Results: Major satisfaction was 4.23 on average, academic self-efficacy was 4.15, and academic continuity was 4.25. Grade and school life satisfaction were the factors correlated with a significant difference in academic persistence. Significant positive correlations were seen between satisfaction with major (r=.637, p<.001) and academic self-efficacy (r=.563, p<.001); higher major satisfaction and academic self-efficacy led to higher academic persistence. Conclusion: A more systematic management approach needs to be conducted by developing active learning participation and applying customized counseling management and support programs by grade to improve the academic self-efficacy and academic persistence of students in health-related fields.

  • Background: Recently, competency-based education has been reorganized in the dental hygiene curriculum. In education, non-cognitive factors are emphasized. Grit, the non-cognitive ability to persevere to achieve an individual's long-term goals, is emerging. This study aims to identify the degree of grit and core competencies in students and to investigate the relationship between them and the factors that affect these core competencies. Methods: This study was conducted using 350 dental hygiene students who were randomly assigned a structured questionnaire to complete. The final analysis included 321 students. The survey contents evaluated grit, core competencies, and general characteristics. The difference in the degree of grit and core competencies in conjunction with the general characteristics of the subjects was analyzed using the t-test/Mann Whitney U-test and the ANOVA/Kruskal-Wallis H test. Multiple regression analysis was then conducted to determine the factors affecting the core competencies of the subjects. Results: The difference of 'grit' according to general characteristics was statistically significant in 'major satisfaction', 'relationship', 'perceived academic achievement', 'grade point average (GPA)'. The difference in 'core competency' according to general characteristics was statistically significant in 'grade', 'department selection', 'major satisfaction', 'relationship', 'perceived academic achievement', 'GPA'. Among the sub-areas of 'grit', 'perseverance of effort' showed a high correlation with 'core competency' and was statistically significant. As a result of regression analysis, 'major satisfaction', 'perceived academic achievement' and 'grit' of dental hygiene students had a statistically significant influence on 'core competency'. Meanwhile, 'GPA' was not seen to be statistically significant in 'core competency'. Conclusion: Grit, a non-cognitive factor, had a statistically significant effect on core competency, while the effects on GPA, a cognitive factor, were not statistically significant. Among the sub-factors of grit, 'perseverance of effort' had a statistically significant effect on 'problem-solving competency' and 'academic competency', which are 'core competency' sub factors.

  • This study analyzed the characteristics of multiple intelligence and the levels of academic adjustment for the department and the major among undergraduate students majoring in IT. Seventy freshmen majoring in IT at the department of M, H University participated in this study and the basic major subject required for the department was Computer Language: I-C Language. Eight intelligence areas less controversial in Gardner's multiple intelligence theory were used; academic adjustment was manipulatively defined as the degree of adjustment for the department and the major among undergraduate students; and pleasure, flow, familiarity and relevance to the major, academic achievement, and major satisfaction were selected as variables through literature review. The undergraduate students majoring in IT showed high levels of interpersonal intelligence and intrapersonal intelligence, with insignificant gender differences. Significant correlations were found between multiple intelligence and academic adjustment. In particular, while pleasure and flow in C programming were found to be at low levels in academic adjustment, the significant correlation between linguistic intelligence in multiple intelligence and flow in C language was a very interesting finding. While significant correlation was not found between multiple intelligence and academic achievement, students who were more highly aware of the relevance to the major and who were more familiar with C language showed higher academic achievement. Lastly, limitations of this study were discussed; on the basis of the results, suggestions were made about prescriptive strategies to improve academic achievement for undergraduate students majoring in IT.

This cross-sectional descriptive study by using secondary data from 2,064 subjects who responded to a self-rated student adjustment test. Descriptive, t-test, ANOVA, Pearson correlation and multiple regression analyses were conducted. Satisfaction with college selection, expectation for college, satisfaction with college service, emotional stability, and relationships with faculty were significantly higher among male students, whereas confidence in major, support from others were significantly higher among the female students. There was a significant positive relationship between academic adjustment and confidence in major, and between social adjustment and expectation for college. Confidence in major, relationships with faculty, emotional stability, expectation for college, satisfaction with college selection, and commitment to college life accounted for 31.8% of the variance in academic adjustment. In addition expectation for college, emotional stability, support from others, gender, commitment to college life, and satisfaction with college services accounted for 44.7% of the variance in social adjustment for university students. Overall, the results of this study suggest that understanding the levels of expectation for college, commitment to college life, and levels of emotional stability may be important for facilitating their transition and adjustment to university life.

Under this circumstance, this study attempted to investigate students' academic achievements and employment preparation behavior based on their demographic characteristics. To accomplish this, a questionnaire survey was conducted involving 234 college men and women in Gwangju and Jeollanam-do from April 12 to 30, 2022. Out of an initial 260 questionnaires distributed, 250 were collected. Of these, 234 copies, excluding 16 poorly answered ones, were used for final analysis. The collected data were analyzed using frequency analysis, exploratory factor analysis, Cronbach's alpha, a t-test, and an F-test, employing SPSS 21.0, which revealed the following: First, concerning academic achievements based on demographic characteristics, a statistically significant difference was found in "motives to select the cosmetology department," "most important aspects for career decision," and "academic major-related license." Second, concerning employment preparation behavior, a statistically significant difference was observed in "academic year," "motives to select the cosmetology department," and "academic major-related license." The above findings confirmed a statistically significant difference in academic achievements and employment preparation behavior, ensuring a better understanding of academic achievements and employment preparation behavior. It is anticipated that those majoring in cosmetology would be more active in job preparation and ultimately obtain the profession they desire with a positive and healthy mindset.

  • Purpose : In order to respond to the needs of society, it is necessary for nursing students to develop into their professional roles and form a higher degree of positive nursing professionalism. This study investigated clinical practice stress, clinical practice satisfaction, academic major satisfaction, and self-esteem among nursing students, and identified factors influencing their nursing professionalism. Methods : The participants of this study were 200 nursing students who used the internet and e-mail, and who understood the purpose and methods of this study. Data were collected from June 21 to July 27, 2021. Data analysis, including the independent t-test, one-way analysis of variance, Pearson correlation coefficients, and multiple regression, was performed using SPSS version 26.0. Results : The mean score was 3.52±.47 for nursing professionalism, 2.99±.56 for clinical practice stress, 3.35±.44 for clinical practice satisfaction, 3.75±.55 for academic major satisfaction, and 3.49±.78 for self-esteem. There were no significant differences in nursing professionalism according to general characteristics. Nursing professionalism was positively correlated with clinical practice satisfaction (r=.36, p<.001), academic major satisfaction (r=.57, p<.001), and self-esteem (r=.41, p<.001), but negatively correlated with clinical practice stress (r=-.41, p<.001). Factors influencing nursing professionalism included academic major satisfaction (𝛽=.39, p<.001) and clinical practice stress (𝛽=-.16, p=.021). These variables explained 36 % of variance in nursing professionalism (F=29.43, p<.001). Conclusion : These findings indicate that academic major satisfaction and clinical practice stress could be considered in effective nursing educational interventions to improve nursing professionalism in nursing students. Therefore, multidimensional efforts are needed to establish educational programs for nursing students aiming to enhance their nursing professionalism. In addition, these findings will be helpful for establishing various emotional control programs for the management of clinical practice stress among nursing students.
