Ginkgo trees have long been planted in Korea as roadside trees and ornamental trees, but the wood was seldom used except some utilization f3r small artifacts. Soaring prices of imported wood and future uncertainty about long-term supply of foreign woods have stimulated research on value-added utilization of less-utilized domestic wood resources such as Ginkgo wood. The processing properties of Ginkgo wood were investigated to determine its utilization potential in this study, and the results of treatability, drying characteristics, gluability, paintability, bending properties, chemical discoloration characteristics were presented.
In this work is induced a new topology of solutions of chemical equations by virtue of point-set topology in an abstract stoichiometrical space. Subgenerators of this topology are the coefficients of chemical reaction. Complex chemical reactions, as those of direct reduction of hematite with a carbon, often exhibit distinct properties which can be interpreted as higher level mathematical structures. Here we used a mathematical model that exploits the stoichiometric structure, which can be seen as a topology too, to derive an algebraic picture of chemical equations. This abstract expression suggests exploring the chemical meaning of topological concept. Topological models at different levels of realism can be used to generate a large number of reaction modifications, with a particular aim to determine their general properties. The more abstract the theory is, the stronger the cognitive power is.
Cephalosporium acremonium is a filamentous microorganism producing cephalosporin C. The morphological differentiation of C. acremonium in submerged culture is closely related with the rheological properties of culture broth and production of cephalosporin C. In this study, the rheological and morphological properties of culture broth of C. acremonium were investigated. In the seed broths of shake-flask and fermenter culture, the Herschel-Berkley equation was in excellent agreement with experimental results in the whole range of shear rate. In the seed broths of shake-flask culture, morphological differentiation into arthrospores affected to changes of apparent viscosity. But results in the fermenter culture, morphological factors such as mean hyphal thickness and the number of tips gave more effect on changes of apparent vitacosity than differentiation into arthrospores. Overall, it suggested that the morphological parameters measured by image analysis can be used as a good parameter to indicate the rheological properties of culture broth of C. acremonium M25.
Changes on soil physical and chemical properties following the forest fire in Kosung area in Kangwon province were examined. Twenty seven sampling plots[16 burned (8 low intensity fire, 8 high intensity fire) and 11 unburned plots] from Pinus densiflora community were chosen and soil samples from three depths(0-5, 5-15, 15-25 cm) under the forest floor were collected. Forest fire in the area affected soil chemical properties. Soil pH, available phosphorus, base saturation, K, Ca, and Mg on the surface soil(0-5cm) in the burned areas compared with the unburned areas were increased, while soil properties on the subsurface soil(5-25 cm) were not changed. Organic matter, total nitrogen, available phosphorus, and exchangeable cations following the high in tensity fire on the surface soil were generally lower than those in the low intensity fire areas. This indicates that these nutrients on high intensity fire areas may be volatilized. The results suggest that the fire effects on soil chemical properties were confined mainly to the surface soil and were different between the high and the low intensity fire types.

The effects of particle content, size and shape on the thermal conductivity (k) and adhesion properties of thermally conductive, pressure-sensitive adhesives (PSAs) were investigated. The matrix resins were thermally crosslinkable, 2-ethylhexyl acrylic polyol and ultraviolet (UV)-curable, random copolymer consisting of acrylic oligomer and various acrylates. We found that k increased with increasing diameter and particle aspect ratio, and was further enhanced due to the reduction of the interfacial thermal barrier when the coupling agent, which increases the adhesion between particles and the matrix resin, was used. On the other hand, adhesion properties such as peel strength and tack of the thermally crosslinkable resin decreased sharply with increasing particle content. However, for UV curable resin, increased particle addition inhibited the decrease in adhesion properties.

The effects of fillers on the mechanical and thermal properties of glass/novolac composites have been studied. The matrix polymer and reinforcement were novolac type phenolic resin and milled glass fiber, respectively. Three different fillers, such as calcium carbonate, aluminum oxide, and wood powder were used for glass fiber reinforced plastic(GFRP) manufacture. Gravity, moisture content, tensile and flexural strength were measured to analyze the mechanical properties of GFRP and the final composites was burned in the electronic furnace at $1000^{\circ}C$ to confirm thermal properties GFRP containing aluminium oxide shows the highest thermal stability with 32% of weight loss at $1000^{\circ}C$ for one hour. GFRP containing calcium carbonate shows the maximum flexural strength (146 MPa), but that containing wood powder dose the highest tensile strength (65 MPa). Conclusively, we found that the characteristics of final composites strongly depend on several factors, such as types of materials, contents and chemical affinity of fillers. Therefore, it is very important to set up the combination of fillers for GFRP manufacturing to improve both mechanical and thermal properties at the same time.

Chemical characteristics and their interrelationships of 156 soils included by 74 sandy loam and 82 loam soils collected from plastic film house in Chungbuk area were investigated from 1998 to 2001. Seventeen chemical properties including pH, organic matter (OM), electrical conductivity (EC), inorganic nitrogen, available phosphorus, exchangeable cations, CEC, etc., were analyzed by correlation, standardized partial regression coefficient, and principal factor analysis. Standardized partial regression coefficients of chemical properties were estimated to determine the degree of contribution of EC and OM contents in soils. Principal factor analysis was applied to classify the studied chemical properties into different groups having similar chemical properties. The pH of experimental soils ranged from 4.24 to 7.14 and 4.95 to 7.35 for loam and sandy loam soils, respectively. The EC of soils varied from 0.93 to $15.65dS\;m^{-1}$ for loam and $0.91{\sim}22.30dS\;m^{-1}$ for sandy loam soils, respectively with significant differences among them. The EC measured by 1:5 $H_2O$ dilution method and saturation method were significantly related with 8.163 and 8.599 as the slopes of regression equation for loam and sandy loam soils, respectively. These slopes more than 8.0 in this regression equation was higher than the slope of 5.0 that is estimated from dilution coefficient suggesting that EC measured by 1:5 dilution method might be erratic. The standardized partial regression coefficient of different chemical properties for the estimation of EC was in the order of $NO_3{^-}$ > $Cl^-$ > OM > exchangeable Mg for loam soils and $NO_3{^-}$ > exchangeable Mg > $Cl^-$ for sandy loam soils. Contribution order of the chemical properties based on standardized partial regression coefficient differed 1:5 dilution method and saturation method, indicating that different chemical compounds might be present in the extract solutions of these two methods. Consequently the measurement of EC by saturation method was thought be still better for estimation of chemical property because accuracy of EC measurement by 1:5 dilution method can't be improved by any specific coefficient for adjustment of EC. Regardless of differences in soil textures and extraction methods, correlation coefficients between EC and the other chemical properties were routinely in the order of $NO_3{^-}$ > $Cl^-$ > degree of base saturation > exchangeable Mg > exchangeable Ca > $SO{_4}^{2-}$. The principal factor analysis revealed four factor groups of the chemical properties studied. The groups for sandy loam were as follows; ; 1. salt components, 2. soil reaction components, 3. fixed and adsorption components, 4. CEC components. The groupings of loam soils were similar to sandy loam except that exchangeable Na substituted the CEC of sandy loam.

In this study, aliphatic polyketone (PK)/chopped carbon fiber (CCF) composites with various CCF contents were prepared using a modular intermeshing co-rotating twin screw extruder, and their mechanical and thermal properties such as tensile, flexural, and impact strength and thermal conductivity were investigated. The amount of CCF was increased from 0 to 50 wt%. The tensile and flexural strength of the PK/CCF composites increased as the CCF content increased, but the elongation at break and impact strength was lower than that of pure PK. Thermal properties such as heat distortion temperature and thermal conductivity increased as the CCF content increased. Morphological observations revealed that fiber orientation and interface adhesion between the PK and the CCF in the PK/CCF composites were formed due to the twin screw extrusion, which contributed to improving the mechanical and thermal properties of the composites.

The long-term changes in the soil properties are closely related to the policy direction and the national program for the soil management. In this study, chemical properties of paddy soils in Jeonnam province were investigated at four-year interval since 1999 and the factors affecting change of chemical properties were analyzed in relation to the soil management policies. Chemical fertilizers supplied to Jeonnam province reduced by 57% in 2013 as compared with 1999, and the ratio of Jeonnam province to the national fertilizer supply gradually decreased to 14.1% in 2013 from 17.6% in 1999 due to national policies to reduce use of chemical fertilizers in the 2000s. In the chemical analysis of paddy soils in Jeonnam province, pH value tended to increase gradually within the optimal range. Available phosphate and exchangeable potassium content were always higher than the optimal range and showed no significant difference since 1999. Organic matter, exchangeable calcium and available silicate content were found to be lower than average content in the whole country as well optimal range for rice cultivation in 1999, but were higher than average content in the whole country and optimal range in 2011 because of faster rate of increase in Jeonnam province than the other region since the mid-2000s. The cause of increase in organic matter, exchangeable calcium and available silicate contents is considered to be the increased use of green manure crops and by-products fertilizer as an alternatives for conventional application of chemical fertilizers and soil amendment such as silicate fertilizer for agronomic control of the disease and insect pest in rice cultivation of environmentally-friendly agriculture.
