경향성의 매개효과 및 성별에 따른 다집단분석)

  • This study investigates the effects of over-parenting behavior and peer-alienation on adolescents' school adjustment and explores the mediating effects of smartphone dependency on the above relations. The subjects were 1,882 first grade students in middle school selected from the 7th year data of the 2010 Korea Children and Youth Panel Survey (2010 KCYPS). Data were analyzed by descriptive statistics, Pearson's correlation, structural equational models, and Sobel test with SPSS 21.0 and Amos 18.0. The findings were as follows. First, there was no significant difference in the school adjustment according to gender. However, boys were higher in the perception of over-parenting behavior and peer-alienation, and girls were higher in smartphone dependency. Second, peer-alienation and smartphone dependency had negative impacts on the school adjustment. But over-parenting behavior had no significant effect on school adjustment. Third, smartphone dependency played a mediator role between over-parenting behavior and peer-alienation as well as the school adjustment. Fourth, there were no significant differences between boys and girls in the relations among over-parenting behavior, peer-alienation, smartphone dependency and school adjustment. But there was a slight difference in influence. The findings of this study suggest that interventions on how to use smartphone correctly are important for improving adolescents' school adjustment. In addition, gender differences in school adjustment should be considered for a better understanding.

A Comparison of Related Variables According to Children's Stress Types Using the Data Mining Method (데이터마이닝 기법을 활용한 아동의 스트레스 유형별 관련변수 비교)

  • This study compared a number of related variables according to children's stress types using the data mining method. The sample population was taken from the Korean Youth Panel Survey (KYPS) data (2688, sixth-grade elementary students). The results of the decision tree model revealed that : (1) Parental expectations in terms of study, life satisfaction, self-esteem, parental attachment, aggression, the spousal relationship, other cognition (one's own misdeeds), and study related worries were all related to parent stress. (2) Life satisfaction, study related worries, admitting one's own misdeeds, gender, other cognition (one's own misdeeds), aggression, the spousal relationship, and a sense of alienation in the school were all related to appearance stress. (3) Study related worries, parental expectations in terms of study, aggression, life satisfaction, self-esteem, parental attachment, satisfying parental expectations, parental attachment, and teacher attachment were all related to academic stress. (4) A sense of alienation in the school, mixing with peers in the school, aggression, self-esteem, other cognition (one's own misdeeds), study related worries, parental abuse, and life satisfaction were all significantly related to friend stress. These results suggested that children's diverse conditions should be considered according to the stress types if we are to understand and cope with these stress types more efficiently.

  • According as the modern form of the family becomes nuclearized, inevitable is the isolation of the family. The relationship of the neighborhood and the kinsmen are being dissolved, making the isolated and unsteady nuclear family. We need a community in the modern society, for we are facing a lot of social problems as the nuclear family. The problems are as follows ; the rearing of the children, the alienation of a woman and the woman's roles in the society. In addition to those problems, there are also such some other problems as the alienation of the old man and the social roles of them. That is to say, the community appeared as a kind of attempt to overcome the above-mentioned problems, Kibbutz may be itself called and enlarged family to function as one family even though it is not just a blood relationship. The American commune is a large family community as a group to overcome the alienation and solitude of the nuclear family. On the other hand, the urban community is the small-scaled and cooperative family to solve the problem that the modern nuclear family is a unit living solitarily and unsteadily. But in fact, even in such a community, there are much tension and conflict against its establishing purpose. In my opinion, if those communities have to surmount the tension and conflict which are derived from the process in a bid to overcome the troubles like the alienation and solitude of the nuclear family. The bond of family must be consolidated among all the members of the community. And then community may be co-existed with the traditional family as the alternative family in the future, which can supply the deficiency of the unsteady unclear family.

Pathways From the Experiences of Neglect to Adolescent Smart Phone Dependency: The Mediating Effects of Self Resilience and Alienation (방임경험이 청소년의 스마트폰 의존에 영향을 미치는 경로: 자아탄력성, 소외감의 매개효과)

  • Objective: The purpose of this study was to examine the effect of the experiences of neglect on adolescent smart phone dependency, exploring the pathways through self-resilience and alienation. Methods: This study utilized the 7th wave data from the Korean Child Youth Panel Survey(KCYPS), and the sample included 1,805 participants with no missing data. The data was analyzed using SPSS 23.0 and AMOS 23.0 programs. Results: First, the experiences of neglect directly affected adolescent smart phone dependency. Second, the experiences of neglect indirectly affect smart phone dependency partially mediated by self resilience and alienation. Conclusions: The ways to prevent adolescent smart phone dependency were discussed.
