The Current Status of Child Health and Our Task (아동건강현황과 과제)

  • The purpose of this study was to examine the realities of physical health conditions of children aged from 0 to 11 for the last decade. On the basis of the analyzed results, the pragmatic and policy issues are as follows : First, in the perspective of child development, studies of physical health are needed for the benefit of integrative development of children. Second, appropriate health education programs suitable for ages of children need to be developed and made compulsory for them. Third, the prohibition of adopting the ranking evaluation in physical education is to be required at the policy level. Forth, for sustainment of the health-related activities for children, the space or facilities specifically prepared for families to exercise and rest are needed. Lastly, new regulations and management systems are needed in order to resolve the safety problems with food for children.

Preschoolers' Compliance and Noncompliance : As a Function of Maternal Behavior, Child Gender and Age and Social Context (유아의 순응 및 불순응 행동 : 어머니의 양육행동, 아동의 성, 연령, 및 사회적 상황과의 관계)

  • This study examined preschoolers' compliance and noncompliance as it related to maternal behavior, child gender and age, and social context. The subjects were 213 preschool children in Seoul. Data were collected via questionnaires reported by mothers and teachers. The results of correlation analysis and a series of repeated measures ANOVA revealed that mothers' coercive parenting was associated with lower committed compliance and ignorant noncompliance. It was also found that the 5-year-olds studies showed higher committed compliance in moral situations whereas the 6-year-olds showed higher situational compliance in conventional situations. Noncompliance was more common among the 5-year-olds than the 6-year-olds. It was also found that girls exhibited higher compliance than boys in both moral and conventional contexts. The results were discussed in terms of a developmental perspective.

Convergent and Discriminant Validity of the Toddler Behavior Assessment Questionnaire in Korean Children (걸음마기 아동 기질척도의 타당도 연구)

  • Replication of the factor structure of the TBAQ(Toddler Behavior Assessment Questionnaire Goldsmith, 1988) in Korean 2-year-old children was examined by Multitrait Multimethod matrix of observed and reported child behavior. Participants included 113 toddlers and their mothers. Three factors comprising 63 items were identified and labeled as easy, difficult and fearful. On the Child Behavior Checklist(Achenbach & Edelbrock, 1983) difficult temperament was positively related to externalizing while fearful temperament was positively related to internalizing problems. Observation of inhibited child behavior in both unfamiliar social and nonsocial situations demonstrated a positive relationship to observed inhibition of fearful temperament. Easy temperament correlated negatively with both social inhibition and internal behavior problems. Results supported construct validity of TBAQ factors for Korean 2-year-old children.

Experiences of the Development of Parent-Adolescent Relationships among Korean Mothers

  • Purpose: This study was conducted to explore Korean mothers' experiences of the development of parent-adolescent relationships. Methods: The participants were 18 Korean parents of adolescents. Data were collected through in-depth interviews. The main question was, "Could you tell me about your experiences of developing a relationship with your adolescent child?" The data were analyzed using Strauss and Corbin's grounded theory methodology. Results: The central phenomena of the experiences of parent-adolescent relationships among Korean mothers were "trying to reduce my expectations, but not being able to" and "having no idea where to go". The major action/interaction strategies were "putting aside my desires and adapting to my child's needs" and "waiting and seeing at a distance". The consequences included "appreciating myself and my child at the same time". Conclusion: These findings indicate that mothers tried to adapt to their children's needs and to keep their children at a distance. Their efforts were influenced by advice from friends and family members. The findings of this study emphasize specific aspects of how Korean mothers experienced the process of developing respectful relationships with their children.

Relationships Between Learning-Related Social Skills and Literacy Development of Young Children (유아의 학습관련 사회적 기술과 문식성 발달과의 관계)

  • To examine relationships between learning-related social skills(LRSS) and literacy development a sample of 167 children aged 5-6 years were selected from 3 preschools in Seoul. Instruments for measuring LRSS were the cooperation, assertion, and self-control scales of the Social Skills Rating System (Gresham & Elliott, 1990) and the mastery behaviors scales of the Child Behavior Rating Scale (Bronson, et al. 1990). Literacy development was measured by the Concepts about Print(Woon, 1999), the Learning Readiness Scale(Korean Educational Development Institution 1998), and the Writing Development Scale(Lee, 1997). Teachers rated children's LRSS. Data were analyzed by mean, standard deviation, t-test, bivariate correlation, and regression analysis. LRSS correlated with children's literacy development. Mastery behaviors were the best predictor of literacy development.

Relationship between 5 Year Olds' Socioemotional Development and Daycare Experience and Daycare Quality (보육경험 및 보육의 질과 5세 유아의 사회.정서발달과의 관계)

  • The purpose of this study was to identify the relationships between early childhood socioemotional development and day care experience and daycare quality. The subjects were 116 children, age 5 years old, from 17 daycare centers. The teachers at the 17 daycare centers rated the quality of their facility while the mothers of the 116 children assessed their children's socioemotional development. Daycare experience was composed of: the time period, hours per day, and the child's starting age at enrollment in daycare. Daycare quality was measured by questionnaire developed by Park(1995). Children's socioemotional development was rated by K-CBCL (Oh et al. 1997). The results were as follows. First, starting daycare experience less than 2 years of age, attending more than 6 days per week, and attending more than 8 hours per day of daycare experience were negatively related with children's development. Second, quality of daycare such as child-centered curriculum, abundant interaction between teachers and parents, opportunity for continuing education of teachers, higher levels of rewards and incentives for teachers, and the provision of nutritious food were positively related to the children's development.

Effects of Cognitive Spectrum Program on the Development of Children from Low Income Families (Cognitive Spectrum 프로그램이 저소득가정 아동의 발달에 미치는 효과)

  • The purpose of this study was to develop the Cognitive Spectrum Program, a cognitive development program designed to increase children's IQ. The effect of this program was verified using a nonequivalent control group design. The subjects were 127 5-8 year old children. 56 children were assigned to the experimental group and 71 children to the control group. The experimental group participated in thirteen 90 min. long sessions. Quantitative analyses using SPSS WIN 18.0 and qualitative analyses were carried out. The results were as follows: First, this Cognitive Spectrum Program was shown to be effective in improving cognitive development. Second, the amount of improvement in cognitive development was found to be predictive of the amount of change in socioemotional development, demonstrating that attention deficits and overall problem behaviors were greatly reduced among the children whose IQ was improved by this program. This finding was also verified through qualitative analyses.

  • Purpose: Mucolipidosis type II (ML II), also known as I-cell disease is an autosomal recessive inherited disorder of lysosomal enzyme transport caused by a deficiency of the uridine diphosphate (UDP)-N-acetylglucosamine:lysosomal enzyme N-acetylglucosamine-1-phosphotransferase (GlcNAc-phosphotransferase). Clinical manifestations are skeletal abnormalities, mental retardation, cardiac disease, and respiratory complications. A severely and rapidity progressive clinical course leads to death before 10 years of age. Methods/Results: In this study we diagnosed three cases of prenatal ML II in two different at-risk families. We compared two procedures -biochemical analysis and molecular analysis - for the prenatal diagnosis of ML II. Both methods require an invasive procedure to obtain specimens for the diagnosis. Biochemical analysis requires obtaining cell cultures from amniotic fluid for more than two weeks, and would result in a late diagnosis at 19 to 22 weeks of gestation. Molecular genetic testing by direct sequence analysis is usually possible when mutations are confirmed in the proband. Molecular analysis has an advantage in that it can be performed during the first-trimester. Conclusion: Molecular diagnosis is a preferable method when a prompt decision is necessary.

Predictors of Small Bowel Transit Time for Capsule Endoscopy in Children with Inflammatory Bowel Disease

  • Purpose: The development of assistive devices has allowed for the performance of capsule endoscopy in children. Anticipating the capsule's transit time could affect the efficacy of the investigation and potentially minimize the fasting period. This study determined the predictors of small bowel transit time for small-bowel capsule endoscopy in children and adolescents with inflammatory bowel disease. Methods: We retrospectively examined children and adolescents with inflammatory bowel disease who underwent capsule endoscopy by the age 18 at a Japanese tertiary care children's hospital. Small bowel transit time predictors were analyzed using multiple regression with explanatory variables. Results: Overall, 92 patients, aged 1-17 years, with inflammatory bowel disease (63 Crohn's disease and 29 ulcerative colitis cases) were examined for factors affecting small bowel transit time. In the simple regression analysis, diagnosis, age, height, weight, serum albumin, general anesthesia, and small intestine lesions were significantly associated with small bowel transit time. In the multiple regression analyses, serum albumin (partial regression coefficient: -58.9, p=0.008), general anesthesia (partial regression coefficient: 127, p<0.001), and small intestine lesions (partial regression coefficient: 30.1, p=0.037) showed significant associations with small bowel transit time. Conclusion: Hypoalbuminemia, the use of general anesthesia for endoscopic delivery of the capsule, and small intestine lesions appeared to be predictors of prolonged small bowel transit time in children and adolescents with inflammatory bowel disease. Expecting the finishing time may improve examination with a fasting period reduction, which benefits both patients and caregivers.
