Visualization of Turbulent Flow around a Sphere (구 주위 난류유동에 관한 가시화 연구)

  • The turbulent flow around a sphere was investigated using two experimental techniques: smoke-wire flow visualization in wind tunnel at Re=5300, 11000 and PIV measurements in a circulating water channel. The smoke-wire visualization shows flow separation points near an azimuthal angle of $90^{\circ}$, recirculating flow, transition from laminar to turbulent shear layer, evolving vortex roll-up and fully turbulent eddies in the sphere wake. The mean velocity field measured using a PIV technique in x-y center plane demonstrates the detailed near-wake structure such as nearly symmetric recirculation region, two toroidal vortices, laminar separation, transition and turbulent eddies. The PIV measurements of turbulent wake in y-z planes show that a recirculating vortex pair dominates the near-wake region.

  • In general, the function of intake structure, whether it be a open channel, a fully wetted tunnel, a sump or a tank, is to supply an evenly distributed flow to a pump station. An even distribution of flow, characterized by strong local flow, can result in formation of surface or submerged vortices, and with certain low values of submergence, may introduce air into pump, causing a reduction of capacity and efficiency, an increase in vibration and additional noise. Uneven flow distribution can also increase or decrease the power consumption with a change in total developed head. To avoid these sump problems pump station designers are considered intake structure dimensions, such as approaching upstream, baffle size, sump width, width of pump cell and so on. From this background, flow characteristics of intake within sump are Investigated numerically to obtain the optimal sump design data. The sump model is designed in accordance with HI code.

  • Injection of microbubbles and/or polymer solution has been known to be a promising method for the reduction of frictional drag of water-borne vehicles. Naval Architects have been interested in friction drag reduction technology, since the friction drag of a commercial ship can be over $70{\%}$ of total resistance. The reduction of friction drag is also important for autonomous underwater vehicles and naval submarines to improve their durability and survivability In this study two sets of experiments were carried out for the friction drag reduction of 2-D channel wall and flat plate in the circulating water channels in Chungnam National University. Preliminary results from the experiments are presented and discussed.

  • Migration tests were performed with conservative tracers in a fractured zone that had a single fracture of about 2.5 m distance at the KURT. To interpret the migration of the tracers in the fractured rock, a solute transport model was developed. A two dimensional variable aperture channel model was adopted to describe the fractured path and hydrology, and a particle tracking method was used for solute transport. The simulation tried not only to develop a migration model of solutes for open flow environments but also to produce ideas for a better understanding of solute behaviours in indefinable fracture zones by comparing them to experimental results. The results of our simulations and experiments are described as elution and breakthrough curves, and are quantified by momentum analysis. The main retardation mechanism of nonsorbing tracers, including matrixdiffusion, was investigated.

Unfortunately in order to design the sump station, the reasonable code or the standards weren't presented yet in Korea. Thus, some researchers had often referred the HI code, JSME code or CEN code to design the sump station. This study aims to prescribe the standard of sump design which were matched well the Korean pump station. Thus, the HI code and TSJ code would be interpreted fully to Korean language, the part of interpreted clauses of the western codes would be selected to compose the standard.

  • This paper stated the proposed algorithm to certify the characteristics of artificial explosion sounds traveled through underground bedrock medium. Artificial explosion that travel through underground bedrock had an attenuation within high frequency bands in increase of a distance with multiple transmission paths phenomenon and inhomogeneity of geological status. In this paper, explosion experiment was made in underground tunnel to verify efficiency of proposed algorithm. The could certify the characteristics of artificial explosion sounds as extracted and numerically quantified the characterized parameter with collected sound sample that traveled through underground bedrock channel.

  • This paper describes the development of catamaran type powerboat applicable to leisure and transportation in the sea. Recently, the increasing prosperity of the leisure population has resulted in an increased popularity and need for recreational equipment such as water leisure powerboat. To satisfy the popularity and the need, catamaran type powerboat is developed applicable to leisure and simultaneously, as a means of tranportation for a short distance in the sea through the design using 3-Dimensional modeling method and experiments in circulating wate channel.

  • The effect of channel doping on L-shaped Tunneling Field-Effect Transistors (TFETs) have been investigated by 2D TCAD simulation. When the source doping is over $10^{20}cm^{-3}$, the subthreshold swing (SS) is abruptly decreased, and when drain doping concentration is below $10^{18}cm^{-3}$, the leakage current in the negative voltage is reduced.

  • In this study, flow field measurement of the Pebble Bed Reactor(PBR) for the High Temperature Gas-cooled Reactor(HTGR) was performed. Large number of pebbles in the core of PBR provides complicated flow channel. Due to the complicated geometries, numerical analysis has been intensively made rather than experimental observation. However, the justification of computational simulation by the experimental study is crucial to develop solid analysis of design method. In the present study, a wind tunnel installed with pebbles stacked was constructed and equipped with the Particle Image Velocimetry(PIV). We designed the system scaled up to realize the room temperature condition according to the similarity. The PIV observation gave us stagnation points, low speed region so that the suspected high temperature region can be identified. With the further supplementary experimental works, the present system may produce valuable data to justify the Computational Fluid Dynamics(CFD) simulation method.

  • To realize a high integrated flash memory utilizing SONOS memory devices, the NOR type ITC(one Transistor Cell) SONOS flash arrays are fabricated and characterized. This SONOS flash arrays with the common source lines are designed and fabricated by conventional 0.35$\mu\textrm{m}$ CMOS process. The thickness of ONO for memory cells is tunnel oxide of 34${\AA}$, nitride of 73${\AA}$ and blocking oxide of 34${\AA}$ . To investigate operating characteristics, CHEI(Channel Hot Electron Injection) method and bit line method are selected as the program and 4he erase operation, respectively. The disturbance characteristics ,according to the program/erase/read cycling are also examined. The degradation characteristics are investigated and then the reliability of SONOS flash memory is guaranteed.
