  • Counter-current two-phase flows of air- water in narrow rectangular channels with offset strip fins have been experimentally investigated in a 760 mm long and 100 mm wide test section with 3.0 and 5.0 mm gap widths. The two-phase flow regime, channel-average void fractions and two-phase pressure gradients were studied. Flow regime transition occurred at lower superficial velocities of air than in the channels without fins. In the bubbly and slug flow regimes, elongated bubbles rose along the subchannel formed by fins without lateral movement. The critical void fraction for the bubbly-to-slug transition was about 0.14 for the 3 mm gap channel and 0.2 for the 5 mm gap channel. respectively. Channel-average void fractions in the channels with fins were almost the same as those in the channels without fins. Void fractions increased as the gap width increased, especially at high superficial velocity of air. The presence of fins enhanced the two-phase distribution parameter significantly in the slug flow, where the effect of gap width was almost negligible. Superficial velocity of air dominated the two-phase pressure gradients. Liquid superficial velocity and channel gap width has only a minor effect on the pressure gradients.

  • The object of this paper is to study on the thermal performance of a micro channel water block for computer CPU cooling. The effects of liquid flow rate, micro channel width and height on the thermal performances of water block are investigated experimentally. The water block was fabricated Al and machined with a micro milling. The water block consisted of rectangular micro channels 0.5 to 0.9 mm width and 1.5 to 4.5 mm height. The experiments were conducted using deionized water, over a liquid flow rate ranging from 0.2 to 2.0 kg/min. The base temperature and thermal resistance decrease with increasing of liquid flow rate. The increase of a channel height is more effective on the thermal resistance than the decrease of a channel width. At the flow rate of 0.7 kg/min, input power of 100 W, the base temperature and thermal resistance of sample 6 is $33^{\circ}C$ and $0.13\;^{\circ}C/W$ respectively.

  • The TFTs have been fabricated with 3 different geometry SID electrodes which have the same channel W/L ratio (W/L = 5) due to constant channel resistance, The 3 samples have different channel widths (350, 150, and $25\;{\mu}m$) and channel lengths (70, 30, and $5\;{\mu}m$) by fixed channel W/L ratio simultaneously on one chip for reliable comparisons. Resultant on-current and field effect mobility are proportional to the channel width, while the subthreshold swing is inversely proportional to the channel width mainly due to the change of contact resistance. These results show that the contact resistance strongly affects the device performances and should be considered in the applications.

  • Glass forming technology is used to form channels of external electrode flat fluorescent lamps (FFL). The efficiency of FFL depends on the number and the length of the channels. Five FFLs with same size ($300\;mm{\times}80\;mm$), different channel number, and different channel length were fabricated. The electrical and optical characteristics of 5 FFLs were evaluated. It was found that the FFL with one channel with its channel length of 1,110 mm and channel width of 7 mm corner width was shown to have the highest efficiency at room temperature operation.

  • The flow in a parallel walled test channel, when obstructed with a geometry at the entrance, can be forward, reverse and stagnant depending on the position of the obstruction. This interesting flow phenomenon has potential benefit in the control of energy and various flows in the process industry In this experiment, the flat plate obstruction geometry was used as an obstruction at the entry of the test channel. The parameters that influence the flow inside and around the test channel were the gap (g) between the test channel and the obstruction geometry, the length (L) of the test channel and the Reynolds number (Re). The effect of the gap to channel width ratio (g/w) on the magnitude of the velocity ratio (V$\_$i/ / V$\_$o/ : velocity inside/ velocity outside the test channel) was investigated for a range of Reynolds numbers. The maximum reverse flow observed was nearly 20% to 60% of the outside velocity for Reynolds number ranging from 1000 to 9000 at g/w ratio of 1.5. The maximum forward velocity inside the test channel was found 80% of the outside velocity at higher g/w ratio of 8. The effect of the test channel length on the velocity ratio was investigated for different g/w ratios and a fixed Reynolds number of 4000. The influence of the Reynolds number on the velocity ratio is also discussed and presented for different gap to width ratio (g/w). The flow visualisation photographs showing fluid motion inside and around the test channel are also presented and discussed.

  • The variation of channel bed which shows the complex hydraulic characteristics at channel junction was investigated by variation of discharge ratio and location of pier. As discharge ratio increase, the depth and width of erosion region become bigger to point of 63% of channel width in case of 1:0.5 discharge ratio. It was observed that the maximum scour depth at the point of 0.5 times of the channel width in the channel junction as 2.5 times bigger than straight channel. It means that the maximum scour depth at the channel junction is 2 times greater than by experimental formulas which are widely used in practical engineering, location of pier should be determined when it is installed in channel junction.

  • The purpose of this study is to analyze the sensitivity of the RMA2 model parameters reflecting the flow characteristics of stream junction and thus understand the hydraulic characteristics of the channel confluence flow. This study dealt with the input parameters of the RMA-2 model, a two-dimensional numerical analysis model widely used for researches both at home and abroad. The parameters of the RMA-2 model are roughness coefficient, turbulent diffusion coefficient, Coriolis forces latitude, Density, and mesh size. This study those parameters estimated from actual heavy rainfall, and varied the parameter size by (-)30%${\sim}$+30% to review the characteristics of the flow characteristics of the channel section. Weobserved that when the ratio of the channel width was relatively small, the smaller the approaching angle was, the farther from the junctions became the generating place of the maximum flow velocity, however, when the ratio of the channel width was relatively large, the larger the approaching angle was, the farther the generating place of the maximum flow velocity from the junctions became. In particular, the distance between junctions and the place where the maximum flow velocity generated showed an absolute correlationover 90% of the relative channel width, but an inverse relationwas found when the distance to the place where the flow velocity generated was shortened as relative the channel width between the main channel and tributary increased.

  • Ships strengthened for navigation in ice encounter level ice, ice ridge and broken ice fields. Thus, the ship resistance in ice is a very critical concern to the designers of ice-going vessels. The objective of this study is to understand the physical aspects of ship performance in ice and to investigate the characteristics of the ship resistance in broken ice channels. In particular, this study identifies the ship resistance in ice associated with the broken ice channel width and the size of broken ice pieces. Model testings of towed-resistance condition in broken ice channels with three ship speeds were conducted in KRISO ice model basin. The influence of the ship resistance characteristics in broken ice channels for channel width and size of broken ice pieces was analyzed.

  • To design ship channel is one of important factors for planning and developing a port. Bends in channel should be avoided if possible, but the channel should be widened, if channel bend is unavoided, to account widened path of a ship in bend for the safe passage of a ship. In this study, Variable Bumper Area(VBA) model is applied to determine ship channel width in bend and channel-bend geometry. The result of this study shows that the width of a channel in bend may be designed as wide as the width in straight lane provided the angle of deflection is less than 30 degree, should be widened for 60degree deflection based on the length of the largest ship using the channel and the angle of deflection.
