This study verifies the polyphenol and flavonoid contents of a dried extract, as well as its antioxidant effect and growth inhibitory effect on cancer cells to investigate the potential of yellow cherry tomatoes as a physiologically active food material. The polyphenol and flavonoid contents were determined as 10.96 ± 1.57 and 4.12 ± 0.41 mg/g, respectively. The antioxidant activity was confirmed by measuring DPPH and ABTS radical scavenging ability, and RC50-the concentration that reduces free radicals by 50%-were determined as 490.83 ± 17.35 ㎍/mL and 355.90 ± 0.79 ㎍/mL, respectively. The dried extract showed no cytotoxicity with respect to normal hepatocytes (Chang) and no growth inhibitory activity with respect to A549 lung cancer cells, whereas dried extract showed growth inhibitory activities of 15.2% and 18.4% with respect to human cervical adenocarcinoma (HeLa) and human hepatocellular carcinoma (HepG2) cells, respectively, when treated with a concentration at 100㎍/mL. The results of this study confirm the potential of yellow cherry tomatoes as a physiologically active food material by verifying their antioxidant activity and their growth inhibitory activity with respect to cervical and liver cancer cells.
This study was performed to analyze various antioxidants, to evaluate the antioxidative activities, and to measure the protective effect for gap junction intercellular communication (GJIC) to assess the functional potency of the cherry tomato. The ascorbic acid, lycopene, and ${\beta}-carotene$ were measured at $503.4{\pm}9.6$, $39.7{\pm}1.5$, and $7.4{\pm}0.3$ mg/100 g d.w., and ${\alpha}-$, ${\beta}+{\gamma}-$, ${\delta}-tocopherol$ contents were measured at $8.3{\pm}0.1$, $1.7{\pm}0.0$, and $0.1{\pm}0.0$ mg/100 g d.w., respectively. Cherry tomato extract using hexane/acetone/EtOH (2:1:1, CTE) exhibited a ABTS radical scavenging activity with an $IC_{50}$ value of $48.83{\pm}0.30\;{\mu}g/mL$. The cherry tomato protected against the inhibition of GJIC induced by $H_2O_2$ in WB-F344 rat liver epithelial cells, and the reduction in phosphorylated Cx43 was most clearly correlated with the concentration of CTE. These results demonstrated that the cherry tomato harbors a wealth of potent antioxidants and might be protect human body against the inhibition of the GJIC by toxic components.

The present systematic review and meta-analysis were accomplished to understand the effects of tart cherry juice consumption on body composition and anthropometric measures. Five databases were searched using relevant keywords from inception to January 2022. All clinical trials investigating the effect of tart cherry juice consumption on body weight (BW), body mass index (BMI), waist circumference (WC), fat mass (FM), fat-free mass (FFM), and percentage body fat (PBF) were included. Out of 441 citations, 6 trials that enrolled 126 subjects were included. Tart cherry juice consumption significantly did not reduce BW (weighted mean difference [WMD], -0.4 kg; 95% confidence interval [CI], -3.25 to 2.46; p = 0.789; GRADE = low), BMI (WMD, -0.07 kg/m2; 95% CI, -0.89 to 0.74; p = 0.857; GRADE = low), FM (WMD, 0.21 kg; 95% CI, -1.83 to 2.25; p = 0.837; GRADE = low), FFM (WMD, -0.12 kg; 95% CI, -2.47 to 2.27; p = 0.919; GRADE = low), WC (WMD, 1.69 cm; 95% CI, -1.88 to 5.27; p = 0.353; GRADE = low), and PBF (WMD, 0.18%; 95% CI, -1.81 to -2.17; p = 0.858; GRADE = low). Overall, these data suggest that tart cherry juice consumption has no significant effect on BW, BMI, FM, FFM, WC, and PBF.
During the production of grape wine, the formation of thick leathery pellicle/bacterial cellulose (BC) at the airliquid interface was due to the bacterium, which was isolated and identified as Gluconacetobacter hansenii UAC09. Cultural conditions for bacterial cellulose production from G. hansenii UAC09 were optimized by central composite rotatable experimental design. To economize the BC production, coffee cherry husk (CCH) extract and corn steep liquor (CSL) were used as less expensive sources of carbon and nitrogen, respectively. CCH and CSL are byproducts from the coffee processing and starch processing industry, respectively. The interactions between pH (4.5-8.5), CSL (2-10%), alcohol (0.5-2%), acetic acid (0.5-2%), and water dilution rate to CCH ratio (1:1 to 1:5) were studied using response surface methodology. The optimum conditions for maximum BC production were pH (6.64), CSL (10%), alcohol (0.5%), acetic acid (1.13%), and water to CCH ratio (1:1). After 2 weeks of fermentation, the amount of BC produced was 6.24 g/l. This yield was comparable to the predicted value of 6.09 g/l. This is the first report on the optimization of the fermentation medium by RSM using CCH extract as the carbon source for BC production by G. hansenii UAC09.
This study was carried out to investigate the effectiveness of the Lycopene cultivar of cherry tomatoes as a functional food and food material by measuring the total polyphenol and flavonoid content, anti-oxidative and anticancer activity. The contents of polyphenol and flavonoid were $12.28{\pm}1.78mg$ and $3.89{\pm}0.54mg$ per one g of dried cherry tomatoes respectively. The anti-oxidative activity of the cherry tomato was verified by measuring ${\alpha}$-${\alpha}$-diphenyl-${\beta}$-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) radical scavenging activity (DSA), 2,2'-azinobis-3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulphonic acid (ABTS) radical scavenging activity (ASA) and ferric reducing antioxidant power (FRAP). 50% of radical scavenging concentrations ($IC_{50}$) of DSA and ASA were $328.64{\pm}4.190{\mu}g/mL$ and $350.61{\pm}3.300{\mu}g/mL$ respectively. FRAP value was $26.92{\pm}0.68{\mu}mol$$Fe^{2+}/g$. The effects of the cherry tomato extract on the growth of a normal lung cell (Hel299), lung cancer cell (A549), cervical cancer cell (HeLa) and a liver cancer cell (HepG2) were investigated using MTT assay. The cherry tomato extract showed a significantly strong growth inhibition effects against A549 cell and $IC_{50}$ was $375.46{\pm}33.670{\mu}g/mL$. The extract also inhibited growths of HeLa and HepG2 cells weakly. In this study we found that Lycopene cultivar of cherry tomato had anti-oxidative activity and strong inhibition effect against lung cancer cells. These results indicate that the Lycopene cultivar of cherry tomato would be a functional food and food material.
In order to help the preservation of the cherry tomato and unshiu orange, antimicrobial paper incorporating grapefruit seed extract and zeolite was applied to the package. Cherry tomato and unshiu orange were packed in a box (38x25x20 cm) attached with antimicrobial paper and then stored respectively at $5^{\circ}C$. During the storage, weight loss, pH total acidity, soluble solid content microbial load and decay ratio were measured as quality indices. pH increase in cherry tomato was observed until 20 days, and decreased with litle difference between the packaging treatments thereafter pH and total acidity decrease in unshiu orange were shown till 30 days, and abrupt change was revealed by 40 days. This was due to physiological disorders. The microbial loads of total aerobic bacteria, and yeast/mold count were suppressed during storage by the box packaging incorporated with antimicrobial agents, which also contributed to reducing the decayed cherry tomato and unshiu orange. Antimicrobial paper was useful fur the reduction of microbial load in cherry tomato and unshiu orange pear without other quality deterioration.

Physicochemical properties of flowering cherry (Prunus yedoensis, Prunus sargentii, Prunus lannesiana, Prunus cerasus) fruits were evaluated. The moisture contents were the highest in fruits of Prunus cerasus; crude protein ranged from $0.19{\sim}1.49%$ and crude fat ranged from $1.00{\sim}2.66%$. The fruits of Prunus lannesiana included higher contents of crude ash compared with those of other cultivars. The mineral contents of Prunus lannesiana fruits were the highest in Ca, K, Mg, Fe, and Mn. The amino acid contents of only methionine was the highest in fruits of Prunus sargentii (1.64 mg/L). Other amino acids were the highest in fruits of Prunus cerasus. The Brix value was the highest in fruits of Prunus yedoensis, followed by fruits of Prunus sargentii, Prunus lannesiana, and Prunus cerasus. Organic acid contents ranged from $3.42{\sim}4.18%$. Anthocyanin contents were the highest in fruits of Prunus sargentii in methanol extract. Therefore oriental cherry commensurates with development of nature pigment and functional foods. Especially, Prunus cerasus was greater than other cultivars.
The fruits of sweet cherry are highly appreciated by the consumer due to their precocity and quality, such as their sweetness, color and sourness. In this study, the hot-water extract and its sequential organic solvent fractions were prepared from domestic Napoleon sweet cherry (Prunus avium L.) to investigate antimicrobial and antioxidant activity. The hot-water extract contained about 40% sugars, and the solvent fraction yields for hexane, ethylacetate (EA), butanol, and water residue were 0.01%, 3.45%, 16.30%, and 80.24%, respectively. Contents of total polyphenol and total flavonoid of the fractions were 1.24~5.24%, and 0~3.76%, respectively. Among the fractions, EA fraction showed the highest total polyphenol and total flavonoid concentrations. Evaluation of antimicrobial activity of the extract and fractions revealed that EA fraction and butanol fraction contained strong antibacterial activity against Listeria monocytogenes, Staphylococcus aureus, and Salmonella typhimurium with minimal inhibitory concentration (MIC) of 0.5~1.0 mg/mL. But the extract and fractions tested were not active to Pseudomonas aeruginosa. In a while, only hexane fraction showed anti-Candida activity with 0.5~1.0 mg/mL of MIC. The fraction showed strong activity against different multi-antibiotics resistant strains such as C. albicans CCARM 14020. Antioxidative activity assay showed that EA fraction has a strong DPPH scavenging activity and a reducing power. The $IC_{50}s$ of vitamin E and EA fraction were 15.5 and $195.5\;{\mu}g/mL$, respectively. Our results suggest that the fruit of P. avium L. has high potentials with anti-Candida and antioxidative activity.

In order to help the preservation of the cherry tomatoes, antimicrobial paper incorporating grapefruit seed extract and zeolite was applied to packaging fruits. The fruits were packed with a paper bag of 15.5${\times}$24 cm and then stored at 1$0^{\circ}C$. During the storage, weight loss, pH, total acidity, soluble solid content, microbial load and decay were measured as quality indices. Steady weight loss due to the transpiration was observed to slightly increase the solid content during the storage with little difference between the packaging treatments. There were little change in pH and acidity of the stored fruits. The microbial loads of total aerobic bacteria, and yeast/mold counts were significantly suppressed during 10 day storage by the antimicrobial paper packaging, which also contributed to reducing the decayed fruits observed after 15 days.
