Game shows are capable of grabbing students' attention in a lecture, and at the same time offers much delight to students to learn in a more interesting and entertaining way. A mind game was developed and incorporated into the teaching of basic organic chemistry course at the Universiti Malaysia Terengganu. The modified brainteaser game is comprised of a set of problems associated with vocabulary or concepts in basic organic chemistry, whereby students were required to solve within a stipulated time frame. Students' attitude changes were then evaluated with the administration of Attitude toward the Subject of Chemistry Inventory Version 2 (ASCIv2) questionnaire. The result of this study revealed that the intervention group experienced a significant change in attitude towards the course as compared to the control group. The intervention group also experienced a positive learning environment, resulting in an increased academic performance and interest.
Chemistry focuses on explaining macroscopic phenomena at the microscopic level with particles, such as atoms or molecules. Explanation using particles are bound to be considered as abstract by students, because it was dealing with invisible objects. For that reason, the science national curriculum presented to middle school students the explanation of the units related to the composition of matter. Therefore, understanding about the composition of matter in middle school students becomes an important basis for learning of chemistry, and it is necessary to investigate their understanding about composition of matter. In this study, students' understanding about 'composition of matter' region, which is first presented to middle school students, was confirmed at an overall level. In this line, this study analyzed the results of the items in the composition of matter region, and analyzed items were used in the National Assessment of Educational Achievement (NAEA) from 2015 to 2019. We analyzed the 9 items presented in the NAEA according to the response rate of options and response rate distribution curve, and explained the characteristics of understanding derived by each achievement level were examined. According to the analyzed results by dividing the conceptions about elements, atoms, and ions, students above the proficient achievement-level had scientific conceptions overall, but students below the basic achievement-level had inconsistent or naive conceptions. Based on the results for each item, this study discussed some implications to be considered or to be improved on teaching-learning for 'composition of matter'.
This study examined the characteristics of the National Assessment of Educational Achievement (NAEA) in Science according to gender. It investigated gender achievement differences in the science section of the 2010 NAEA, the ratio of gender difference in achievement, the ratio of correct answers within each content domain and behavioral domain, and the items which showed high differences between males and females. The results indicate first, that, for 9th graders, females outperformed males in academic achievement in science. Second, with respect to the ratio of correct answers, males outperformed females in the advanced and below basic level groups, but females outperformed males in intermediate level groups. Third, females outperformed males in knowledge and inquiry in the behavior domains, and in chemistry and biology in the content domains. Fourth, an analysis of the items showing the largest gender gap indicated that males outperformed females in interpreting data, while females outperformed males in the items concerned with daily life and items related to the memorization of rules. This research on gender differences in science will allow teachers to complement the weaknesses of students when they study science, and support improved instructional methods in science.
In this study, we analyzed the causes of decrease in the number of students taking Chemistry ? in the College Scholastics Ability Test (CSAT) by analyzing the adequacy of the Chemistry I question in the CSAT and the recognition survey of students and teachers about the Chemistry I choice. We analyzed some questions in Chemistry I of the CSAT from the year 2014 to 2016. The questions were analyzed to determine whether they were appropriate to the curriculum content, achievement standard, and achievement level. The target of the survey for perception was 452 senior high school students and 68 science teachers. The result of the study showed that the questions in Chemistry I are somewhat difficult compared to the depth and achievement level required by the curriculum, and it also requires mathematical thinking ability. Students recognized the mathematical thinking and complex mathematical skills are needed to solve problems in Chemistry I. Teachers also thought that the choice of Chemistry I is unfavorable in aspect of meeting the minimum academic ability standard, and accordingly, they did not actively recommend students to take Chemistry I. Moreover, most of the teachers recognized that it is necessary to improve the direction of writing questions for Chemistry I. Therefore, setting questions that can be solved using chemical knowledge, not mathematical ability need to be addressed.

The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of Small-Scale Chemistry (below SSC) Lab Program with respect to students' extroversions and introversions. For this study, an SSC Lab Program was developed on the basis of analyzing the chemistry part of the high school science textbook in the 7th curriculum. The experimental group received SSC experiment lessons, and the comparison group received traditional experiment lessons based on textbook for 5 class periods. Afterwards, students were grouped into extrovert and introvert according to their personality test scores, the differences between the two groups were investigated using 2-way ANCOVA. Prior to the instructions, three test regarding the scientific attitude and academic self-efficacy were administered. After the instructions, the scientific attitude, academic self-efficacy, and students' perceptions on SSC Lab Program were examined. The scores in mid-term and end-of-term science exams were used as pre-test and post-test science achievement scores, respectively. Two-way ANCOVA results revealed that there were effects in the score of the academic achievement score, but there was no interactive effect between extroversion/introversion and treatment. In addition, a significant interactive effect was found in the scientific attitude, but there was no significant main effect. It was interpreted that extrovert students had many opportunities in SSC experiment classes and were able to experiment with initiative, but introverts would feel the responsibility and the pressure owing to the small group experiment. There were no main and interactive effects in the score of the academic self-efficacy test. Survey of students' perceptions on SSC Lab Program revealed that both over 90% extrovert and introvert students showed very positive perceptions in 'three-membered small group composition,' 'understanding,' and 'convenience' items. It was found to be a very different perception between extrovert and introvert students in 'comparing result with other students' item.
The purpose of this study was to examine the effect of Small-Scale Chemistry(SSC) lab program on the academic self-efficacy and the science-related affective domain of 11th grade science-majored students. For this study, a SSC lab program was developed on the basis of analyzing the textbook of high school chemistry I in the 7th curriculum, and the experimental group was received SSC experiment lessons(SSC group), and the comparison group was received traditional experiment lessons. After students were grouped high and low level according to the students' prior science achievement score, the differences between the two groups were investigated using 2-way ANCOVA. From the result of this study, we found that the SSC lab program was more effective than the traditional Large-Scale lab program based on the textbook in academic self-efficacy. And the scores of interest toward science-related careers and creativity for the SSC group, which are subcategories of science-related affective domain were significantly higher than those for the comparison group. In students' perceptions on the SSC lab program, majority of students thought that the SSC lab program was convenient, effective and interesting.
This study aims to elucidate the relationship between physics and mathematics to predict achievement for the college level of engineering courses. For the last 4 years, more than 3,000 engineering college freshmen of this study took the diagnostic tests on three subjects, which were physics, mathematics, and chemistry before enrollment. We studied how strongly these diagnostic scores can predict each general college course grades. The correlation between the physics diagnostic scores and the course grades in physics was .264, which was significantly lower than the correlation between the mathematics scores and the physics grades, .311. This stronger prediction of the mathematical diagnostic scores for the general course grades was not found when predicting the grades in chemistry. We therefore conclude that mathematical preparation can unexpectedly predict future achievement in physics better than physics preparation due to the academic interrelationships between mathematics and physics.
In this study, the effects of writing a weekly report on the students' self-directed learning, the attitudes toward science, and the academic achievements were examined. Two hundred and three students, second graders of a high school participated. Experimental group performed writing a weekly report, while the comparative group performed regular science lessons. The results of this study are as follows: First, MSLQ test showed that there was statistically significant difference in the self-directed learning skills(p<.05). For sub-factors of motivation region, such as internal goals, extrinsic goals, learning beliefs, task value, and self-efficacy and for sub-factors of learning strategy region, such as meta-cognition, peer learning, time management, critical thinking, and demonstrations showed statistically significant results. Second, TOSRA test showed that there was no statistically significant difference in the attitudes toward science (p>.05). However, for sub-factors, such as scientific inquiry and joy to science class showed statistically significant results. Third, there was no statistically significant difference in the academic achievement in Chemistry I class (p>.05). However, top and low achievement level showed statistically significant results.
The chemistry has the academic system in which a concept is jointly developed into the single strain, so the contents of the chemistry I II of the high school are very important in the connection of the general chemistry in the university. At this moment, it is possible for high school graduates to be accepted into science or engineering majors without taking the chemistry II. These the highest intensive election subject cause problems of differences in level of understanding and difficult of quality educations. In this study, we have analyzed similarity between the contents of the chemistry I II and the general chemistry. We also analyzed the cognition level of students without taking the chemistry II in understanding the general chemistry level classes. We found that the high school level chemistry I and II introduced about 27% and 62% of the essential concepts required for the general chemistry, respectively. In a case of M university in Chonnam, about 70% of students in the general chemistry classes have no exposure to the chemistry II in their high schools, causing difficulty of understanding new subjects due to their insufficient concepts for classes. The lack of knowledge caused lowering of learning achievement and decrease of interests in chemistry.
