  • The performance evaluation of a micro monopropellant thruster is described in this paper. The platinum which has stable physical and chemical properties is used as a catalyst. The ceramic form, named Isolite is chosen as a catalyst bed. Hydrogen peroxide whose concentration is up to 90wt% is supplied into thruster by direct pressurization with nitrogen gas. The $c^*$ efficient is calculated to evaluate the performance of a thruster. The pressure rise time, pressure decent time and reaction delay are synthetically considered.

  • In recent years, scientific community has found renewed interest in hypersonic flight research. These hypersonic vehicles undergo severe aero-thermal environments during their flight regimes. One of the most important topics of research in hypersonic aerodynamics is to find a reasonable way of calculating either the surface temperature or the heat flux to surface when its temperature is held fixed. This requires modeling of physical and chemical processes. Hyperbolic system of equations with stiff relaxation method are being identified in recent literature as a novel method of predicting long time behavior of systems such as gas at high temperatures. In present work, Energy Relaxation Method (ERM) has been considered to simulate the real gas flow over a 2-D cylinder. Present heat flux results over the cylinder compared well with the experiment. Thus, real gas effects in hypersonic flows can be modeled through energy relaxation method.

  • A numerical parametric study is conducted to simulate shock-induced combustion with a variation in freestream conditions. The analysis is limited to inviscid flow and includes chmical nonequilibrium. A steady combustion front is established if the freestream Mach number is above the Chapman-Jouguet speed of the mixture. On the other, an unsteady reaction fi:ont is established if the freestream Mach number is below or at the Chapman-Jouguet speed of the mixture. The three cases have been simulated for Machs 4.18, 5.11, and 6.46 with a projectile diameter of 15 mm. Machs 4.18 and 5.11 shows an unsteady reaction front, whereas Mach 6.46 represents a steady reaction front. Thus Chapman-Jouguet speed is one of deciding factor for the instabilities to trigger. The instabilities of the chemical front with a variation of projectiles diameters will be investigated.

  • Ignition of a reactive solid with rough surface by constant heat flux is studied. The geometry of surface is represented by a protrusion in shape of cone of infinite length. Ignition time and ignition criterion versus apex angle are determined, with the use of heterogeneous model of ignition. To study the effect of geometry on ignition the results are compared with the known results for the one-dimensional ignition of the semi-infinite body. It is shown, that: a) ignition time depends strongly upon the apex angle and is proportional to the angle to the second power; b) ignition criterion and ignition temperature do not depend strongly on angle. The ignition delay and the energy required for the successful ignition are substantially reduced compared to the one-dimensional case.

  • On 9/5/2003, the planet probe “HAYABUSA” as MUSES-C project was launched by The Institute of Space and Astronautical Science. “HAYABUSA” has microwave discharge ion engines and these engines are characterized by their high efficiency and specific impulse in comparison with chemical engine. A large ion engine can be used as a planet explorer, while a small ion engine can be used as attitude control of small satellite. We have been developing a high thrust density microwave discharge ion engine using “Multi-Monopole Antenna”. The performance of this engine are: ion cost of 344W/A, propellant utilization efficiency of 52% and thrust density of 0.055mN/$\textrm{cm}^2$ for Kr gas flow rate of 2.5sccm, microwave(2.45㎓) power of 32W and acceleration voltage of l.4㎸.

  • Three-dimensional structures of detonation wave propagating in circular tube were investigated. Inviscid fluid dynamics equations coupled with a conservation equation of reaction progress variable were analyzed by a MUSCL-type TVD scheme and four stage Runge-Kutta time integration. Variable-$\gamma$ formulation was used to account for the variable properties between unburned and burned states and the chemical reaction was modeled by using a simplified one-step irreversible kinetics model. The computational code was parallelized based on domain decomposition technique using MPI-II message passing library. The computations were carried out using a home made Windows based PC cluster having 160 AMD AthloxXP and Athlon64 processor. The computational domain consisted of through a roundshaped tube with wall conditions. As an initial condition, analytical ZND solution was distributed over the computational domain with disturbances. The disturbances has circumferential large gradient. The unsteady computational results in three-dimension show the detailed mechanisms of multi-cell mode of detonation wave instabilities resulting diamond shape in smoked-foil record.

  • Development and validation of performance analysis model for dual combustion ramjet engines has been performed. A typical performance model for hypersonic intake flow and supersonic mixing and combustion was demonstrated; Taylor-Maccoll equation for coaxial intakes and a quasi-one dimensional reacting flow analysis with CEA chemical equilibrium for supersonic combustion. The results, thermodynamic data of intake and supersonic combustor were validated with CFD numerical results.

  • A development of hydrazine decomposition catalyst for monopropellant thruster has been performed by Korea Aerospace Research Institute(KARI). The goal of this development is to product a catalyst showing the equivalent performance with space-proven catalysts. Catalyst production and physical/chemical analysis were conducted by Chonnam National University and the analysis result was compared with the result of other catalysts and our own specification. Using the developed prototype catalyst, short firing test was performed in a reactor to verify basic performance of catalyst. After the successful reactor test, hot firing tests were carried out in atmospheric and vacuum condition using 5N thruster to verify durability and safety of catalyst. In this paper, the catalyst development status will be presented.

  • Dual pulse rocket motor has a rocket motor with different pulse grains divided by a pulse separation device such as a fragile bulkhead or a thermal barrier type. It distributes thrust energy very effectively via pulse separation device to improve range and terminal velocity of a missile. This paper contains the thermal barrier design and experimental analysis through ground firing tests of small dual pulse motors. The results will be applied to the design, test and evaluation of the scale up dual pulse rocket motor.
