  • Chemical modification of carbon nanotube (CNT) was carried out using $HNO_3$ and $H_2SO_4$ and characterized by analyzing the CNT before and after the modification using FT-IR and titration. Aggregation behaviors were investigated using a real-time video microscope after the chemically modified CNT(mCNT) had been dispersed in organic solvents such as toluene, dimethylformamide (DMF) and N-methylpyrrolidone (NMP) by ultrasonication. The mCNT showed better dispersion in polar sovents of DMF and NMP than the rCNT. CNT/ poly(methylmethacrylate) (PMMA) films were prepared from solution DMF/PMMA solutions. The films containing mCNT also revealed the improved dispersion.

  • In preparation of silica aerogel-based hybrid coating materials, the combination of hydrophobic aerogel with organic polar binder material is shown to be very limited due to dissimilar surface property between two materials. Accordingly, the surface modification of the aerogel would be required to obtain compatibilized hybrid coating sols with homogeneous dispersion. In this study, the surface of silica aerogel particles was modified by using both surfactant adsorption and heat treatment methods. Four types of surfactants with different molecular weights and HLB values were used to examine the effect of chain length and hydrophilicity. The surface property of the modified aerogel was evaluated in terms of visible observation for aerogel dispersion in water, water contact angle measurement, and FT-IR analysis. In surface modification using surfactants, the effects of surfactant type and content, and mixing time as process parameter on the degree of hydrophilicity for the modified aerogel. In addition, the temperature condition in modification process via heat treatment was revealed to be significant factor to prepare aerogel with highly hydrophilic property.

  • The irradiation of Ultra-Violet (UV) is an efficient treatment for polymer to improve hydrophilic properties. 4-Channel PET knit fabrics were treated with UVA and UVC to develop functional and environment-friendly fabric. The fabric was treated with various treatment times and distances from UV lamps having different wavelength. FT-IR and XPS investigated the chemical changes. To confirm the change of surface properties, contact angle, surface energy and SEM were examined. The study of UV as a treatment for PET knit fabric shows significant changes in chemical and surface properties, which is proved by analyses. FT-IR and XPS analyses prove the augmentation of carboxylic, Hydrophilic groups on the surfaces treated by UV. The increase of water contact angle and surface energy means more water wettable and surface energy of PET film was substantially increased by UV irradiation time. The ageing after surface treatment had little influence on the surface energy of the irradiated PET film. SEM proves the surface modification of PET such as etching, bubble and crack. The negative effects are increased in accordance with increasing treatment time.

  • We investigate the effect of the modification of cellulose acetate propionate as an organic vehicle for silver paste on solar cell efficiency. For the modification of cellulose acetate propionate, poly(ethylene glycol) is introduced to the hydroxyl groups of a cellulose acetate propionate backbone via esterification reaction. The chemical structure and composition of poly(ethylene glycol) functionalized cellulose acetate propionate is characterized by Attenuated total reflectance Fourier transform infrared, $^1H$ nuclear magnetic resonance, differential scanning calorimetry and thermogravimetric analysis. Due to the effect of structural change for poly(ethylene glycol) functionalized cellulose acetate propionate on the viscosity of silver paste, the solar cell efficiency increases from 18.524 % to 18.652 %. In addition, when ethylene carbonate, which has a structure similar to poly(ethylene glycol), is introduced to cellulose acetate propionate via ring opening polymerization, we find that the efficiency of the solar cell increases from 18.524 % to 18.622 %.

  • Essential amino acids involved in the catalytic role of the extracellular cytosine deaminase from Chromobacterium violaceum YK 391 were determined by chemical modification studies. The enzyme activity required the reduced form of Fe (II) ion, since the enzyme was inhibited by ο-phenanthroline. The enzyme activity was completely inhibited by the chemical modifiers, such as p-chloromercuribenzoate (p-CMB), p-hydroxymercuribenzoate, and chloramine-T at 1 mM each. The enzyme activity was also markedly inhibited by pyridoxal-5'-phosphate, diethyl pyrocarbonate, and phenylmethylsulfonyl fluroride at 1 mM each. The inactivation of the enzyme activity with p-CMB was reversed by a high concentration of cytosine. Furthermore, the inactivation of the enzyme activity with p-CMB was also reactivated by 1 mM dithiothreitol, 1 mM 2-mercaptoethanol, 1 mM cysteine-HCI, 10% ethyl alcohol, and 10% methyl alcohol. These results suggested that cysteine and methionine residues might be located in or near the active site of the enzyme, while lysine, histidine, and serine residues might be indirectly involved in the enzyme activity.

  • An atmospheric surface modification using plasma treatment method was applied to butadiene rubber to improve its adhesion strength by plate type reactor. In order to investigate the optimum reaction condition of plasma treatment, type of reaction gas(nitrogen, argon, oxygen, air), gas flow rate(30~100 mL/min), treated time(0~30 s) and primer modification method(GMA, 2-HEMA) were examined in a plate type plasma reactor. The results of the surface modification with respect to the treatment procedure was characterized by using SEM and ATR-FTIR. As the gas flow rate and treated time increases the contact angle decreases. The greatest adhesion strength was achieved at optimum condition such as flow rate of 60 mL/min, treated time 5 s and modification primer containing 2-HEMA for air. Due to the atmospheric surface modification using plate plasma method consequently reduced the wettability of butadiene rubber and resulted in the improvement of the adhesion.

  • In this study, surface modification of CaCO3 nanoparticles by a silane coupling agent propyltrimethoxysilane (PTMS) was conducted and the effect of surface hydrophobicity on the stability of foam and emulsion was studied in order to test the potential applicability as a foam stabilizer or an emulsifier. The surface modification of CaCO3 nanoparticles by PTMS was confirmed by FT-IR, DSC and TGA analysis. The atomic concentration of CaCO3 particle surface treated by PTMS has been also identified by using XRD and XPS analyses. Both floating tests and contact angle measurements were also performed to examine the effect of PTMS concentration on the surface modification of CaCO3 nanoparticles.

  • Asymmetric polyetherimide membrane were prepared by phase inversion method, and the effects of NaOH concentration and reaction time on the morphology change of the polyetherimide membranes were studied. The morphology of skin layers varied from dense structure to sphere structure with increasing concentration of modification solution. The thickness of dense layer increased with increasing reaction time. However, when either the concentration of modifying solution was very high or the reaction time was very long, the dense layers of the asymmetric membrane were disappeared. From these results, it was found that the surface morphology of the asymmetric polyetherimide membranes depended strongly on the modification conditions such as concentration of modification solution and reaction time. These results might be explained by the hydrolysis reaction of polyetherimide into polyamic acid by the NaOH solution.
