  • A study has been carried out on metal materials in order to identify the quantitative relation between the concentration and damage characteristics after evaluation of the damage characteristics according to the $SO_2$ concentration. The prepared metal samples, which were categorized according to the material (silver, copper, iron, lead, brass) were exposed to 0.01, 0.12, 1, 10, 100, 1,000, and 5,000ppm of $SO_2$ for 24 hours and the optical, physical, chemical deterioration rates both before and after testing were evaluated. The results showed optical deterioration, a loss of gloss on silver specimen with $SO_2$ 100ppm, an increase of color difference on brass, iron, copper and lead specimens with $SO_2$ 5,000ppm, as well as physical changes such as an increase of thickness and corrosion rate on iron sample with $SO_2$ 5,000ppm. In the case of chemical changes such as an increase sulfate ion ($SO{_4}^{2-}$) concentration and decrease of pH on iron and brass specimens were identified. These results suggest that $SO_2$ 100ppm caused clear optical deterioration on some metals such as silver and physicochemical and optical deterioration were identified at $SO_2$ 5,000ppm regardless of metal type. Also, It was concluded that iron and brass are the most susceptible of the metal specimens to $SO_2$.

  • Nondestructive deterioration diagnosis has been carried out for the former ore dressing plant of the Yongwha mine in Yeongyang (Registered Cultural Property No. 255). Deterioration rates about organic contaminant and soil of the upper part (7 to 13 layer) indicate higher than the lower part (1 to 6 layer) of the ore dressing plants. By contrast, deterioration rates such as crack, break out and discoloration of the lower part indicate very higher than the upper part. It is estimated that the plants of the lower part that mechanical and chemical process had been done for flotation were damaged severely by physicochemical weathering with reaction of concrete and chemical solution. As results of ultrasonic velocity measurement, average p-wave velocity of plants were measured 2,462m/s (compressive strength $529kgf/cm^2$). As for the analytical results of surface contaminants and soil compositions using P-XRF, they were identical with major elements (Cu, Zn, Pb, Fe and As) of ore minerals from the Yongwha mine. Therefore, the ore dressing plant should be treated by phytoremediation with conservation because heavy metals could impinged upon plants and natural environment.

  • Calcium carbonate stone deterioration has been intensified in urban area, mainly due to the action of atmospheric pollutant. Samples from the black surface layer were examined under petrographic and scanning electron microscope, coupled with energy dispersive X-ray analyser X-ray fluorescence and X-ray diffraction analysis was also carried out for chemical composition and mineral phase analysis, respectively. Moreover, sulphur isotope ratio was measured, in order to identify the origin of sulphate compounds in the black surface layer. Optical and electronic petrographic analysis indicated that gypsum and Quartz were contained in the black surface layer and led to microcracks. Microstructure and chemical composition analysis showed that the interface between black layer and original stone is not black but its characteristic is similar to black layer The results indicated that during deterioration process the black layer can be expanded gradually into the interface by adsorption of atmospheric pollutants. The sulphur isotope analysis demonstrates that there are different origins of the sulphur component in black surface layer.

  • The Chungung-dong 5-storied pagoda (Treasure No. 12) in the nnm, Korea was studied on the basis of petrological weathering and deterioration diagnosis. Frontal part of the pagoda is looked out on the N30$^{\circ}$W. Constitution rocks of this pagoda show augen gneiss and biotite granite. Host rock of the pagoda was highly exfoliation and discoloration, therefore most rock-forming minerals were altered to the clay minerals due to the mineralogical and chemical weathering. Open cavity and rock surface occur partly green and black patchs because of contamination by algae, lichen and moss, and the lower part of the pagoda is transition to the some weeds. This biological problems are need for cleaning and chemical treatments. For the structural stability, the pagoda is rebuilt without open gap between the each rock materials. All iron plates eliminate from the difference gap of the rock materials, and properly conservation treatments need to be repaired petro-filler for stone cultural properties and water curtain for the humidity attenuation of the ground.

  • The chemical Composition of Chinese red pine (Pinus massoniana) submerged in the Yellow Sea for more than 700 years has been examined. When compared to the recent wood, the marked chemical changes in the waterlogged wood is the higher amount of lignin with lesser amount of holocellulose and abnormally high ash content. In the heavily degraded samples, the degradation of cellulose is more severe than that of hemicellulose. However, hemicellulose is much more attacked than the cellulose at the initial stage of deterioration in the sea water. Chemical analysis suggests that the cellulolytic marine microorganisms, whether they are fungi or bacteria. can be regarded as the primary agents for the destruction of the archaeological woods submerged in the sea water.

  • An integrated in-line oil monitoring detector assigned for continuous in situ monitoring multiple parameters of oil performance for predicting economically optimal oil change intervals and equipment condition control is presented in this study. The detector estimates oil deterioration based on the information about chemical degradation, total contamination, water content of oil and oil temperature. The oil oxidation is estimated by "chromatic ratio", total contamination is measured by the changes in optical intensity of oil in three optical wavebands ("Red", "Green" and "Blue") and water content is evaluated as Relative Saturation of oil by water. The detector is able to monitor oils with low light absorption (hydraulic, transformer, turbine, compressor and etc. oils) as well as oils with rather high light absorption in visible waveband (diesel and etc. oils). In a case study that the detector is applied to a diesel engine oil, it is found that the detector provides good results on oil chemical degradation as well as soot concentration.

  • Stretch wrapping processes that are used to the packaging process had a serious problem of high price and treatment of used wraps. On the other hand, slip-resistant adhesive provides the advantage of simple process, low cost, and free from after-use treatment. In this research, adhesion deterioration of aqueous slip-resistant adhesive adhered to polyethylene film under the moisture condition using aqueous slip-resistant adhesive was observed by the Peel Test. Improvement of adhesive property under the moisturizing condition could be obtained by the selection of appropriate additives. As a result, introduction of maltodextrin reduced the deterioration of slip-resistant adhesion owing to the improved moisture resistance and introduction amount of 10 wt% of maltodextrin showed optimal performance.

  • The occurrence of partial discharge (PD) in solid dielectrics is very harmful because it leads to the deterioration of insulation by electrical, chemical, and thermal reactions as a combined action of the discharged ions bombarding the surface and by the action of chemical compounds that are formed by the discharge. Consequently, if any defects are present in the solid insulation system, performance decreases until the system breaks down. Therefore, removing or suppressing the defect is very important. Voids are a typical defect in the solid insulation system and are very harmful because they deteriorate insulation. As a basic step, studying the properties of PD in voids is important because an accurate knowledge of these properties is required to estimate the deterioration of voids. In this paper, the correlation between the size of voids and internal PD is discussed as a function of the time of the applied voltage and its magnitude. Magnitude, repetition rate, average discharge power, and average discharge current of PD in specimens with large voids were found to be larger than the others in this experiment. The smaller specimens had voids when the magnitude and number of PDs were reduced.

  • The stone Buddhas and Shrine of Unjusa temple (Korea Treasure No. 797) in Hwasun formed in Koryo Dynasty are unique style which the Buddha faces each other the back parts of south and north within the stone Shrine. The stone Buddhas and Shrine are highly evaluated in historical, artistic and academic respects. But, the stone properties have been exposed in the open system various aspects of degradations weathered for a long time without specific protective facilities. The rock materials of the stone Buddhas and Shrine are about 47 blocks, and total press load is about 56.6 metric ton. The host rocks composed mainly of white grey hyaline lithic tuff and rhyolitic tuff breccia. In addition, biotite granite used as part during the restoration works. The chemical index of alteration for host tuffaceous rocks and the replacement granites range from 52.1 to 59.4 and 50.0 to 51.0, respectively. Weathering types for the stone Buddhas and Shrine were largely divided with physical, chemical and biological weathering to make a synthetic deterioration map according to aspects of damage, and estimate share as compared with surface area. Whole deterioration degrees are represented that physical weathering appeared exfoliation. Chemical weathering is black coloration and biological weathering of grey lichen, which show each lighly deterioration degrees. According to deterioration degree by direction of stone Buddhas and Shrine, physical weathering mostly appeared by 39.1% on the sorthern part, and chemical weathering is 61.2% high share on the western part. Biological weathering showed 38.3% the largest distribution on the southern part. Therefore, it is necessary to try hardening for the parts with serious cracks or exfoliations, remove secondary contaminants and organisms through regular cleaning. Also necessary to make a plan to remove moisture of the ground which causes weathering, and estimate that need established and scientific processing through clinical demonstration of conservation plan that chooses suitable treatment.

  • It is well known that the use of PCC as a filler for printing paper making brought about the serious deterioration of strength properties of paper, although PCC could be helpful to reduce the energy consumption. The use of modified PCC with NCC was tried to solve and/or reduce the strength deterioration problem. NCC was prepared from SwBKP by the acid hydrolysis. There was no significant changes in chemical properties and crystalline structure. However the cyrstallinity of NCC was higher than those of SwBKP. The different dosage of NCC was applied to modify the properties of PCC. 0.1% of NCC dosage was enough to improve ash retention and paper properties. The use of modified PCC with NCC as a filler improved ash retention, bulk, opacity and formation without the serious deterioration of strength properties. Thus the use of modified PCC with NCC might be helpful for not only reduction of energy consumption but also increase of filler dosage without the significant sacrifice of strength properties by the optimization of retention system.
