  • Alzheimer's disease is a chronic neurodegenerative disorder with no curative treatment. The commercially available drugs, which target acetylcholinesterase, are not satisfactory. The aim of this study was to investigate the cholinesterase inhibitory activity of Solenostemma argel aerial part. Eight compounds were isolated and identified by NMR: kaempferol-3-O-glucopyranoside (1), kaempferol (2), kaempferol-3-glucopyranosyl($1{\rightarrow}6$)rhamnopyranose (3) p-hydroxybenzoic acid (4), dehydrovomifoliol (5), 14,15-dihydroxypregn-4-ene-3,20-dione (6), 14,15-dihydroxy-pregn-4-ene-3,20-dione-$15{\beta}$-D-glucopyranoside (7) and solargin I (8). Two of them (compounds 2 and 3) could inhibit over 50 % of butyrylcholinesterase activity at $100{\mu}M$. Compound (2) displayed the highest inhibitory effect against acetylcholinesterase (AChE) and butyrylcholinesterase (BChE) with a slight selectivity towards the latter. Molecular docking studies supported the in vitro results and revealed that (2) had made several hydrogen and ${\pi}-{\pi}$ stacking interactions which could explain the compound potency to inhibit AChE and BChE.

  • Background and objective: Vietnam is prioritizing agricultural production for food export capacity in all national policies. As a result, for three decades, its agriculture has been making quite many remarkable achievements. Methods: The most successful one is that the nation has become one of the world's leading rice exporters and ensures its national food security. Through these endeavors, the Mekong River Delta (MRD), in particular, has emerged as a key region in ensuring national food security and rice export. Results: The new era can now see Vietnamese agriculture turning to place special emphasis on commodity quality and the improvement of the living environment. This is evidenced, for example, by the phenomenon that the MRD, as a rice basket of the whole country, is making moves back to nature-based agriculture with attempts to restore the natural ecology, including preserving and restoring local traditional rice seeds, adopting natural farming practices and minimizing the use of chemical fertilizers and pesticides. Conclusion: The case studies of nature-based farming practices in the MRD indicate that, while the national agriculture is generally developing large-scale production, the small-scale farming in the region, integrated with tourist and educational activities on-site, is meeting the demands of a highly potential domestic niche market. Moreover, this model appears to be a sustainable farming approach that defines itself as a working green livelihood for the region.

  • As a new strategy for the optimization of a chiral catalyst, the catalytic activity of the host-guest complexes of chiral bisphosphine bearing imidazolidinone was investigated in Rh-catalyzed asymmetric hydrogenation of enamide. Marginal enhancement in enantioselectivity was observed and the nature of interaction between host-guest was experimentally elucidated.

  • Temperature dependence of the critical micelle concentration (CMC), $x_{CMC}$, in micellization can be described by ln $x_{CMC}$ = A + BT + C lnT + D/T, which has been derived statistical-mechanically. Here A, B, C, and D are fitting parameters. The equation fits the CMC data better than conventionally used polynomial equations of temperature. Moreover, it yields the unique(exponent) value of 2 when the CMC is expressed in a power-law form. This finding is quite significant, because it may point to the universality of the thermal behavior of CMC. Hence, in this article, the nature of the equation ln $x_{CMC}$ = A + BT + C lnT + D/T is examined from a lattice-theory point of view through the Flory-Huggins model. It is found that a linear behavior of heat capacity change of micellization is responsible for the CMC equation of temperature.

  • Two new C2-symmetric chiral $\alpha-$ and w-Diimines incorporating bulky ferrocenylethylamine and their copper(I)complexes have been synthesized and characterized by analytical and various spectroscopic techniques. The catalytic activities of these complexes have been tested in the asymmetric cyclopropanation of a series of olefins with some diazoacetates to achieve varying degree of dia- and enantio-selectivities depending on the nature of the ligand, the substrates, and the reagents. Some mechanistic implication has been made with regard to the interactions among all these chemical species.

  • A superior electrophilic substitution reaction medium that is non-toxic, relatively less corrosive, and non-volatile electrophilic substitution reaction to afford high molecular weight linear and hyperbranched polyetherketones (PEK' s) was developed. The system has very strong driving force to give extra ordinary high molecular weight linear and hyperbranched PEK' s. The reaction medium was further extended to prepare various types of copolymers and covalently grafted polymers onto carbon nanotube (CNT) or carbon nanofiber (CNF). By using characteristic hydrophilic nature of the reaction medium, hyperbranched PEK' s could be synthesized from commercially available $A_3\;+\;B_2$ monomers without network formation via selective solubility of the monomers.

  • Structural morphology, annealing behavior and dielectric properties of polyaniline-emeraldine base (Pani-EB) and poly methyl methacrylate (PMMA) thin films prepared by spin coating technique have been studied. MIM and MISM structures were used to investigate annealing and dielectric behavior. The XRD and AFM spectrum of as grown and annealed thin films indicates the amorphous nature. The observed amorphous phase, low loss, dielectric behavior and thermal stability even at high temperatures implies the feasibility of utilizing PMMA and Pani-EB thin films as gate dielectric insulator layer in organic thin film transistors which can find application in flat panel display.

  • Exceptional progress has been made with chemical vapor deposition (CVD) of graphene in the past few years. Not only has good monolayer growth of graphene been achieved, but large-area synthesis of graphene sheets has been successful too. However, the polycrystalline nature of CVD graphene is hampering further progress as graphene property degrades due to presence of grain boundaries. This review will cover factors that affect nucleation of graphene and how other scientists sought to obtain large graphene domains. In addition, the limitation of the current research trend will be touched upon as well.

  • Intramolecular ${\pi}-{\pi}$ and ${\sigma}-{\pi}$ interactions are omnipresent for numerous energetic and structural phenomena in nature, and the exact description of these nonbonding interactions plays an important role in the accurate prediction of the three-dimensional structures for numerous interesting molecular systems such as protein folding and polymer shaping. We have selected two prototype molecular systems for benchmarking calculations of intramolecular ${\pi}-{\pi}$ and ${\sigma}-{\pi}$ interactions. Accurately describing conformational energy of such systems requires highly elaborate but very expensive ab initio methods such as coupled cluster singles, doubles, and (triples) (CCSD(T)). Our calculations reveal a double hybrid density functional incorporating dispersion correction (B2PLYP-D) that agrees excellently with the CCSD(T) results, indicating that B2PLYP-D can serve as a practical method of choice.

  • In this present article, we analyzed the heat and mass transfer characteristics of the nonlinear unsteady radiative MHD flow of a viscous, incompressible and electrically conducting fluid past an infinite vertical porous plate under the influence of Soret and chemical reaction effects. The effect of physical parameters are accounted for two distinct types of thermal boundary conditions namely prescribed uniform wall temperature thermal boundary condition and prescribed heat flux thermal boundary condition. Based on the flow nature, the dimensionless flow governing equations are resolved to harmonic and non harmonic parts. In particular skin friction coefficient, Nusselt number and Sherwood number are found to evolve into their steady state case in the large time limit. Parametric study of the solutions are conducted and discussed.
